Friday District Championships: Must-Watch Girls Basketball Games

As the excitement of high school basketball reaches its peak, Friday brings forth thrilling matchups in various district championships across New Mexico. Here are five must-watch games:

Organ Mountain Knights (19-7) vs. Mayfield Trojans (22-4)
In a showdown of Lsa Cruces schools, the Organ Mountain Knights clash with the Mayfield Trojans for the third time this season. Having split their season series, with Mayfield narrowly edging out a 37-36 victory just a week ago, this game promises intense competition. Keep an eye on star players Jazlene Ruiz of Mayfield and Caitlin Turnbow of Organ Mountain as they lead their teams into battle. (Classification: 5A) Prediction: Mayfield wins 41-38.

Eldorado Golden Eagles (20-7) vs. Farmington Scorpions (23-3)
The Eldorado Golden Eagles collide with the Farmington Scorpions in the District 2-5A championship game. Fresh off a crucial win against their rival La Cueva, the Golden Eagles aim to carry their momentum forward. With both teams having split their season series, the matchup presents a showcase of talent. All eyes will be on standout players Bella Hines of Eldorado and Kapiolani Anitielu of Farmington as they vie for victory. Hines leads the state in scoring with an impressive 34 points per game, while Anitielu averages 17.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. (Classification: 5A) Prediction: Eldorado upsets in win, 62-61.

Lovington Wildcats (17-11) vs. Artesia Bulldogs (19-6)
At 5:30 PM, the Lovington Wildcats square off against the Artesia Bulldogs for the District 4-4A tournament championship. As the top seed in the tournament, the Artesia Bulldogs are determined to defend their home court at the Bulldog Pit. (Classification: 4A) Prediction: Artesia wins, 40-36.

Valencia Jaguars (18-10) vs. St. Pius X Sartans (22-3)
Traveling to Albuquerque, the Valencia Jaguars face the St. Pius X Sartans for the District 5-4A tournament championship. Although St. Pius X claimed both games of the season series by 9-point margins, the Jaguars are riding the wave of momentum from their recent performances. Key players, both next level talent, to watch include Jadyn Montoya for Valencia and Alyssa Maes for St. Pius X. (Classification: 4A) Prediction: St. Pius X wins, 45-40.

Gallup Bengals (21-7) vs. Kirtland Central Broncos (24-3)
In what promises to be a thrilling encounter, the Gallup Bengals collide with the Kirtland Central Broncos for the fourth time this season. With Kirtland Central holding a 2-1 advantage in the regular season series, including two convincing victories (78-45 and 60-44) . Although Gallup managed to secure a narrow 57-56 win at home, Kirtland Central enters the game as a formidable opponent. (Classification: 4A) Prediction: Kirtland Central wins 70-60.

RESUME WATCH

Note:
Although Gallup won the automatic bid, Shiprock still owns the criteria over Gallup and because they are technically (1) for the district placement, the NMAA can use the criteria to determine seed. This would still have Shiprock around the 12-seed.

Feature Grine's 'Mohs Hardness Scale' of Favorites to win the State Championship - Class 5A

Grine's 'Mohs Hardness Scale' of favorites to win the state championship.

As we dive into Week 14, also known as District Tournament Week, and with one-game playoffs set for Monday evening, we present Grine's 'Mohs Hardness Scale' of favorites to win the state championship. This feature offers a unique take on the traditional 'contenders/pretenders' analysis. While others will regurgitate grades or tiers, we've opted for our annual mineral hardness scale, measuring relative resistance to scratching. In this context, it represents our favorites to win the title, comparing them against all teams in each class, and how we rank the most likely to win the state championship. #nmpreps

Talc (Scale Number 1)

Hardness: Talc, rated as the softest mineral on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is commonly used in various industrial applications.

Teams: (15) Roswell, (16) Las Cruces, (17) Rio Rancho, (18) Capital - Two of these teams will secure a spot in the tournament, while the other two will be left out. However, this season isn't likely to see a 15 or 16 seed upset a 1 or 2 seed. It's probable that one of these teams will occupy the 15th or 16th slot.

Gypsum (Scale Number 2)

Hardness: Gypsum, with a rating of 2 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is a soft mineral commonly used in construction materials.

Teams: (13) Albuquerque, (14) Farmington - These teams have had solid seasons, akin to those in Calcite, but their journey is likely to end in the first round.

Calcite (Scale Number 3)

Hardness: Calcite, rated 3 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is a mineral known for its variety of colors and crystal forms.

Teams: (11) Alamogordo, (12) Clovis - Both teams have exceeded preseason expectations, but they're unlikely to advance past the first round at state.

Fluorite (Scale Number 4)

Hardness: Fluorite, with a rating of 4 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is a colorful mineral known for its fluorescent glow under ultraviolet light.

Teams: (10) Sandia - The young Matadors have shown promise, but they're likely a year away from reaching the PIT and Elite Eight. However, an upset wouldn't be out of the question, explaining their placement in this group.

Apatite (Scale Number 5)

Hardness: Apatite, rated 5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is a phosphate mineral known for its moderate hardness and wide variety of colors.

Teams: (8) Eldorado, (9) Santa Fe - Both teams have shown strong performances, but it's unlikely that both will advance to the Elite Eight. Expect one to lose in the opening round.

Orthoclase (Scale Number 6)

Hardness: Orthoclase, rated 6 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is a common mineral known for its moderate durability.

Teams: (7) Los Lunas - While boasting the top-ranked player in Jalin Holland, they may struggle to advance beyond the Elite Eight.

Quartz (Scale Number 7)

Hardness: Quartz, with a rating of 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, is known for its toughness and durability.

Teams: (6) West Mesa - The talent is undoubtedly present, but West Mesa didn't finish February on a high note, and their historical performance doesn't favor them. Can the Mustangs make it to the Final Four? It's been quite a while since they last did - perhaps not since the 90s.

Topaz (Scale Number 8)

Hardness: Topaz is a durable gemstone known for its brilliance and clarity

Teams: (4) Organ Mountain, (5) La Cueva - While La Cueva possesses the talent to contend with Atrisco and Cleveland, I lean towards Organ Mountain due to their March performance and Coach Rocky Gonzales' ability to instill determination in the Knights despite their talent gap with La Cueva or our #1-#3 teams, Brandon Kehres adds strength to their lineup as a top five player in New Mexico.

Corundum (Scale Number 9)

Hardness: Corundum is renowned for its durability and is second only to diamond on the Mohs Hardness Scale.

Teams: (2) Atrisco Heritage, (3) Cleveland - While some may argue for Organ Mountain's inclusion here, the talent depth disparity between these two teams is notable. If they end up on opposite sides of Volcano Vista, one of them could face off against the Hawks in the title game.

Diamond (Scale Number 10)

Hardness: This mineral is known for its exceptional resistance to scratching.

Teams: (1) Volcano Vista - The Hawks are undoubtedly the cream of the crop in New Mexico. Barring a catastrophic collapse, they are poised to secure their third consecutive title. With an abundance of talent and Greg Brown's coaching prowess, they are on track to etch their names in history alongside the best of the best

Who’s your pick to take it all this year, and why?

While I’m tempted to favor Hobbs, something tells me that the district they’re playing in, (District 4), might pose challenges when they reach the Final 4. On the other hand, (District 2), home to Eldorado, La Cueva, Farmington, and Sandia, seems like a tough battleground where teams are honing their skills for the State Tournament.

But let’s not overlook Volcano Vista, with impressive wins against Farmington, Sandia (splitting 1-1), La Cueva (twice), and Eldorado.

Scoop: We made our best prediction for District 2-5A, with La Cueva and West Mesa currently tied. Both teams are expected to win on Friday: La Cueva against Eldorado and West Mesa against Sandia. These outcomes could impact the standings, but for now, we've projected the benefit to the expected winners. This could potentially give both teams a chance to enter the bracket as a #1 in the District Finish criteria point. However, we've given La Cueva the automatic spot as the projected winner of the potential one-game playoff. It's worth noting that only La Cueva would be the DC Win for teams outside the district seeking to earn that point (DC WINS). Another interesting point is Alamogordo moving up in the seed due to holding a 3-2 win over Eldorado, despite lacking a head-to-head advantage. Keep an eye out for potential DC wins to influence the final standings as the week comes to a close.

For this feature, we did not factor in head-to-head matchups and only assigned DC Wins of the criteria to potential district champions. However, this could change by the final day on Sunday or Monday.

4A BASKETBALL (FEBRUARY 23RD)

#1 Highland vs #16 Pojoaque Valley
#2 Valley vs #15 Los Alamos
#3 Hope Christian vs #14 Espanola Valley
#4 Albuquerque Academy vs #13 Gallup
#5 Artesia vs #12 Shiprock
#6 St. Pius X vs #11 Taos
#7 Lovington vs #10 Portales
#8 Grants vs #9 Silver

Scoop: The reliability of the coaches' poll is once again under scrutiny, particularly in District 4-4A, where the voting pattern seems questionable. Despite St. Pius X defeating Artesia, the coaches placed Artesia higher, possibly to gain a criteria point advantage. This would give Artesia the 4-2 win in criteria. If the coaches poll favors SPX on the final ballot, then SPX should win. This decision could lead to a tiebreaker scenario favoring St. Pius X as the head-to-head winner. Additionally, it's noteworthy that Chaparral, with a 9-17 record, earned votes in the poll, 5 votes to be clear. While these ballots may be subject to scrutiny by the NMAA, we've remained faithful to the NMPreps Road to the PIT Bracketology feature by utilizing available information.

State Tournament Seeding and Selection Information

Seeding and Selection- Basketball

The NMAA staff will seed & select teams for the 2023-2024 State Championships utilizing the following criteria in NMAA Bylaw 7.11 as voted on by the Board of Directors:

•
Finish in regular season district play
•
Head to Head
•
Wins against district champions regardless of class
•
Overall Record
•
MaxPreps Rankings
•
Member School Input (see following form) - To be submitted by head coach prior to 8:00 AM on the day of seeding. Note: Football “School Input Form" will be submitted prior to 4PM on the day of seeding.

NOTE: In the event of a tie among criteria points, head to head will be used to break the tie. If there is no head to head competition, or the head to head competition is tied, then MaxPreps Strength of Schedule will be used to break the tie.

Selection Date: Basketball- March 3, 2024 (8AM)

The District Chairperson is asked to submit a 'District Placement Form' (see attached form) prior to 8:00 AM on the day of seeding. Note: Football 'District Placement Forms' will be submitted following the final game in that district but no later than 4PM.

State Tournament Pairings:
The regular season District Champion and the DistrictTournament Champion (could be one or two per district) advance to the NMAA StateTournament. The remainder of the field will be made up of at-large berths. Selection and seeding will take place to determine the 16-team bracket for Classes A-5A. (See 7.11). Higher seeds will host first round games.

Note: One district team cannot be seeded or selected higher than another if they came out of district as a lower seed, with regular season taking precedence over tournament play. In the event of a tie in the regular season district standings, the NMAA Staff may use the six criteria points listed in 7.11.2 or any other head to head competition to determine the selection/seeding order between the two teams that are tied.

Related Information:

-Overall Record -- They look at the "Overall" Win % of each team.
  1. Seeding and Selection will take place on Sunday, March 3rd. Brackets will be released at approximately 5:00 PM on the Selection Show that you can access on the NMAA website and the 24/7 app.
  1. Teams that finish first in the regular season are the “District Champions” for Seeding and Selection and an automatic qualifier for the State Tournament.
  1. If there was a playoff game for first place, the winner of the playoff game will be the only team that is considered “District Champion” for Seeding and Selection and the only automatic qualifier. It is up to the district if they want to name teams “co-champion,” but that does not change our seeding and selection criteria.
  1. If more than one team is tied for first in the regular season, only the “District Champion” will gain an automatic berth. The other teams tied for first place are NOT guaranteed a berth in the state tournament. Only one team is a regular season automatic qualifier.
  1. For the criteria point “Wins Against District Champions,” wins against the lone “District Champion” will be the only wins that are counted. For example, if two teams are tied for first, the winner of the playoff game is the only team that you can count wins against for the criteria point “Wins Against District Champions.”

  1. The winner of the District Tournament will also gain an automatic berth to the State Tournament.

  1. The Coaches Input form is due into the office by 8:00 AM on Sunday, March 3rd. Any forms after this date and time will not be used. Your input is very important. Even though your team may not make the tournament, your voice still needs to be heard. We strive to have a Coaches Input form from all head coaches. Any forms that are obviously “gamesmanship” by an individual coach or a group of coaches will not be counted. Coaches input is one of six criteria point.
