Leadership Week 6

Here's week 6!! Love this time of year, playoff baseball & soon to be on-sale Halloween Candy.

Chapter 6: The Model of a Mentor Leader- “Living the Message”

1. What type of legacy are you building?

I think a lot of times people don’t start to think about the lasting impact of their legacy until much later in their life. I’ve always wondered what my students & athletes take from me when they go home. After losing a student to suicide this summer I’ve questioned if I’ve done enough for those I lead. You should be cognizant of the fact that you’re always in the process of leaving a legacy. Whether it’s positive or negative is up to you.

This past week I had the chance to listen to Matt Deggs the Head Baseball Coach at Sam Houston State speak. It was one of my favorite lines from his speech, “I’m no longer a transactional coach, I’m a transformational coach.” Winning is a goal, but it’s not the primary objective. Equipping those we lead with the tools they need to be successful in life and in return use those skills to lead and teach others should be our main objective. Baseball is just the vehicle I can use to teach these things. What we teach can be used for lifetimes to come. Championship trophies are a great thing, but they will always be temporary. Take the time to think, how far will your legacy reach?

Important Takeaways

-Your character is what will define you

-What you do in the dark when no one is watching is who you really are

Quotes

“When you’re a teacher, you talk when you teach. You don’t talk during the test.”

“When you’re in a crisis, it’s too late to try to get people to follow you. Unless you have demonstrated faith and confidence in non-crisis times.”

“Your character is who you are, your reputation is who people think you are.”

"If your team sucks, it's because you suck as the manager."- Tony LaRussa

Leadership Week 7

Have a great week!! Feel free to post below & share your thoughts

Chapter 7: The Means of a Mentor Leader- “Maximizing Team Performance”

1. How often do you get out of your comfort zone to go serve others?

I saw this a lot while I was coaching and teaching in Pojoaque. My students and players would always invite me to Pueblo Feast Days. In the beginning I was very hesitant to go because I was unfamiliar with it all. When I finally went and watched the San Ildefonso Pueblo dances and feast I was amazed. My players, students, and their families were so happy I came to participate and it ended up being a great experience. But I almost let the cultural boundary I had created ruin a chance to show my players how invested I was in them. I met with the Governor of the Pojoaque Pueblo a few times as well to discuss baseball and get a sense of what the community was all about. I really enjoyed my time in Pojoaque and was sad that we couldn’t afford to live in the area at the time, so I had to step down. Don’t let boundaries you created be the reason why you don’t lead others. To borrow a line for Coach Gonzales “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable”.

2. How do you get others to buy-in and invest everything into your vision?

For new coaches, teachers, or anyone without a proven track record it can be hard to create this buy-in. If I had won 5 state championships when I came to Lovington it would be easy to convince people my vision works. But, with the radical ideas I have regarding the importance of winning and limited success while still in the early stages of my career creating instant buy-in has been difficult. Keeping consistent to your standards and core values will help create the right culture for your organization. Also make sure you bring in the right people to help carry out your vision. The people you lead need to feel valued, but also need to know that the organization will move on without them if needed to ensure the vision is carried out. This can be a very difficult thing to do. In 2016 I had 15 juniors and seniors quit the program because they didn’t agree with our vision. Players met with me on a few occasions to explain their position and to tell me if they don’t start, they would quit. I would always close with the same line “This program isn’t about you, it’s about others”. I was flexible in some areas (such as music during practice or allowing pregame practices to be done in shorts) but I held my ground when it came to compromising our core values. Expectations, standards, and core values are important for any organization. The most important thing is how you model them. Inconsistency causes inconsistency, stand tall on your core values and only be flexible if it doesn’t compromise what your organization stands for.

Important Takeaways

-Having Core values require enforcing them without compromise. However, learn what the nonessentials are & learn to diversify. (Example- I let players hit with head phones on during cage work days. I used to not allow this, but realized it doesn’t violate any of our team rules or values & players focused on the task better with music on.)

Quotes

“The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven.”

“The culture you create permeates everything you touch”

“Every team member is important to the whole, yet the team can move on without any individual.”

"Important but not indispensable"

“Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant”

“The mercenaries will always beat the draftees, but the volunteers will crush them both.”
