Girls basketball in New Mexico continues to captivate audiences, showcasing remarkable talent throughout the 2023/2024 season. As the postseason approaches, NMPreps shines a spotlight on the standout players who have illuminated the courts with their skills and determination.

10 Players to Watch

Leading the charge is none other than the sensational Bella Hines from Eldorado High School in Albuquerque. The 2025 prospect boasts an impressive average of 33.9 points per game, earning her the title of perhaps the best player of all time. With a silky smooth jumper and an unmatched tenacity, Hines dominates the game like no other in the state.

Joining the ranks of top-tier talent is Bhret Clay from Hobbs, a formidable force set to leave her mark and a sure college basketball prospect. Clay's leadership propels the Hobbs Eagles, the reigning state champions, towards another title. Also, in the spotlight are Taejhuan Hill (Volcano Vista), Sydney Benally (Sandia), and Eva Love (La Cueva), forming the coveted "Fab Five" of New Mexico basketball prospects this season. Benally and Love dazzle with their scoring prowess, while Hill dominates the paint as the top forward in the state. Benally is averaging 19.7 points per game with Love at 17.8 points per game.

In the Class 4A, Jadyn Montoya of Valencia High School continues to shine, averaging an impressive 20.3 points per game as she leads her team on a late-season surge. Meanwhile, Caitlin Turnbow of Organ Mountain High School emerges as a standout performer down south, averaging 17.6 points per game, fueling her team's quest for an Elite Eight appearance.

Kapiolani Anitielu of Farmington proves to be a force on the court, showcasing her spot-up shooting skills with an average of 16.5 points per game. Teaming up with Benally at Sandia, Hope Giddings adds to the formidable duo, contributing 13.5 points per game and bolstering their team's title contention.

In 1A basketball, Harper Dunn has already attracted the attention of several Division I programs. The 6-foot-6 freshman is averaging an impressive 20.3 points and 18.1 rebounds per game this season, along with 8.5 blocks per contest. The Cardinals boast a solid record of 16-3 overall and remain undefeated at 7-0 in district play.

Last but not least, Jordyn Dyer, a rising star from La Cueva Bears and number one ranked player in the 2026 class, demonstrates her potential as one of the state's top talents. With an average of 15.2 points per game, Dyer is poised to ascend to the ranks of the state's elite players.

We began our analysis of 2A basketball today by focusing on four of the six criteria points. This aligns closely with the Freeman rating, which also appears to influence the coaches' poll. Of particular interest is our second-ranked team, the Texico Wolverines, who are currently seeded at 6th. This positioning could present a formidable challenge for the 3rd-seeded Eunice, especially considering the tough first-round opponent they would face in 14th-ranked Mora. Another compelling matchup to watch is between Mesa Vista and Escalante, both of whom are considered potential 1st-place finishers, although only one will secure the automatic bid through the playoff game. Class 2A could bring us the most exciting matchups of any classification in the opening round.

State Tournament Suggestion

Would you support the idea of assigning quadrant hosts for each class instead of having the top 8 seeds host the first round games?

For instance, the #1 seed could host both the #1 vs #16 and #8 vs #9 games in a doubleheader at their home court, or possibly at a neutral site nearby.

Taking the latest 4A bracket as an example, #1 Highland could face #16 Valencia and #8 Grants could play #9 Portales in a doubleheader at a neutral site like Volcano Vista, which is centrally located but still favors the 1-seed in terms of travel.

Similarly, #2 Valley could host #15 Belen and #7 Lovington could face #10 Shiprock at a location like Cleveland, which again reduces travel for the lower seeds while still favoring the 2-seed. This arrangement not only benefits the top seeds but also increases attendance, thereby generating more revenue.

For the next quadrant, #3 Hope could host #14 Bernalillo and #6 Artesia could play #11 Silver at a suitable venue like Belen or Los Lunas, striking a balance in terms of gym size and travel distance.

Finally, for the last quadrant, #4 Academy could face #13 Del Norte and #5 St. Pius X could play #12 Espanola Valley, possibly at a location like Bernalillo.

Then all winners head to the PIT. It would give more of a state tournament game feel in my opinion.

Grine's Scoop: It's shaping up to be an exhilarating final week of the season, with plenty of potential for movement in the rankings. Here we are with our updated analysis, as we make our second attempt at determining the 4A bracket.

An intriguing observation is the situation with Pojoaque Valley, which could still potentially secure the 14th seed. They hold the head-to-head advantage over Gallup but not over Shiprock. However, Gallup's recent victory over Shiprock has thrown both teams into contention for a spot in the tournament. With Shiprock and Gallup now tied in the District 1-4A standings, it's anyone's guess who will ultimately secure a spot in March Madness. We gave Gallup the edge as the H2H and auto (predicting outcomes this coming week).

Keep those questions coming as we continue to delve deeper into the teams and their prospects for the postseason.

Class 1A New Mexico High School Boys Basketball Rankings - February 14th

Today, we present the latest edition of our NMPreps 1A power rankings for Week 12 of the New Mexico high school basketball season. The rankings see minimal movement this week, except for Melrose and Logan swapping positions once again at 4 and 5, following their closely contested season series which saw Melrose emerge victorious in overtime this time.

  1. Magdalena Steers (21-1, 6-0): The Steers dominated Quemado with a convincing 62-29 victory in their recent matchup. (Last Week: #1)
  2. Des Moines Demons (19-3, 6-0): Des Moines maintained their winning streak with impressive victories over Cimarron (68-63) and Springer (77-47). (Last Week: #2)
  3. Fort Sumner/House Foxes (18-4, 4-0): The Foxes secured a crucial win against Melrose, triumphing 55-49 in their sole game since the last ranking. (Last Week: #3)
  4. Melrose Buffaloes (19-3, 2-2): Melrose bounced back from an earlier loss to Logan by defeating them 79-74 in overtime, but suffered a setback against Fort Sumner in their latest matchup. (Last Week: #5)

Grine's Scoop: This season's Road to The PIT has been a rollercoaster ride, with vibrant bubble talk and numerous shifts and movements. Today, we provide a brief outlook on the criteria points and seeds before our comprehensive breakdown in Week 13. Here are some key updates: Rio Rancho and Las Cruces have secured their spots as IN,while Roswell and Alamogordo have fallen OUT. Roswell's loss to Hobbs, they are now in the "In the Hunt" section, trailing behind Alamogordo and Capital in the freeman rating.

In terms of significant movemnent, Clovis bounced back from a tough loss to Hobbs to reclaim their spot as the auto from 4-5A and secure the 6-seed, marking a major 10-seed shift. Additionally, Santa Fe's victory over Los Lunas propelled them from 10th to a home-game at No. 8. La Cueva's tie with West Mesa in 2-5A gives them the edge as the Auto this week, boosting them from 8th to 5th, while West Mesa slides down from 5th to 9th with a high freeman rating.
