Starting Five: Early On They Are Making Noise

Matt Vail, Sr, Grants High School: Continues to poor in the points and being in a role this season that has let us see his true talents. Currently at 23 points per game as the Pirates are exceeding expectations.

Triston McCarty, Sr, La Cueva High School: The shooting guard for the Bears is having hands down one of the best years, shooting over 70% from behind the line.

Jose Vigil, Jr, West Mesa High School: The Mustangs guard is playing to his potential and at 20 points per game people are taking notice.

Anthony Chavez, Jr, Valley High School: The junior guard is one we have kept a close eye on this season and he continues to excel, he poured in 30 points, followed by a 22 point performance last week.

Jacob Esquivel, Sr, Lordsburg High School: Small school love right now as Esquivel the stud on the gridiron is also doing work on the hardwood. Had a pair of games with highs of 40 points and 30 points in back to back games.

Sixth Man: Bryce McAlister, Artesia High School. I've given my two cents on how high I am on McAlister. However, all players on this list, I couldn't leave out McAlister who returns to the court this season and could be the best all around in NM this season.

The SF New Mexican has an article today that states Richard Martinez's brother, Richard, lead the first practice of the season yesterday. The article also said that, PED spokesman, Robert McEntyre reiterated over the weekend that PED intends to revoke Richard's teaching and coaching licenses. Dragging this out is really not fair to the players, but i have a feeling that its more about hitting the EVPS admin/board where it hurts the most.

Best Cross-Classification Game: No. 22 Santa Fe (6-3) vs West Las Vegas (6-2). I spend a lot of time in Las Vegas, if I was there on Friday night I would be in this gym. This is a must see game.

Trap Game: No. 12 Belen (6-1) at Alamogordo (6-4). This one takes place on Friday. Belen hasn't been ranked this high in over 8-years. However, they get the team that could only get better throughout the season and could look to steal a resume game at home.

Playoff Seed Game: No. 15 Grants (6-2) vs No. 17 Espanola Valley (6-0). On Saturday the Port in Grants will be jam packed (or it should) for this match up. We continue to get the question on 5A, that is a tough question but this should shed some light into who is Top-8 in 5A.

Best Under-the-Radar Game: No. 21 La Cueva (2-3) at No. 23 Hobbs (3-2). Resume, resume, resume is a word that we will use in the era of seeding the state tournament. This is one of those resume games.

Oddly Intrigued Game: Los Alamos (4-3) vs No. 4 Eldorado (2-1). The Eagles of Eldorado travel north to Los Alamos as the Hilltoppers host one of the highest ranked teams (I think) in recent history. Why? I believe this is the hometown of Eldorado head coach Roy Sanchez, is this a farewell tour? Likely not but speculations swirl.

This is coming from a guy who LOVED the bowl system, so take it with a grain of salt. But...Those who cried about polls and controversy and the best teams not playing each other have brought us a system base solely on polls. Conferences do not matter in the least - and that is a shame. Those who cried about teams not going head to head now have to argue that head to head is not important. Penn State will watch the team they beat compete for the title.
There are too many good teams - the bowl system offered many teams a chance to play for a national championship - even if it was "mythical." A poll then named a champion.
A poll names the four teams who may be "champions," where is the change? New Year's Day Bowl games once meant something; now, they are relegated to games of also-rans accompanied by a parade. Bring back the Bowls!
