Games to watch -- week of Sept. 25

There aren’t as many intriguing matchups on the schedule this week, at least on paper. Please feel free to mention any other interesting games.

Tuesday:
Mayfield (10-2-1) at Las Cruces (8-4-1)
. Mayfield is 4-1 in district and Las Cruces is 3-1-1, just behind Hobbs and ahead of Gadsden in this very competitive district.
Alamogordo (9-3-1) at Roswell (8-5). Good non-district matchup. Both teams could use a quality win for seeding purposes. Roswell could find itself as a district champ that does not get a top-four seed and bye at state.

Thursday:
Chaminade at La Cueva (6-0-2)
. Chaminade is a Catholic private school in St. Louis which is coming to Albuquerque to play La Cueva and Sandia Prep.

Friday:
Capital (10-2-1) at Academy (6-4-2)
. Big district opener for both teams, so let's dive in a little deeper. Capital is trying to show that it is a true 5A contender this year – they have a great record, but their schedule is suspect (fourth easiest out of the 23 5A teams so far, per MaxPreps). They had a chance to make a statement against St. Pius but lost 2-0 at home. This is Academy’s first game against a 5A team – they have played 10 games vs. 6A teams, plus Hope Christian and Bosque. Academy is clearly more vulnerable this year – the last time they lost more than three games in a season was 2012, and they have already lost four this season. But the Chargers have played the toughest schedule in the state, tougher even than any 6A team has played. So they are still one of the 5A favorites. This will be Academy’s first game in 10 days, so we will see if that leaves them rusty or rested.

Saturday:
Hope Christian (11-1) at Moriarty (8-3-1). As of right now, these are the two top-ranked teams in A-4A. With the game in Moriarty, this would seem on paper like the best chance for anyone in that district to knock off Hope. But in all likelihood the Huskies will roll.
La Cueva vs. Eldorado (6-3-1). La Cueva has given up just four goals in eight games, and four of those matches went to overtime, so they are giving up only about a goal every 175 minutes or so. But Eldorado is fairly explosive, so this will be interesting. The two games with Eldorado are the biggest obstacle between La Cueva and an undefeated regular season.

When was the last time

There is no intent to hurt anybody's feeling with this post. Just some interesting items in the current football season.

1. When was the last time two teams from Albq, were rated one and two in the 6A poll?

2. In 6A, when was the last time the only undefeated teams in the state going into week 6 were from Albq?

3. When was the last time a number one team in 6A was mercy ruled?

4. When was the last time the LCPS had a combined record of 6-13 going into week 6?

5. Hearing some noise from St. Teresa and Chaparral, instead of Mayfield, Onate and Centennial.

6. NMSU SWEPT LOBOS AND MINERS. (2002 I think)

feel free to add.
