Grine: Head Coach Candidates. Jobs Open

Grine: Head Coach Candidates

The New Mexico change in head coach duties is quietly underway for the 2017 season.

Right now we have three jobs that are open with the possibility of the mentioned-not mentioned possible opening of Clovis High School. It was mentioned by a member that longtime head coach Eric Roanhaus would retire at seasons end. That is still yet to be confirmed.

So this is what we know. Hatch Valley this 4A power will be looking for a new head coach after head coach Jack Cisco retired. The Bears won the 2015 4A state championship along with reaching the 4A semi-finals after a 10-3 season in 2016.

Next, we have the opening of Santa Fe High School, a program that will have to get creative with the hiring of their next head coach. The Demons football program is currently riding a 24-game losing streak dating back to the 2014 football season.

Lastly, the third opening on the board currently is that of the 2016 5A state champion St. Pius X Sartans football program. Longtime head coach San Juan Mendoza has retired from coaching after guiding the Sartans to the State Championship earlier this month. Mendoza, led the Sartans programs from the 1996 season and won two titles, played in three during his tenure.

Top Candidates in the State

AJ Cisco
Background: The offensive coordinator for one of the top offenses in the classification. They have some offensive weapons returning and if they stay in house (I'll say that again) another top candidate to keep things moving.

Andrew Martinez
Background: Another coach that Santa Fe should call (don't wait for these candidates Santa Fe we will list some for you) but the question would he leave the current program (we will say that a lot).

Brandon Darlington
Background: The OL coach for the 6A state champions is another that is likely to stay with the program but Santa Fe could throw the house at a title winning coach that needs to start from ground zero.

Chad Roanhaus
Background: The one time head coach of New Mexico Highlands and two time champion Robertson Cardinals. Could he possibly make the move to Santa Fe and design from ground (I know likely not) however on the list especially if Clovis opens.

Chris Howe
Background: Rio Rancho is hands down the top program in the state for 6A football right now. Howe, another that would likely stay put for another high profile job in the Albuquerque Metro area but an interview for practice with the wishes for Santa Fe could be there. Another one that you should see his name is at St. Pius X. I know they are likely to stay in house but in all honesty this would be my first call.

Eric Lucero
Background: The DC for the Estancia Bears is one of the under the radar candidates on the list but the stats show that he could be one to consider. Santa Fe, we have another for you to call. Would he take the drive that way is another question (yup I said that again for Santa Fe)

Jason Salas
Background: The Bulldawgs defense could be one of the more underrated in the state this past season. Salas is another that will wait but if another 6A opens or maybe Hatch Valley this could be another name.

Jeff Hoffman
Background: The OL for the Cleveland Storm he has orchestrated some of the top OLs in New Mexico with several players at the next level.

Jeff Willingham
Background: Willingham is likely to stay with the orange of Artesia but the defensive coordinator should be a candidate for any opening this season.

John Roanhaus
Background: The Belen DC is starting to get his recognition and likely to continue building the Eagles into a power next year, will be one this year and in the future.

Louis Howell
Background: Defensive coordinator for the Hatch Valley Bears. Howell, if the Bears stay in house could have an advantage with the job.

Word on the Street

Clovis High School - waiting on confirmation if coach Roan has retired.

Hatch Valley High School - Cisco and Howell right now if you are staying in house. No word at this point.

Santa Fe High School - Handful of coaches they could call however they will likely wait and wait is what they will do. No word on candidates yet.

St. Pius X - Another school that has retired a state champion HC. No idea if in-house or what direction with this job though.

This is why people hate Hobbs

Yesterday in a freshman boys basketball game, Hobbs was ahead by 30+ points. With 2 and a 1/2 minutes left in the game the Hobbs coach pulls the kids on the court and puts the starters back in and starts pressing again.

The looks on those Hobbs kids faces when they got pulled was pure dejection! What was he trying to prove? So you win by 36 instead of 28-30 points. He didn't hurt the psyche of the losing team, they already knew they didn't play well and were beat but absolutely killed his own kid's psyche by not letting them get that precious time on the court. They probably only get to play in blowouts so why not let them finish the game? They will never get that time back. The Hobbs bench kids will only remember that they got yanked cause of a piss poor coach's ego ride.

I never want to see a kid get hurt, but you just wish one of those Hobbs starters would have gotten hurt during that time so that you can tell the a$@hole coach "that's what you get for putting them back in". The guy doesn't deserve to be working with kids. Gives coaches a bad image and name when he pulls crap like this!! And don't give me it's a Hobbs tradition or that if you don't want to be beat bad then just get better. At the freshman level that coach has a responsibility to develop those kids, ALL OF THEM not just the few that get to play all the time. Off my soap box and thanks for the venting!!

Daily Word: Tuesday Hoops in Week 5

Tuesday Hoops in Week 5

6A Game of the Night: Santa Fe (6-2) vs Espanola Valley (5-0). Both teams are ranked and the 6A team in the game - Santa Fe - has the opportunity to get a signature win over a Top-25 team.

5A Game of the Night: Roswell (4-1) vs Carlsbad (3-3). Roswell is the 5A team in the game. They suffered their first loss of the season but have a chance to recover against a good, top-25, Carlsbad team.

4A Game of the Night: Portales (2-0) vs Goddard (4-4). Portales is the 4A team in the game and they have a chance here to give them a look. Sort of in the group of unknown 4A teams this season, Goddard is a vulnerable team to get a quality win.

Rivalry Game: Bernalillo (2-5) vs Grants (4-2). It's been 12-years since the brawl in the Port but this one puts a rivalry of two towns that is still underrated for the term rivalry.

Playoff Implications: Lordsburg (7-1) vs Cobre (2-4). It's a cross classification game but the Cobre Indians are the 4A team that need a win here. However, for Cobre it won't be a bad loss as Lordsburg could be a 2A favorite.

Hurt/Help: Alamogordo (5-4) vs Silver (5-1). This game could be in the hurt/help section for both programs. Alamogordo has played a tough schedule but could need the win to help the resume. Silver is a potential DC and works for the criteria.

Regional SE Game: Hobbs (2-2) vs Lovington (3-5). Anytime two programs from the same region square off the hype shouldn't need to be there. Both of these teams could use a win to get things on track.

Regional NW Game: Piedra Vista (4-3) vs Shiprock (2-7). The Panthers are ranked in the Top-25 (No. 25) this week but this one could be a trap game for them with a historically good Shiprock program.

On the Fringe Game: St. Pius X (4-2) vs Gallup (2-5). Gallup will play in their fifth game in six days (took off Sunday) as both programs are surprisingly on the fringe of the Top-10 for 5A basketball. Both will likely be the teams you see in March after a slowish start.

Santa Fe High and Capital

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/ne...cle_aad0fb57-b3b6-586c-8f1d-7cdc8e7df48c.html

The school board in Santa Fe voted to change the attendance boundaries for both Capital and Santa Fe high schools to even out student enrollment. The plan goes into effect in school year 2017-18.

Interestingly, the article in the New Mexican says that Capital has about 1,500 students right now and SFHS has about 1,300. SFHS is in 6A right now and Capital is in 5A.

The plan is for each school to have about 1,300 students. That would put both schools on the 6A/5A bubble. Per the article, without the boundary change, Santa Fe High’s population likely would drop to about 1,240 within a decade while Capital High’s could exceed 1,600.

Grine: Week Four Creates Buzz, Confusion & Unanswered Questions

Grine: Week Four Creates Buzz, Confusion & Unanswered Questions

The week was packed with games, could be considered the first week of the basketball season as all teams are officially on the board with games. The amount of undefeated teams as dwindled with some movement in our Top-25 rankings we still have plenty to learn about the 2016/2017 season.

Teams that impressed

1. Cleveland: Currently the top ranked in the State of New Mexico with a 7-0 record. The Storm had a close call with fellow Top-25 team in the Los Lunas Tigers (No. 5) but came out on top of their four team round robin.

2. Artesia: The Bulldogs are known for football. A town that bleeds orange now has reason to head over to the Bulldog Pit - So do it! The Bulldogs won their own tournament for the first time in over ten years and large part was a revamped roster but also a well coached team. They are 3-0 on the season with wins over Rio Rancho and Gallup.

3. Hope Christian: It should be against the rules that the 4A power is in this section. Are we ever impressed or is it the norm to expect the Huskies to be ranked high and beating all on their schedule? The Huskies finished the 2016 season ranked number one and they now sit at number two after winning the Joe Armijo Tournament (Albuquerque Academy).

4. Capital: The Jaguars have re-grouped from making a head sctratching decision to let go of Ben Gomez. He has returned and the Jaguars have returned to the top of the state in boys basketball. The took home the championship at the Capitol City tournament with wins over Hobbs and Santa Fe.

Players on the rise

1. Bryce McAlister (Artesia): I am breaking more rules here but if we had our player rankings releasing in December, the top player in the state is Bryce McAlister. The 6-foot-7 guard did it all. I might be premature in saying this but he is the top prospect, he left me in awe, at his size he was a point guard a majority of the time but just made things go.

2. Jarrett Graham (Piedra Vista): We've heard the name however we didn't expect much from the Panthers. They had an overall solid weekend and ranked in the Top-25. He had a 26-point performance last week.

3. Marlon Cunningham (Albuquerque): The big man who has committed to UNM had an 18-point performance as teams will zero in on him all season long. Plenty of talent in New Mexico this season and Cunningham is at the top of that list.

4. Juan Hurt (Rio Rancho): When last seasons Mr. Basketball - Clay Patterson - went down with an injury the savvy guard stepped up. He can stroke from the outside, we knew that, but he penetrated and took over as a floor general. I like this kids attitude and game.

Confusion

Rankings. Yes, we love them, we love to hate them, we love to debate them, we love to talk about them. We love that we will always have them (some of us at least). This is the thing this season - we will have to wait a few more weeks until we see the separation.

6A

Valley: They moved down this week and this is why. We just don't know who they are. They don't have a terrible resume but also the 4-point win over Los Alamos just hurt.

Clovis: Okay, Wildcats I will backpedal fast. I said they were a year away from being a year away from returning. They have solid wins on their resume that include Carlsbad and La Cueva.

Atrisco: Do we know how good they are this season? We didn't expect them to be any place near the Top-10 - they are 9th. They have a lone loss to another surprise team in Eldorado. It might take time but one thing is for certain that Adrian Ortega led teams are always the best underachieving team in NM.

Hobbs: The loss to Capital on the resume doesn't kill them, Capital is 9-0. However, who would ever see the day Hobbs would lose to Capital. We are waiting for the players to return but this could be season we just don't see the Eagles in the PIT. That is something we will have to wait and see.

5A

Top 10? Okay for 8-teams we know they are good but after that is the biggest who the ____ knows.

Kirtland Central: Their is excitement brewing but we are in a waiting game with the Broncos still. The coming weeks the schedule features some tell all games.

Belen: The Eagles beat a good Roswell team. I wouldn't have taken that bet but why bet against head coach Patrick Mondragon. The Eagles are the real deal this season and I don't see us waiting to long to make the claim to pack their backs for the PIT.

St. Pius X: We continue to wait for the Sartans to be the Sartans we know. Another one of those programs that has a head coach that is at the top of the chain. The loss to HIghland just makes us scratch the head.

Los Alamos: It has been a long time - back to the Alex years - that the Hilltoppers have been discussed in basketball. Well, I think they are back - how long is what we have to wait for.

Final Word

Artesia. I can't begin to tell you about a first class place. Top down this town has some special people. I wish I could mention everyone that I met along with the people who I got to talk to again. The ladies that take tickets at the door, the gym master, the administration (AD, assistant principle and more), radio announcers and parents. Oh yeah I can't forget my favorite person in the building my dude Ryder. I spent a few hours talking, laughing and overall just thankful that I met you. Thank you for showing hospitality Artesia. I now claim you my home in the SE corner. PS thanks for adding 10 pounds to the scale (amazing food! We know I love to grub).

What did I miss??

Hi everyone! I had to take a self imposed (re: wife imposed) break from general soccer life for the past week. It was probably healthy, but I would still log on and lurk around the board to see what was happening. I'll try to hit on everything in one post:

The Weather Thread:
As usual and as stated, it was standard NMAA Soccer tourney weather. Thursday was the best whole day. Kinda cold and windy, but nowhere near what came down Friday noonish and on. Im glad we get a chance to see what Las Cruces can offer weather-wise next year. Someone commented that the wind affected play. If you kept the ball on the floor and played technical soccer it shouldnt have affected those teams, mainly us, even though we lost to SPX, we can say it wasnt weather related.

State Champions Thread:
This was the first time I can recall that there was not a single Las Cruces school represented in the tournament, boys or girls. If something like this becomes common, then it would be hard for LC to have a claim to hosting future tournaments. The only thing that could save them would be awesome facilities, awesome weather, and more southern teams to help the NMAA cash in. If not, back to ABQ area. Now, Bernalillo is a great complex, excellent fields. The biggest negative I got from our little group of fans was, the lack of proper bathrooms. After a 4-5 hour drive...port-a-potties arent the most welcoming relief area.

Someone mentioned it was interesting that 8/12 finalists were private schools....thats the norm. The only truly open division in soccer is 6A. There are powerhouses in 6A, but at least every team is on a level playing field. I told our AD, I would prefer a move up to 6A or whatever the next realignment brings just for peace of mind knowing that if you are good enough, deep enough, then you can have a fair shot at progressing and winning.
Pretty much no public school in A-4A has a chance to win the title....none. Taos can have a killer team...wont win it. Hatch can crash the party...rarely win it. Portales, Silver, Socorro, go on and on...none of those teams will have the depth to get thru possibly three private/charter schools and to the title. 5A boys can get some teams in and win, but none of them will be as dynastic as SPX and Academy. Look at what it costs teams like Roswell, Chapa, Capital in terms of staying power. They can have good cycles, but none has the reloading power of SPX & AA. This was our, Santa T, best shot at it and we will have to rebuild and take some lumps next year and maybe the next. Its even worse on the girls 5A side.

The southern schools have always been able to compete vs the north, I dont think this year was any different, just the match ups finally fell in the right place, it wasnt ST v Chapa in the 8v9 game like 2015. Two/three years ago ST traveled to Los Alamos and won in the playoff round, its been done. This year we took down both Farmington and Capital, and handily if I can be honest. I think/feel we played SPX evenly for those 80mins, they werent a level above us talent-wise or anything.
Alamo and Chapa played well, from what I've heard and been told, I wish we could've watched them in real time to give a better assessment. If you look at the All State teams and see how many players from those schools and Roswell finally got recognized you can see that those teams left impressions.

Closing
With all that said and done, I think the teams who won deserved so. I still only know most about 5A and our area. The soccer landscape hasnt shifted but there are signs that things could be interesting in the next few years.
