OT: New Mexico Highlands University Senior Day

As many of you know I have a career working in higher education. Many of you that have reached out via text, email or phone calls and have got to know me over the years, know that my passion is to help out students and our student-athletes. I was fortunate to have a high school coach who wanted to make sure we had a plan for college. I have also pushed former players to do the same thing and was fortunate to hire many at UNM when I worked there. Simply put I want to make a positive impact. Not everyone will play college sports however, we all can go to college and achieve our dreams.

So the reason for my long post.....

I am hosting an event for high school seniors and juniors who are looking to gain more information about college, HU Round Up on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017. New Mexico Highlands continues to rank as the most affordable University in New Mexico, Southwest and Nation. Your student will be taught by faculty members (89% hold the highest degree in their field). The fun side is our extra (outdoor recreation, ski trips, concerts, outdoor equipment) does not cost extra.

The cool part though is the event with be in conjunction with a football game. So if you'd like to see the Cowboys take on the 2014 DII National Champs CSU-Pueblo we are giving that option. Food, T-Shirts and information regarding our school along with a speech from our President, Dr. Sam Minner.

I promise this will be my only classifieds news like this. It would be cool to see some teams make it up. our new field should be complete by then as well.

Games to watch -- week of Sept. 11

(Note -- the records listed in these posts are from MaxPreps, and are only as up to date as the coaches inputting them).

Tuesday:
Volcano Vista (6-1) at St. Pius (1-3-1)
. Volcano Vista is lurking under the radar as a possible 6A title contender. Their only loss is to Valley in overtime, and they have one-goal wins over Cleveland, Rio Rancho and Atrisco Heritage.
Eldorado (4-2-1) at Albuquerque High (4-1-1). Eldorado has lost to Rio Rancho and Cleveland and could use a signature win against a 6A team.
Hobbs (5-2-1) at Las Cruces (5-4). Las Cruces needs a district win after losing to Gadsden in its opener.
Los Alamos (8-2) at Farmington (1-2-1).
Capital (6-1-1) at Santa Fe (4-1-1).
Academy (5-1-2) at Atrisco Heritage (1-3-2)
. Atrisco has played a tough schedule and has been very competitive in every game, but at some point they have to beat a top-notch team to be considered a real contender.

Wednesday:
Valley (4-3) at Rio Rancho (6-3)

Thursday:
Academy at Albuquerque High
St. Pius at La Cueva (4-0-2
). St. Pius started its season later than most other teams and now faces a tough stretch – they have four games in eight days against Volcano, La Cueva, Farmington and Grants.
Alamogordo (6-3-1) at Artesia (4-3). Alamo just had its most impressive win, 4-0 over Hobbs. Artesia has played a fairly easy schedule thus far, but this is still a very impressive start for them considering that they only won five games in the last three seasons combined.

Friday:
Los Alamos at Piedra Vista (7-3)
. The Hilltoppers spent the weekend in Albuquerque and are making the three-hour drive to Farmington twice this week.
Farmington at St. Pius

Saturday:
Socorro (5-3-1) at Moriarty (5-1-1)
Gadsden (7-2) at Hobbs
Mayfield (7-1-1) at Centennial (5-4)

Helmet to Helmet

it's been called several times in our games this year on all levels and it's a point of emphasis. My question is, are officials required to be Heads up certified like the coaches?

The certification teaches to lead with same foot same shoulder. But then what looks like is about to be a clean shoulder tackle turns into a helmet to helmet and a flag. I just kinda shrug my shoulders because what we coach and what's enforced are different.

Leadership Week 2

Chapter 2: The Mindset of a Mentor Leader- “It’s not about me”

1. Are you prepared to have great success and not get any credit for it?

This is something I think a players struggle with the most. I know I do. We want the awards, the validation of our efforts, & the credit when credit is due. When it comes down to it none of what we do in this profession should ever be for our success. We chose a profession of serving others. The problem with winning individual awards is there is no one to share your award with. Our staff and students/athletes' success is our success.

2. What is your vision for the future?

Better people make better Wildcats. I want a program that continually regenerates leadership and successful people on and off the field. I would also like to grow this leadership philosophy into the standard within our district.

I still hear the phrase "Welcome to Lovington" when something goes wrong. Why is mediocrity acceptable? WE ARE LOVINGTON & its time we echoed that in everything we do.

3. What is your mission statement? Does it answer why do you do this?

Create a culture of empowering student/athletes to have the tools for success in life. Build a regenerative mentor leader program that creates future leaders and provides a positive example for all of the student/athletes we influence.

4. Are your values present in your leadership style?

Kids can tell if your genuine and sincere. Every rule we enforce with the players is enforceable on the coaches. Our baseball staff has been disciplined for violating teams rules. From pushups for bad language, to running for leaving out equipment, to now even I have grade checks for my masters classes we enforce it all.

Important Takeaways

-Build Leadership that regenerates to help create a successful organization
-People should notice your amazing team, staff, or child rather than what a great coach, employer, or parent you are. Make others the best THEY can be.
-Enjoy the journey as well as the destination. Your focus on results could cloud your view of the present
-Not everyone will embrace your vision or have the patience to trust the process
-Situational Leadership- your style of leadership will depend on the audience and the situation

Quotes

“It’s not about me. It’s not about you. It’s about others”
“Humble servant leadership demonstrates to those you lead that you see them as valuable, and it’s worth your time to serve them, not to have them serving you.”
