MLS Teams Advance in CCL

Well, 2/3 of the MLS teams advanced in their series vs Liga MX teams in the CONCACAF Champions league. Looking at the spread overall, the results balanced out.

Toronto did what they had to do on the road and held on to advance on away goals vs Tigres. THAT was a great series. Both teams played great. Tigres attacked non-stop. Toronto had a defensive plan and stayed with it. Things got a little "iffy" for Toronto at the end of the 2nd leg but props to them.

NY Red Bulls romped over Xolos de Tijuana. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Tyler Adams were very good over both legs.

Seattle, oh poor Seattle. They got beat up both on the scoreboard and physically vs Chivas. Once the first Chivas player put a player in green on his arse, they looked shook. They were 2nd to every ball, they got pushed around, whatever game plan they had went out the door early. Chivas were out to prove a point about themselves and maybe a smaller one for LigaMX.

The semis are set up as follows:

Toronto v America
NYRB v Chivas.

Chaparral

Per MaxPreps, Chaparral is 5-4. I'm not sure people realize how remarkable that is.

The following stats are all from MaxPreps: Chapa won only four games COMBINED over the last four seasons. Since Chaparral started playing baseball in 2008, they have won more than three games in a season only once, in 2012 when they went 5-22. They have never won a district game (0-108 in all district games). Their last win over a New Mexico team was in 2013 (their first game against a NM team this year is in early April vs. Silver). They had a 54-game losing streak from 2013-15.

Chaparral is probably the single toughest place to win in New Mexico. I'm definitely rooting for them.

Championship Week

Last week was a great week for women's sports in Hobbs. The Lady Eagles won the second basketball championship in school history and the NMJC indoor track and field team won their second national championship in a row. Last year they won both indoor and outdoor national championships.

Also, the NMJC women's basketball team is ranked in the top 5 nationally heading into next week's national championship, which is being held at Lubbock Christian University this year. They've had some injury issues this season but still have a shot to make a good run at a national championship this year.

And the NMJC baseball team is currently ranked 3rd nationally in the latest polls. Let's hope these teams can bring more national championships to the great state of New Mexico.
