Games to watch - week of Aug. 28

Tuesday:
Los Alamos at St. Pius. St. Pius opens its season against 5-0 Los Alamos. Big early-season 5A game with state seeding implications.
Santa Fe Prep at Hope Christian. Another game with implications for seeding at state, this one in A-4A. Hope looks like the team to beat in that class this year, but SF Prep is the defending champ.
Sandia at Cibola. Both teams are off to poor starts, and one of them is going to take another L here in the APS Metro tournament.
Hobbs at Clovis. Rematch of the game two weeks ago which Hobbs won 1-0 in two overtimes.
Gadsden at Santa Teresa. Another rematch of rivals. ST won 3-0 on Gadsden's home field, the only loss for the Panthers thus far.
Cleveland vs. Volcano Vista. These teams are the top teams in 1-6A, and get an early look at each other in the Metro tournament.
Las Cruces at Alamogordo. These two teams missed each other at the LC tournament, but match up today.

Wednesday:
Albuquerque High vs. La Cueva. This Metro tourney semifinal is a rematch of last year's 6A state final, and both of these teams look like title contenders again this year. Some think La Cueva is the clear favorite in 6A this year, but AHS is loaded as well.
Academy vs. Valley. The other Metro tourney semi, and another strong matchup.

Thursday:
Piedra Vista at Miyamura. Piedra Vista is off to a 5-1 start and won the Aztec tournament last week. Miyamura is 3-2.
St. Pius at Our Lady of Good Counsel. Anyone have a scouting report on Our Lady of Good Counsel? This is part of a three-game trip that St. Pius is making to the Washington DC area.

Friday
Roswell tournament.
This is usually a good tourney and a rare chance for some inter-sectional play. Capital will be there, and opens with Goddard.
APS Metro final. Will the AHS/La Cueva winner have a letdown, allowing the AA/Valley winner a chance to steal the title?

Saturday
Hope Christian at Piedra Vista
. Hope has a pretty challenging schedule for an A-4A team, including this trip to play a 6A opponent.

Cleveland Grad Desmond Branch

Defensive tackle Desmond Branch, slated to start alongside Kyle Cerge-Henderson, has gained about 10 pounds from last season, to 280, in his move to the interior. Branch, a junior-college transfer, began the season at defensive end............

Former Clovis star Kamal Cass named LCS co-offensive POY

Former Clovis standout Kamal Cass of Eastern New Mexico was named pre-season co-Offensive Player of the Year by Lone Star Conference coaches during the recent LCS Media Days in late July.

Last season Kass lead the league with 1,191 rushing yards and 108.3 yards per game last season. The 5-11 senior also scored 14 touchdowns, scoring in nine of 11 games for the Greyhounds in 2016. With those accomplishments in his resume, Kass earned the LCS' Offensive Back of the Year honor last season and was the only ENMU player to earned LCS First Team All-Conference honors.

Boys South Update

Before the cold cans and pay per view start, let me fill you in on the boys teams in the south, now that the LCPS tournament is complete:

1st off: the LCPS schools are set and primed to be a force again in the next year or two....maybe not this one, but soon.

Onate boys won the tournament, beating Mayfield.
Onate is just full throttle, pedal to the metal. They defend well and they transition very well. They might be a legit player in district if they can keep it together. They have a history of these good starts only to fade away in September and October.
Mayfield is quickly getting their ship righted. They are overall young (5-6 seniors) and play a very possession based game. They spread you out and cut you open with sharp passing (we learned that lesson Friday). Look for them to maybe get to the playoff round and possibly advance.

LC beat Centennial for 3rd.
Cruces is young and at first glance look small, but boy can they move the ball. This is the team to watch in the year or two if they hold together.
Centennial had a lackluster tourney. Of the teams I would've picked to win it, it wouldve been Centennial. Cant say why they ended up at 4th place, but they need to find themselves the next few games before district rolls around.

As you can see, all four 6A schools placed 1-4. How will that pan out in district, who knows? But if they keep beating each other....who is gonna beat Hobbs? They each need to steal one vs Hobbs to make this one crazy race.

All four 5A schools placed 5th-8th. All four are in the same district, so that leads to many questions.

ST beats Alamo for 5th
ST were severely humbled by a strong Mayfield team 1-6 in the first round. ST then won the next game vs Deming 4-0. The game vs Alamo could be a precursor to the district standings. The game was fast, intense and did not feel like a 5th place game for both teams...there were severe undertones throughout. From our POV Alamo was 3rd in district last year and they still have to go through us and Chapa.
Alamo...dont crown them yet. They go 1-2 with their win vs Chapa and the two losses vs Onate and Santa Teresa. As objectively as possible, the pieces are there, but they are not playing with the same flair or nous as last season. They came in flying with their early big wins, but will this ground them or motivate them?

Chapa beats Deming for 7th
Chapa is not the same Chapa...yet. They have been without their top returning goalscorer due to an eye injury all season. They played Alamo tough. Result was 2-4, but that score is not indicative of how the game went. The difference here was Foltz for Alamo. Alamo had the true scorer, Chapa doesnt have theirs...yet.
Deming has a new coaching staff and tons of new players. I still stand by my claim that Lalo Amaya is one of the better players in the district. He buzzed the Centennial goal multiple times in the opener, was highly marked and watched in the ST game and did not play in the Chapa game.

Rio Rancho has some size

Rio Rancho's starting receiving corp:

Reyes 6ft 4in 230 lbs
Emalhy 6ft 6in 240 lbs
Patterson 6ft 2in 155 lbs
Hise 5ft 11in 175 lbs (he's the speed burner)
(Is there a bigger receiving corp anywhere?)
QB Bruere 6ft 4in 210 lbs

As Yodice said, these guys will be a tough match up for any set of DB's in the state.

On the line:

Banks 6ft 4in 260 lbs DE (San Diego St. Commit)
Tafoya 6ft 4in 280 lbs T (Utep Commit)

Just some interesting facts. Mayfield was tough and scrappy but they were not in the same league size wise. Their DB's took a beating from the sheer size of the Rio Rancho receivers. Rio Rancho is a very physical team on both sides of the ball. If you beat them you will have to do it for 4 quarters and that will not be easy.
