Sorry for not posting last week. My father passed away and I was out of town. We are back on track and hopefully you have purchased your book & are following along.


Chapter 3: The Maturity of a Mentor Leader- “A Look Within”

1. Are you focused on the present and its possibilities for the future? Or are you letting your past failures hold you back? In the same thought how have your past experiences motivated you?

This area is hard at times to focus on. I have seen my share of failure in the past. I have been fired before and it has rattled my confidence. There are times I've questioned if this is what I was meant to do. One of my favorite quotes of all time "The true measure of a man is not what he does with success, its how he handles his failures." How sweet our success will be when our objectives are fulfilled. Every breath is a new beginning, approach it as such. In regard to motivation or "Why do I do this?" My past is what drives me to do this. I come from a long line of alcoholics, domestic violence, drug use, and absentee fathers. My mother had her first son at 14 years old and gave him up for adoption. To this day I have never met my oldest brother. My father never fully overcame his on-duty accident that ended his police career. While I have much respect for him, there where still times when you could see that he wasn't the same person afterwards. My why is I choose to be the example of a mentor leader so our students, athletes, and my son will see the standard of what it means to serve others and leave a true impact. This isn't just a job, this is what we were designed to be and anything less than all-in is unacceptable.

2. Evaluate your priorities, is your time going into things that truly matter?

When I was the Head Coach at Los Lunas I believed that I should win at all costs. 21 years old and no idea of the big picture, I couldn't see past the outfield fence. Everything to me revolved around winning. Later when I took the Head Baseball Job at Pojoaque I had to learn another lesson. We lived in Rio Rancho and the school was 70 miles from my front door, but I wanted to be a head coach more than anything. I got up every morning at 3:30am to ride the Railrunner to Santa Fe and then get in my car to drive to school. Most nights I got home by 10pm. Our son was born during my second year at Pojoaque. I never got to see him or my wife, I was either traveling or they were asleep. When I was home I was so tired all I did was sleep. I left the position because I had my priorities in the wrong place. Family should always come first.

3. Can you allow others to help you if their strengths are your weaknesses?

Pride always seems to creep up in this scenario. My current coaches on the baseball staff are there because they are stronger in areas that I am weak in. When I try to bring people in I look for just that "What strength do you have, that I don't?" It took me a long time to develop this mindset and to welcome others with strengths different than my own.

4. What are you doing for self growth?

Hubris was my worst enemy at the beginning of my coaching career. I thought I knew it all, it wasn't until Jim Johns the former Head Coach at Eldorado gave me a large slice of humble pie. The first time we played his team, not only were we outplayed but I was completely outcoached. He had my signs stolen and knew everything I was gonna do before I did it. My coaching and teaching styles have evolved so much over the past 10 years. I realized I needed to learn and adopted a hobby of researching everything. I mean everything from which foot should touch first base as you're rounding the base (it doesn't matter, your angle to the base is more important) to whether students retain more information from a written text or a computer screen (recent research suggests using written text shows higher reading comprehension & recall). I stopped asking what can I get out of this & began to ask what can others get out of this? So many people think good enough is good enough. When you stop growing, you start dying. Never stop growing.
