Guys at the end of December I am going to leave NMPreps. I have been here since the beginning and have loved my time with friends and new friends. I am just getting so involved with Mansfield Tiger Football with my Grandson being the QB next year as a JR and his little brother about to start 7th Grade Football next year as a Linebacker and am going to focus on Texas High School Sports. Kyle you have done an amazing job and I am so stinking proud of the product you have produced. Grine you continue to amaze with your skill as a writer and as a Stats guru. To all my friends and the 2-3 enemies thanks for the debate and thanks for many years of great fun. I just think I have out grown my time here and have started to irritate some with my talking too much about Mansfield and Texas football. Once again I love this site and I love NM Football. First round action.

Hope Christian defeated Mayfield to hand the Lady Trojans their first loss of the season. Final score was 56-45.

Up next, Cibola and Los Alamos tip off with the winner facing Hope Christian tomorrow @ 3pm. Loser to face Mayfield @ 8am.

Over/Under: Expectations Too Soon

The season is just started but through three weeks maybe the expectations have shown some color to this point on the season. Some will say it's too early to tell - truth.

Over: Centennial, Mayfield, West Las Vegas, Goddard, Highland, West Mesa

Under: Los Alamos, Aztec, Belen, St. Pius X, Atrisco Heritage Academy, Farmington

In the over group the biggest of the falls is Centennial who was ranked 13th from week 1 to 3. The Hawks are clearly in a rebuild season as they lost several to graduation and big margins of losses. Mayfield has dropped some early games. Highland a three game skid with losses to the score of 82-44, 70-35 and 67-52.

Los Alamos has our interest with a quick 4-0 start, granted no ranked wins but a win over St. Mike's is a high quality win. Aztec was terrible last season losing 27 of 28 games., we have to show some love after a 3-0 start. Farmington did lose but a close game with the top ranked Bulldogs (Albuquerque) and you take notice.

"St. Pius senior forward Tatiana Limon has been named to the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School All-American team.

Limon, who will graduate as St. Pius’ all-team leading goal scorer and point earner, had 32 goals this season for the Sartans and helped them into the Class 5A state championship game.

Limon and Cibola junior forward Lexi Baca, the Class 6A player of the year for two straight seasons and instrumental in the Cougars winning state in 2015 and 2016, both were selected to the NSCAA All-West Region Team.

Over the weekend, Albuquerque Academy senior forward Charles Touche, arguably the state’s best player, competed in the sixth annual All-American Game in Raleigh, N.C. Only 40 players were selected to participate in the game. Touche had two assists."

Cool to look at.. who else in other classifications. Who are the replacements?

This year's clinic will be this weekend in ABQ at the MCM Elegante Hotel in ABQ. It starts Friday evening at 7pm and runs all day Saturday. It's a great event that shows the commitment that the high school baseball coaches of New Mexico have to their sport and their state. Anybody can register and attend even if they aren't a high school coach.

What is your choices?

As the season has come to a close, I would like to make an appeal to all coaches to talk to their seniors about staying with the game and becoming an official. As the problems with officiating continue to grow, the number of officials continue to dwindle and as the state is growing old, the shortage is real. The outlying areas away from Albq. will get shorter next year.
For some of the graduating seniors, a great way to stay with the game and make a little extra money as they do it. Officiating isn't for everyone, but if each school had one senior that started officiating, that would give our state about 100 extra officials. In all reality its all of our responsibility to recruit.

Week 3 Recap
Wow! What a weekend of tournament hoops and double-headers! We saw more 6A prowess represented by the south, more statement wins, and a few question marks early for some teams. Here’s your weekly recap.

Opening Tip
Tournaments on tournaments on tournaments! It was the name of the game this weekend and it wasn’t without it’s drama and surprises. First up, we saw 5A Espanola Valley take Capital’s Al Armendariz tournament with a win over the host. Then we saw dominance from the Cavegirls of Carlsbad as they took the Gallup John Lomasney Invitational championship. In 4A, the Santa Fe Indian Lady Brave Classic featured the rising Robertson Lady Cardinals taking the tourney title over Navajo Prep.

In the small school tournaments we saw 2A and 1A schools get the better of their higher class counterparts. Fort Sumner/House won the Lady Lion Classic out in Santa Rosa after defeating the host in the championship as well as Tularosa and Dulce. At Melrose’s American Heritage tournament, 1A Elida claimed the title after defeating a quality Escalante team. Rounding out the small school tournaments 4A Hatch Valley won Magdalena tournament, 2A Tatum won the Dora tournament, and 2A Logan claimed the Menaul tournament.

In the midst of all these tournaments some non-tournament results do deserve attention. Mayfield defeated Cibola and Valley after a 4-game road stretch. Las Cruces moved to 4-0 after defeating Highland and Volcano Vista on the road. Highland got a W over Onate, West Mesa added another quality win with one over Los Lunas, Portales opened up their season with a win over defending 3A champ Texico, and Bloomfield got two big wins against Los Lunas and Shiprock.

Early Timeout
Gallup no longer has Coach Turner at the helm and of course graduated a number of seniors including all-state Ni’asia Mcintosh. Their early season struggles were on display when they faced off against 3A state contender Tohatchi and lost 84-75 and then lost the 3rd Place game against Cleveland where they struggled offensively. They’re definitely a different team without their interior presence. They’re 2-3 with their two win margins combining for 4 points.

Who found themselves out in open space this week?

Mayfield and Carlsbad are both 6-0 heading into another week of tournament play.
Tucumcari looked very good despite losing a first round tourney game against Tularosa.
Mesa Vista stunned Aztec for a 3rd Place win at Capital’s tournament.
Fort Sumner/House caught fire and stunned Tularosa in the Santa Rosa tournament then won it.
Bloomfield won big games against Shiprock at home and then Los Lunas on the road.
Robertson won the SFIS tournament in dominate fashion to go 5-0.

Off-The-Bench
Albuquerque Academy has started off their season 4-1 with their only loss coming against St. Michael’s by 2 points. Led by senior Sophie Long, the Chargers picked up wins against Highland, Sandia Prep, and Belen. So far, Long has carried the scoring load averaging 23.6 points per game and pulling in 7.2 rebounds per game. Alli Leggott, a senior guard, has helped pitch in 2.4 points per game while also dishing out a team leading 4.8 assist per game. The Chargers will look to continue their winning ways in their home tournament, Goddard’s tourney, and Sandia Prep’s tournament. Keep an eye on Academy.

Last week: 4A Robertson won the SFIS tourney. 2A Escalante took runner-up in Melrose tourney.

Grine on the Group: Boatwright is one of my favorite "bigs" with a soft shooting touch and could be a four at the division one level.

Cunningham is solid back to the basket big man with the attitude to take the Bulldogs to the title.

Guards are solid this year - best I've seen it. Yes, we know the year with Cullen and Bryce, two D-1 guards was phenomenal but the depth in this years backcourt will be non-stop amazing to watch.
