Games to watch -- week of Oct. 16

Six days until selection Sunday, with much still to be determined. When I mention MaxPreps rankings below, note that those rankings are from last Friday and thus the Friday and Saturday games won’t have been factored into the rankings yet (although those games won't affect the rankings much). I have grouped the games together by district.

Tuesday:
Eldorado (9-5-2) vs. La Cueva (12-0-4)
Clovis (10-8) at Sandia (7-9)

La Cueva should be seeded first or second at state. Sandia is an interesting seeding question. They are No. 15 right now, which would seem to leave them out. But they are 5-3 in district, just behind Eldorado (5-2-1), and finish with Clovis and Manzano while Eldorado still has this game with La Cueva. Eldorado has the tiebreaker over Sandia on goal differential. If Sandia finishes ahead of Eldorado, they probably both get in, bumping another bubble team. If Sandia doesn't finish ahead of Eldorado, they are probably out.
Las Cruces (10-7-1) at Onate (12-6)
Mayfield (15-2-1) at Hobbs (11-4-2)
Gadsden (11-7) at Carlsbad (6-11)

3-6A has a lot left to decide. Here are the leaders with district records and MaxPreps rankings:
Mayfield 9-1 (4)
Hobbs 7-2-1 (8)
Las Cruces 5-4-1 (12)
Gadsden 6-5 (13)
Onate 5-5 (7)

Mayfield hasn’t quite clinched the district but one win this week or a Hobbs loss will do it. Hobbs already beat Mayfield once, in Las Cruces. Onate is the big question mark, because their MaxPreps ranking is high but right now they would have to be seeded behind four other teams, which might leave them out altogether. LC and Onate may not both make the tournament, so their game on Tuesday is big.
Albuquerque High (14-1-1) at Highland (10-5-1)
Atrisco Heritage (7-7-2) at Rio Grande (4-10-2)

AHS is playing for the No. 1 seed in 6A; Highland (ranked No. 11) is playing for a berth at state. Atrisco is also on the bubble. They are No. 10 in the rankings, but will have to be behind Highland and need to hold on to their one-game lead over Valley for third in the district.
Alamogordo (14-3-1) at Santa Teresa (9-6-1)
Deming (4-11-1) at Chaparral (10-8)

Here are the district records from 3-5A and MaxPreps rankings:
Alamogordo 4-0 (3)
Chaparral 2-2 (7)
Deming 1-2-1 (14)
Santa Teresa 0-3-1 (5)

Alamogordo is the district champ and has a shot at the No. 1 seed at state, but they have two road games this week. Santa Teresa needs to pass Deming in the standings (and Deming has the tiebreaker over them); if they don’t, Santa Teresa could miss state altogether despite their high MaxPreps ranking (or, more likely, be seeded No. 12) because they would have to be seeded behind Deming.
Artesia (8-8-2) at Roswell (12-5). Artesia has a mathematical chance to win this district, and they played Roswell tough in their first meeting. If they don’t win the district, they are on the bubble for state (No. 11 ranking right now). Roswell has a shot for the No. 4 seed.

Wednesday:
Hope Christian (17-1) at St. Pius (10-3-4). How’s this for a late-season non-district game? St. Pius, Academy and Alamogordo should be the top three 5A seeds, but the order is still up in the air. Hope has locked up No. 1 in A-4A.
Del Norte (3-12-2) at Academy (12-4-2). Del Norte has just three wins and is 0-5 in district, and yet at No. 12 in MaxPreps still has a chance at state. They have played the second toughest schedule in 5A, behind Academy, and have a win over Sandia. The Knights were competitive with Capital and Los Alamos and really are just the victim of being in a tough district.

Thursday:
Volcano Vista (11-4-1) at Piedra Vista (7-11)
Rio Rancho (12-4-2) at Cibola (5-10-2)

1-6A leaders’ district records and 6A rankings:
Cleveland 5-1-1 (6)
Rio Rancho 4-1-1 (3)
Volcano Vista 4-2 (5)

No other district has three teams this good. It will be interesting to see if the winner of this district gets seeded ahead of Mayfield, if Mayfield holds on and wins its district. The Volcano-Cleveland game on Saturday is the key remaining matchup. If Cleveland wins that, it will win the district; if Volcano wins, the champ will probably be Rio Rancho, which only has Cibola and PV left on its schedule.
Capital (12-5-1) at Los Alamos (13-6). Los Alamos will finish second in the district unless Capital wins this game by three goals. The Hilltoppers may be the No. 4 seed at state.
Valencia (8-9-1) at Los Lunas (9-9). Valencia is like Aztec last year – they are a solid second in a weak district, but also have a low ranking (No. 13) that puts them on the bubble. Los Lunas has a higher ranking (No. 10) but can’t catch Valencia unless they win by enough here to overcome the minus-two goal differential.

Friday:
Atrisco Heritage vs. Albuquerque High
Highland vs. Valley (7-9)

Saturday:
Piedra Vista at Rio Rancho
Volcano Vista at Cleveland
Las Cruces at Mayfield
Onate at Centennial
Carlsbad at Hobbs
La Cueva at Clovis
Academy at St. Pius
. How’s THIS for a late-season non-district game? Academy will likely be the No. 1 seed in 5A if they win this. SPX is the likely No. 1 seed if they beat both Hope and AA this week, which is a tough task. Academy has been very stingy of late, giving up only two goals in its last six matches, and both of those were on penalty kicks.
Capital at Farmington (11-4-2). Another interesting non-district game. A loss here could put Farmington in the same situation it was in last year -- a district champ sent on the road for the first round.
Santa Teresa at Chaparral
Alamogordo at Deming

Final* MaxPreps rankings

These aren't really the final rankings, because there are two days to go in the season and MaxPreps will update the rankings one more time before the seeds are announced. But they won't change much between now and then.

6A:
1. Albuquerque High
2. La Cueva
3. Mayfield
4. Rio Rancho
5. Volcano Vista
6. Cleveland
7. Onate
8. Eldorado
9. Hobbs
10. Highland
11. Atrisco Heritage
12. Gadsden
13. Valley
14. Las Cruces
15. Sandia
16. West Mesa
17. Clovis
18. Cibola
19. Centennial
20. Santa Fe
21. Rio Grande
22. Carlsbad
23. Manzano
24. Piedra Vista

I think the top four seeds will be La Cueva, AHS, Mayfield, and the 1-6A champ, in that order, although you could make a pretty good argument for AHS as No. 1. As for the field, I think the top nine listed here get in, plus Sandia, Gadsden, and either Highland or AHA (whichever finishes higher in district).

5A:
1. Academy
2. Alamogordo
3. St. Pius
4. Los Alamos
5. Roswell
6. Santa Teresa
7. Chaparral
8. Farmington
9. Capital
10. Los Lunas
11. Del Norte
12. Deming
13. Valencia
14. Artesia
15. Aztec
16. Lovington
17. Goddard
18. Belen
19. Miyamura
20. Bloomfield
21. Kirtland Central
22. Gallup
23. Grants

I think the AA/SPX winner tomorrow will be No. 1 and the loser No. 2. It will be a playoff-like atmosphere for that game, especially because it is senior day for St. Pius. Alamo might sneak in at No. 2, but I think they will be third and Los Alamos fourth. The bottom of the bracket is interesting. Santa Teresa right now hasn't won a district game, but is No. 6 in these rankings. I think they end up near the bottom of the seeds, and if they get in, Deming has to get in above them. That leaves Los Lunas, Del Norte, Valencia, Artesia and Aztec in the running for the other two slots. Los Lunas has to be behind Valencia. I think it will be Valencia and Los Lunas, but who knows.

4A-A:
1. Hope Christian
2. Sandia Prep
3. Moriarty
4. Santa Fe Prep
5. Hatch Valley
6. Robertson
7. Socorro
8. Portales
9. Bernalillo
10. Bosque
11. Rehoboth Christian
12. NMMI
13. Taos
14. East Mountain
15. St. Michael's
16. Tierra Encantada
17. Monte del Sol
18. Silver
19. Ruidoso
20. Pojoaque Valley
21. Desert Academy
22. Questa
