Athletics in debt

http://www.dchieftain.com/news/athl...ign=blox&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social

Socorro Consolidated Schools officials are looking for ways to trim a $90,000 deficit in their general athletic fund.....

Any other school districts experiencing this?

Pay for play an option?

When I was coaching our players had to pay to play. Also no meals provide. Students would have to pay for their own meals as our school wouldn’t. Do others do this? Or should they?

Playoff Picture - 5A

April 3rd - 5A Playoff Picture

Predicted District Champs
1-5A: Farmington (9-5)
2-5A: Albuquerque Academy (8-7)
3-5A: Santa Teresa (11-2)
4-5A: Goddard (10-2)
5-5A: Belen (15-4)

Battles: Farmington will battle with Miyamura for the title, however the Scorpions seem to be warming up at the right time. Albuquerque Academy started slow out of the gate but have won the last four games including starting district play (3-0). Santa Teresa could be the 1-seed overall when it's said and done - need to run district play that includes a potential battle with Alamogordo or Deming. Goddard might have the toughest fight with Artesia ranked No. 3 in the state. Belen and St. Pius could also be teams that have a shot at playing for the state title, they'll fight for 5-5A.

Teams Going for The Top-4

Goddard and Santa Teresa are basically at the top but a recent Goddard loss to Farmington could put ST at the top. Goddard, now Farmington, Belen, Artesia and St. Pius could also be teams in the fight for 4.

If we had to predict (1-4): Santa Teresa, Goddard, Belen and Farmington.

Who else gets a home game (5-8): Artesia, St. Pius X, Albuquerque Academy and Miyamura.

Above the Bubble (9-12): Deming, Valencia, Alamogordo, Roswell.

Bubble Fringe (13-14): Grants, Los Alamos

Last Two Bubble IN (15-16): Bloomfield, Aztec

On the Outside; Kirtland Central, Los Lunas, Roswell

Hitting Thesis Proposal

Coaches,

I'm starting to collect data for my thesis proposal & could use end of season stats from anyone who wants to send it to me. What I need from you is what percentage of flyballs and groundballs resulted in your hitter reaching base. Im just looking for did the ball in play result in reaching base, the outcome of the play is irrelevant in regards to error, fielders choice, etc. I appreciate anyone who is willing to help me out.

For Example:

Lovington (Through 9 Games)

39% of balls hit in the air resulted in the hitter reaching base.
29% of balls on the ground resulted in the hitter reaching base. (Including bunts)

Granted its not a full season, but I can also report the following changes since we changed out hitting philosophy from undercutting to uppercutting this past summer.

2016: Team Totals
Avg- .172 2B- 10 3B- 3 SLG- .200 Hits per game- 3.7

2017:Team Totals
Avg- .182 2B- 15 3B- 3 SLG- .226 Hits per game- 4.3

2018:Team Totals (9 games) First year of uppercut swings
Avg- .248 2B- 10 3B- 4 SLG- .332 Hits per game- 5.8

Star Athletes & the Star Treatment

So the whole Kevin Durant ejection was a semi-big deal last week. Almost all the pundits and talking heads rushed to his defense and repeated the same babble about how star players should get different treatment, how the ref was too soft, nobody pays to see the ref, everyone pays lots of money to see the star players, blah blah blah. KD himself even said that he had no regrets about his actions.

Yet, not one, at least that I saw, not one of those pundits/talking heads ever asked the simple question "Well, what did KD say?" There was no objective look what happened. Luckily for us, all these televised events are mic'ed up beyond belief and now we know exactly what KD said to that ref:

Now with this out and obvious, there will not be a single person to backpedal and say..."Yeah, he deserved it."

And we wonder why our kids think they can get away with it, the parents want to get away with it and some of us coaches want to get away with it.
