How important is the highlight video?

Interesting article on the importance of the highlight video to get a student/athlete noticed. ITSC has provided really good insight on the recruiting processes before and this supports a lot of what he shared with the NMPreps nation before.

Week 2 Recap

Week 2 Recap

It is definitely way too early for tournament predictions, but wins now can definitely help come March with seeding and selection. We saw state contenders win handily, decisive top-ranked matchups, and some head-turning wins/scores that have us wondering if there’s dark horse potential with some teams.

Opening Tip
[I’ll highlight a team performance or hoops news of the week here.]

Mayfield lost 3 of their top four scorers from last season and yet find themselves 3-0 after two weeks. Sure, two of those wins the Lady Trojans outscored their opponents 106-23, but the big key win came on the road in Los Lunas. Getting a close win in overtime (62-60) is something to brag about, but more importantly it may have seeding implications come March with Los Lunas being a serious district contender.

So with Valencia playing shorthanded this season without Destinee Vigil, the Lady Jags responded with a interesting 47-44 loss on the road in Gallup. Yes, a loss is a loss but I’ll gladly read into the score of this game. This is a Gallup team which was able to score 65 points against Shiprock in Week One, and also averaged 71 points per game last season. And a Gallup team that has only been held under 50 points FIVE times in their last 89 games prior to this game which would be the 6th time in the last 90 games. Are the Lady Jags to be reckoned with? We’ll have to wait and see, but by the looks of things if you can find a way to keep one of the state’s top scoring teams well below their average you might be winning some games.

In an early season marquee matchup, it was Las Cruces that came out victorious at home over the defending 5A state champs, Roswell, 39-34. The last time LC defeated Roswell was back in 2013 when the Lady Bulldawgs won by a similar score of 39-35. We’ll see if the two teams collide again in Rio Rancho’s tournament later next month.

Early Timeout
Los Lunas is 0-3. Should the Lady Tigers be worried? [Cue collective “eyeroll”] Absolutely not! We’re only two weeks into the new season and LL’s losses were all against teams in arguably the strongest district in 6A girls hoops. Centennial, Las Cruces, and Mayfield are all top-ranked teams in 6A. All that hurts Los Lunas are missed opportunities to capture a few good wins. The season is still young.

Fast Break
Which teams are starting off their season hot?

6A - Mayfield (3-0)
5A - Albuquerque Academy (2-0)
4A - Moriarty (3-0)
3A - Newcomb (3-0)
2A - Penasco (2-0) & Cliff (2-0)
1A - Springer (3-0) & Roy/Mosquero (3-0)

Quick Top 4 Rankings
Yes, I know. Rankings are something most will roll their eyes at or “sigh” in discontent after reading, but truth be told we all want to know or at least argue who is standing on top for now. Yes, we’re only two weeks in and most of these teams haven’t even played a game yet, but let’s just play along for now.

Class 6A
1. Carlsbad
2. Eldorado
3. Las Cruces
4. Cibola

Class 5A
1. Roswell
2. Espanola Valley
3. Gallup
4. Valencia

Class 4A
1. Hope Christian
2. Shiprock
3. Moriarty
4. West Las Vegas

Class 3A
1. Eunice
2. Tohatchi
3. Texico
4. Tularosa

Points-Off-The-Bench
[I’ll make key notes here regarding teams with dark horse potential that maybe need a closer look at. For this week the two teams I’ve overlooked are 4A Robertson and 2A Escalante.]

Robertson, I had in my 4A Top-10 before bumping them out for Taos just because I was a tad bit more familiar with the Lady Tigers. Since then the Lady Cardinals have made a serious statement early with big wins against fellow 4A Wingate (74-46) and the biggest win for them thus far on the road against 3A title contender Tohatchi (66-50).

I definitely haven’t done my homework in 2A girls hoops, and it might be too early to tell, but a win like the one Escalante earned on the road against a Cuba (60-42) squad is definitely a head-turner. Keep in mind Escalante has been 0-6 since 2008 against the Lady Rams and it hasn’t even been that close. Last year, Cuba defeated Escalante twice by an average margin of 18 points. In a district with Mora as the favorite, maybe they deserve some extra attention?

Outlet Pass (Looking Ahead at Week 3)
[I’ll make a quick note here about big games coming up the following week. A separate post will likely go into more detailed notes and mention more matchups to watch as the season progresses.]

Tuesday
· Santa Fe Indian at West Las Vegas
· Cibola at Hope Christian
· Hobbs at Roswell

Thursday
· Rio Rancho at Eldorado
· Bloomfield at Los Lunas
· Navajo Prep at Santa Fe Indian

Friday
· Cibola at Mayfield (!)
· Valley at Centennial

Saturday
· Las Cruces at Volcano Vista (!)
· Valencia at Los Alamos
· La Cueva at Hope Christian

Tournaments will be in full force this upcoming weekend. Please post any information regarding participating teams, brackets, and/or schedules you may know of in the “Outlet Pass - What To Watch This Week” post or the "Upcoming Tournaments Info" post for information on all upcoming regular season girls basketball tournaments.

Top Players from Week 2

· Sophie Long of Albuquerque Academy averaging 24 points through her first two games of the season.
· Esperanza Varos of West Mesa who put up 30 points, 5 assists, 5 steals and 4 boards and also went 19/19 from the line against Santa Fe.
· Jada Jones of Eunice put up 13 points, 12 boards, 9 assists, and 5 steals against West Las Vegas. This junior for the Lady Cardinals can stuff a stat sheet.

Beyond The Arc
Congratulations to the Cottonwood Classical Prep Lady Coyotes on starting their season off a 24-18 win over Santa Fe’s Academy for Technology and The Classics (I like to call them “ATC”). I believe this is the first varsity season for the Lady Coyotes who will be in a 3A district with Cuba, Laguna-Acoma, N.A.C.A. and Estancia.

NMAA Hall of Fame - Class of 2017

NMAA ANNOUNCES NMAA HALL OF FAME ‘CLASS OF 2017’

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The New Mexico Activities Association, in conjunction with the NMAA Hall of Fame Committee, announces the Class of 2017 for induction into the NMAA Hall of Fame. THIS IS CRAZY

Video: See controversial Fenwick-Plainfield North finish
Judge rules that Plainfield North's 18-17 state semifinal victory is upheld.

The Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.) football season ended in a courtroom Wednesday.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a Cook County judge ruled Wednesday against Fenwick's plea to overturn a disputed 18-17 Class 7A semifinal defeat to Plainfield North on Saturday.

The Illinois High School Association released a statement following the game outlining mistakes made by officials, giving Plainfield North an extra untimed down. That allowed the Tigers to kick a field goal to tie the game at 10-10 and send the game into overtime.

As seen above, Plainfield North won the contest on a touchdown and two-point conversion in overtime.

Fenwick (11-2) appealed to have the result overturned, eventually putting the matter in the hands of Judge Kathleen Kennedy. She cited a bylaw that noted decisions by officials on the field are final as part of her decision.

Barring more litigation, Fenwick's season is over. Plainfield North (11-2) is scheduled to play East St. Louis (13-0) in the state final.

The situation and ruling was similar to Central Michigan's 30-27 win at Oklahoma State on Sept. 11, when the winners were wrongly awarded an untimed down and then scored the game-winner on a Hail Mary.

In both games, the incorrect untimed downs were awarded after intentional grounding calls.

Chapecoense Real

I'm very sad about the news of the plane crash that involved the Brazilian club Chapecoense Real. I love to follow soccer from other countries and their story was a bit Leicester City-like since they were a small club that got promoted to Brazil's top league and were battling in the South American Cup. I was familiar with their story and today's tragedy is extremely heartbreaking.

Mark Lopez leads Las Cruces to Title Game In First Year

Las Cruces, New Mexico - In his first year as Head Coach of Las Cruces High School, Mark Lopez is taking the Bulldawgs (11-1) to the State Football Championship Game next weekend. Lopez was named the Head Football Coach before the 2016 season after longtime Head Coach Jim Miller announced his retirement.

Outlet Pass - What To Watch This Week

Looking Ahead to Week 3

Tuesday
· Santa Fe Indian at West Las Vegas: A rematch of last season's state quarterfinals when SFIS upended the Lady Dons' championship quest. This has head-to-head ("H2H") implications for March. SFIS lit up the scoreboard in their first game with over 70 points. Can the Lady Dons contain the new-looking Lady Braves?

· Cibola at Hope Christian: Last year should've been an indication as to how well Hope could be. The Lady Huskies did lose, but only by a margin of 7-points.

· Hobbs at Roswell: It's an early season homecoming! Joe Carpenter returns to the program he built to hopefully get the win with his Lady Eagles squad.

Thursday
· Rio Rancho at Eldorado: Rio Rancho was beaten by one against Sandia. They'll face another District 2 opponent in a tougher Eldorado team with Sydney Candelaria.

· Bloomfield at Los Lunas: Bloomfield will actually open up against former district opponent Shiprock on Tuesday, but this is a top-10 matchup between two 5A teams that strive on execution. This should be a great measuring stick to see where both teams are this early in the season.

· Navajo Prep at Santa Fe Indian: Entering 4A for the first time, Navajo Prep will look to steal a win against fellow Santa Fe Indian. A win would be huge Prep, as they're already looking up to Shiprock in their district.

Friday
· Cibola at Mayfield (!): Mayfield has been playing well lately and this is will stand as a big test for both teams. It may also be good game film as they may meet each other again come March.

· Valley at Centennial: Are the Hawks legit coming into 6A? We'll see how they handle a younger Valley squad.

Saturday
· Las Cruces at Volcano Vista (!): Another Top 5 matchup in the early season and it'll be the Lady Bulldawgs making the drive north to take on the defending state champions.

· Valencia at Los Alamos: Valencia could be better than expected and Los Alamos could be a sleeper waiting to steal a win from a good team.

· La Cueva at Hope Christian: We'll see what the Lady Bears can do against the Lady Huskies in yet another tough 6A test for Hope Christian.

***Please add any other games that we should watch. Also feel free to add first round games or schedules for tournaments this upcoming weekend***

Hoops: The Week that was Week Two

Hoops: The Week that was Week Two

Thanksgiving is over and the left over turkey sandwiches have been on the lunch menu for three days now.

Today, we recap the week that was week two for those of you who have yet to look at the basketball side until the end of next Saturday when we crown the 2016 football state champions.

Top 5 From Week 2

Did Work... Teams that Excelled

6A: Atrisco Heritage Academy (1-0). The Jaguars ranked outside the Top-25 (No. 35 Week 1 NMPreps.com Top-50 Rankings) opened the season at home and won in a fashion that makes you look twice at both teams. They beat No. 7 Volcano Vista (0-1) by an astonishing score of 64-48.

As Expected... Team That Won Big

6A: Albuquerque High (1-0). The Bulldogs opened the season hosting 5A Miyamura (0-1) and as expected for the 4th ranked Albuquerque High Bulldogs they won 74-46. The season is expected to be one that propels the Bulldogs to the expectation of many years as a title contender.

Living Up to the Hype... Team that Continues to Win

6A: Cleveland (2-0). The No. 6 Cleveland Storm have talent and the hype is high for the program that reached the Final Four in 2016. The Storm are off to a 2-0 start and things, even though early, could be in store for a return to the Final Four dare we say title game. The 62-51 win over No. 14 La Cueva (0-1) this week helps the case.

Shocker of the Week... Team with an Upset Win

5A: Del Norte Knights (1-0). The Del Norte Knights were not ranked in the preseason Top-50 and plenty of that reason could come to the fact that they had a new head coach hire last month. Well the Knights open the Jeron McIntosh era with a 67-52 win over No. 23 Highland High School (1-1).

Classification Shake Up... Early Takeover Win

5A: Farmington Scorpions (1-0). The Farmington Scorpions came in ranked just outside the Top-25 at No. 29. The Scorpions however could make a case for a move up this week with a win over previously ranked 25th Grants Pirates, 58-53. The win could mean the Scorpions are not going anywhere after a big season in 2015/2016 or that the Grants Pirates could be in a mini-rebuild.

Top 4 in Each Classification

The week two rankings will update on Monday afternoon but a quick look at the Top-4 for each classification in 6A and 5A as we get ready for the basketball season to kick into high gear.

6A

1. Rio Rancho (2-0). Ranked number one in both 6A and the state of New Mexico the Rio Rancho Rams start the season with a quality win over Sandia High School (0-1). The Rams beat Sandia 68-54 and then turnaround on Saturday to defeat Clovis 100-74.

2. Cibola (1-0). Well, the Cougars made believers and early indications that maybe the Valley Vikings, who was ranked 2nd last week, could be taking a step back as Cibola won 66-37 on opening night. New Mexico Highlands commit Desmond Carpenter also making a case as top guard in the state.

3. Albuquerque (1-0). As mentioned the Bulldogs opened the season with a 30-point win over Miyamura during the opening week. The Bulldogs move up from 4 to 3 with the win this week. The Bulldogs get the chance to prove their place with a Tuesday night date with 1-Rio Rancho.

4. Cleveland (2-0). The Storm move into the 4th spot with a 2-0 start to the season. The Storm opened the season in week one with a win over Alamogordo and last week they beat a quality opponent in La Cueva as mentioned above.

5A

1. Los Lunas (0-0). The Tigers have yet to play their opening game of the season. So, that means that we will keep them in the top spot by default until they are put into action.

2. Roswell (2-0). The Coyotes stay ranked 2nd in 5A basketball after they had a 57-55 win over Onate High School during week two. The Coyotes looking to continue to solidify themselves as one of the best basketball programs regardless of classification.

3. Artesia (0-0). Like Los Lunas the Artesia Bulldogs have yet to play a basketball, actually the two programs played last week in the 5A semi-finals. The Bulldogs have plenty of hype going into the season.

4. Capital (1-0). The Jaguars are a team that we have many questions about and they continue to do what they do well in head coach Ben Gomez - win. They Jaguars opened the season last week with a 17-point win over Lovington, 67-50.

Top Players from Week 2

Player Who Shined in the Spotlight... Desmond Carpenter (Cibola HS)

Four guards we know about and two of them faced off on Tuesday night of opening night for APS. Desmond Carpenter continued to live up to the hype and led the Cougars to an opening win.

Double Trouble... Juan Hurt and Clay Patterson (Rio Rancho HS)

We know about the two, that includes the 2016 NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball in Clay Patterson. Well the two guards opened the season with a win over Sandia with the two combining for 45-points.

In Conjunction with NMHSBCA Convention

Every year we host a camp during the Coaches Convention...this year it has been sized down because of new NCAA rules. This is a great opportunity to get in front of Coach Crampton who has scholarship money available and Texas Rangers Scout Josh Simpson who has contacts with college coaches all over the Four Corners area. Ideal for uncommitted seniors. Camp is limited to first 40 to register.

Week 2 - "Possession Arrow"

Possession Arrow (Key Wins for March)

Like a late game tie-up that decides who gains the last critical possession, this weekly feature will make note of key wins that may come to help a team in March in the head-to-head (“H2H”) category or potential wins against a potential district champion win (“DC”).

***Please make note the wins against a potential district champion are not any way a slight at other teams in their district. It is a just my prediction based on past performances and current overall standings***

3A Tohatchi def. 3A Laguna-Acoma [H2H/DC]
These two teams clashed in last year’s quarterfinals and again Tohatchi found themselves victorious at home against the visiting Lady Hawks, 62-44. Laguna-Acoma are DC contenders along with Cuba in a district that includes Estancia, N.A.C.A. and the new varsity squad from Cottonwood Classical Prep. We’ll wait and see if “L.A.” can even the score when they’ll host Tohatchi along with other teams for their home tournament.

6A Sandia def. 6A Rio Rancho [H2H]
Both teams are in stacked districts and it was the Lady Matadors that found themselves victorious after edging the Lady Rams, 48-47. You never know what could happen in district play for these two teams, but for now Sandia has the H2H criteria point over Rio Rancho should it come to play in March.

5A Gallup def. 5A Valencia [H2H/DC]
Both are championship contenders in their own respective districts, but the H2H win may come into play should both teams win or fail to win their district. Gallup can cover any shakeup if they can also get wins in games scheduled against Los Lunas, Belen, and Grants later this season.

6A Mayfield def. 5A Los Lunas and 5A Alamogordo [DC]
Both are good wins for Mayfield down the stretch especially with the likelihood of both being district contenders. Don’t sleep on 5A Alamogordo for a district run because they’re in a new-look 5A district with Deming, Santa Teresa, and Chaparral.

4A West Las Vegas def. 3A Eunice [DC]
Eunice is my early season favorite in 3A with the wealth of varsity returnees they have. The 47-43 win is a good for 4A West LV should Eunice win out their district against Loving and Tularosa.

6A Las Cruces def. 5A Roswell [DC]
The 39-34 win against 5A Roswell means a lot for 6A Las Cruces especially if they want a top four seed in a top-heavy 6A field.

4A Moriarty def. 4A Taos and 4A Socorro [H2H/DC]
The new 4A Lady Pintos got solid in-class wins against Taos (42-26) and Socorro (36-24). Both are contenders in their respective districts and now Moriarty sits at 3-0.

4A Robertson def. 3A Tohatchi, 66-50 [DC]
Robertson with the biggest surprise of the week in a dominant road win at 3A Tohatchi. With Navajo Prep in 4A, Tohatchi will likely run the table in district 1-3A.

6A Cibola def. 6A Valley, 45-30 [DC]
Is it a stretch to think that maybe this might actually be a H2H determining game? I don’t think so, but for Cibola getting a win against a District 4 contender helps with their March seeding. You never know what may happen in that district.

5A Los Alamos def. 4A St. Michael’s, 39-36 [DC]
That District 2-4A is loaded in both boys and girls basketball and now that St. Michael’s has joined the mix, who knows how that district will play out. West LV is the clear favorite, but with a rising Robertson and Pojoaque team not to mention dangerous Taos, it’s going to be interesting how that will play out. For now the Lady Hilltoppers can hang on to that “W”.

6A Piedra Vista def. 5A Kirtland Central, 59-54 (OT) [DC]
With PV moving up to one of the tougher districts in the state, this win against a District 1-5A opponent should help them if KC can get the district win against the likes of Bloomfield, Aztec, and Gallup.

2A Escalante def. 3A Cuba, 60-42 [DC]
Now Escalante is looking at doing something they don’t do often and that’s beat Mora for the district crown. Yes, it is early, but this win against Cuba who will likely have to contend against Laguna-Acoma is a solid win for Escalante.
