Week 7 Top-25 Questions

Week 7 Top-25 Questions

Each week at NMPreps.com we tackle some questions leading up to the week of games. Sometimes we hit it on the nail (week 6) most of the time we don't. Bring your own set of questions that you think will propel your team to a win in week 7.

1. Can Aaron Sanchez Remain A Viable Option?

The No. 6 Onate (4-2) came into the season with plenty of offensive question marks. Recently they have found the answer to that question in the regards to Sal Yanez, an underrated running back who has played well and consistent. However, last week the rise of quarterback Aaron Sanchez who scored several touchdowns. It was a monster high last week, with the win over Mayfield but in order to stay afloat they can't have any slip with a sneaky upset No. 20 Carlsbad (2-4) team on the road.

2. How Will Angel Trujillo Perform on the Grand Stage?

No. 2 Cleveland has found plenty of success on the ground with running backs Shawn Nieto and Nikki Papadopoulos. Those two have accounted for 13 touchdowns for the Storm. One question for the Storm is how will the quarterback handle the pressures of being attacked from every angle against one of the best defenses in New Mexico. Rio Rancho will be able to stop the running game as they stopped the solid running game of Clovis and even Onate along with a stingy Manzano team. If the Storm want to go far in November and this weekend they will have to see Angelo Trujillo become the man we projected him to be.

3. Will Manzano RB Jordan Byrd Break Loose?

No. 11 Manzano (3-2) running back Jordan Byrd entered the season with plenty of hype after a solid showing at the NMPreps.com Elite Combine and having an early offer from the University of New Mexico. However, it has yet to be seen the back we waited patiently to see and read about this season. He has had a couple breakout moments but we want a breakout game. They play No. 13 La Cueva (3-2) this week and a statement could be in store for either program. This is the chance to make known that Byrd is the real deal. He could easily get back into the discussion of top running backs in New Mexico or post season awards. La Cueva D has played well but when facing good backs - Manzano has two like Cleveland - they allowed Cleveland to score 38 early points.

4. Can Clovis Slow Down Eldorado's Cataclysm Offense?

If you still have concerns about No. 7 Eldorado (3-2), know one thing is that the Eagles can light up the scoreboard. The Eagles are averaging 41.8 points per game, having scored in the 40's in all but one contest this season. The attention is on the No. 10 Clovis Wildcats as they need to not only hope to slow the Eagles offense down but put points on the scoreboard as well. In losses this season (3-2) the Wildcats scored season lows 13 and 7. To open the season against a team that likes to score in the Eagles from Hobbs they did both things - score and slow them down - that they need to do this week against the Eldorado Eagles. They scored 46 points in that win, allowing only 10.

Top Ten Games in Week 7

No. 1 Rio Rancho at No. 2 Cleveland, Friday, 7pm.

What more could you ask for in a game during week seven as the number one ranked team takes on the number two ranked team and defending state champs.

No. 5 Artesia at No. 23 Alamogordo, Friday, 7pm.

Artesia continues to be in the headlines with their third consecutive game against a top team in the state. Alamogordo is coming in after being upset last week to Artesia district foe Goddard. A shootout could be in store for this contest.

No. 7 Eldorado at No. 10 Clovis, Friday, 7pm.

This one could be a potential district championship for an automatic bid to the 2016 state tournament. Both teams start district 2-6A play and create a match up of two Top-10 ranked teams.

No. 8 Mayfield vs No. 9 Centennial, Friday, 7pm.

All four teams from Las Cruces are ranked in the top-10 for the Week 7 NMPreps.com Fab 50. Centennial (5-1) has the opportunity against a Mayfield team that has been up and down most of the season.

No. 11 Manzano vs No. No. 13 La Cueva, Friday, 7pm.

Maybe one of the more underrated games that should have your interest this week as Manzano, who is coming off a dominating performance against previously unbeaten Piedra Vista. La Cueva maybe the best potential bubble team could make the battle for state tournament cloudy.

Bubble Team That Needs an Upset: Carlsbad hosting Onate.
Real Deal: Hot Springs at Socorro. Socorro at (6-0) has a chance to make some believers.
Battle in the SW. Silver vs Cobre. Cobre the big win last week, have chance to get this thing going.
Trio of Seed Games. Raton vs Clayton, Dexter vs Eunice and Santa Rosa at Texico. Where to rank or seed?

See the entire schedule of games. Vote the best game.

Seeding prediction, Oct. 2 (boys)

Three weeks from selection day. This prediction is not based on current district standings - instead, it's how I think things will end up. It's probably silly to even attempt this for 5A considering that district is just starting, but let's do it anyway. Please feel free to add your own comments.

6A:

1. La Cueva
2. Albuquerque
3. Hobbs
4. Cleveland
5. Sandia
6. Gadsden
7. Volcano Vista
8. Atrisco Heritage
9. Valley
10. Cibola
11. Eldorado
12. Las Cruces

Left out: Rio Rancho, Clovis, Centennial. Huge uncertainty in 6A right now, and this prediction could look completely different a week from now. Four of the top five listed above aren't even leading their districts right now, but I think they will end up at the top. Clovis is 3-1 in its district right now, but I don't even have them in the field because they still have two games with La Cueva, one with Sandia and one at Eldorado.

5A:
1. Academy
2. Roswell
3. Santa Teresa
4. Capital
5. Alamogordo
6. Valencia
7. Los Alamos
8. Chaparral
9. Farmington
10. Los Lunas
11. St. Pius
12. Goddard

Left out: Belen. You could make the case that Roswell is more likely to end up No. 1, because the Coyotes will probably coast through their district, while Academy is much more likely to stumble with remaining games against Capital, Los Alamos (2), St. Pius and Farmington. But as long as AA wins its district I think it will be No. 1, because its has a big strength-of-schedule edge over Roswell. Also, Roswell lost to Capital and tied Los Alamos, hurting its case for the top seed. The big variable is district 3, which has three good teams in Santa Teresa, Chaparral and Alamogordo but hasn't even started district play yet. In fact, if ST or Chapa goes 6-0 or 5-1 in district it will have a case to be seeded ahead of Roswell (not Alamo, who lost to Roswell twice).

Week 6: Staff Picks

GRINE'S PICKS: RECORD 37-20

Los Lunas vs Artesia

Los Lunas

For an upset pick of 800 we take the Tigers. Artesia has to be the favorite and could expose the Tiger stripes but something special is happening in the VC.

Dexter vs Estancia

Estancia

The line is close, it should be and maybe I shouldn't pick against the Demons again but in the morning I like a Bear Claw with my coffee.

Cobre vs Lordsburg

Lordsburg

The best-not-talked-about team in New Mexico is the Lordsburg Mavericks.

Capital vs Lovington

Capital

Cat fight I'm taking the team with home territory.

Mayfield vs Onate

Onate

The Knight-Trojan war. Will it be a war? Have the Knights done enough? Could be the coffee running through my veins, I guess I am saying yes.

Silver vs Ruidoso

Ruidoso

Both have the potential to be good. It's an either way pick I guess I go with the back with 4,000 career yards.

Alamogordo vs Goddard

Alamogordo

I'm a guessing man today. Alamogordo learned their lesson and have the eye set on a playoff run.

St. Pius X vs Miyamura

St. Pius

Great start by the Patriots but this Sartan should roll fairly easy. Do Sartans roll, truck or what do they do? I guess whatever the mascot does it will win becomes we do they are scary good on both ends.

Rio Rancho vs Sandia

Rio Rancho

Sandia! Okay, I am crazy not insane..I hope. I am taking the Rams but Sandia is one of the best coached teams.

Centennial vs Carlsbad

Centennial

I've taken the Cavemen too many times as an upset. (My bad CBad). I take the Hawks because it's Ocampo, the dude wins.

Piedra Vista vs Manzano

Manzano

My favorite bubble team to make the state tournament. They are my underestimated team for 2016

More Scores Around the State

Shocker: Cobre 57, Lordsburg 19. The top team in 2A, the favorite, found an upset loss to Cobre.

Business: Capitan 60, Texico. Ranked third in 3A football the Capitan Tigers show why they belong in the conversation.

The other 1 vs 2: Estancia 34, Dexter 6. Both teams are ranked in the Fab 50 from 3A football but it was Estancia who still has the keys that came out with a statement win.

19 and Counting: Los Alamos 25, Santa Fe 18. Santa Fe fought and scored, held a lead at one point but drop their 19th straight game.

Bubble Hopefully. Bloomfield 26, Valencia 24. The Bloomfield Bobcats have played two close games in consecutive weeks but hold on for a 2-point win over Valencia. A loss would have popped any bubble.

Under the Radar. Ruidoso 36, Silver 33. After trading touchdowns the entire night it was an Alex Bates touchdown on 4th down to secure the win over the Warriors.

Undefeated: Socorro 35, Albuquerque Academy 6. The number of undefeated teams is slim and the least talked about team is the 6-0 Socorro Warriors under first year head coach Andrew McCraw.

Mr. Football Race

Josh Foley, Rio Rancho: The senior from Rio Rancho High School continues to wow the crowd as he poured in more touchdowns including a 74-yard receiving touchdown. He seems to continue putting up games and big plays to have him sit alone at the top of the race.

Taylor Null, Artesia: The junior quarterback is putting himself among the top of the quarterbacks in New Mexico. He had a pair of touchdown passes in the clash between number one and number two in 5A football.

Ezekiel Tapia, Estancia. The running back had some shoes to fill coming into the season and a pair of 50 plus touchdown runs he is starting to catch steam as a name you must know. He had a 55-yard touchdown run on the night.

Key boys' games for week of Sep. 26

District play time for almost everyone now, with a few interesting non-district games sprinkled in.

Monday:
Academy (8-2-1) vs. Cibola (7-3). This is a makeup game. Academy beat Cibola handily during the first week of the season, but the Chargers are suddenly having trouble keeping teams out of the net, and Cibola is coming off an upset of Cleveland and a blowout over Piedra Vista, so expect a closer game.

Tuesday:
St. Pius (4-5) at Los Lunas (5-7). The Tigers are newly resurgent after a terrible start, and this district looks like a three-team race again (with Valencia).

Sandia (7-1-2) vs. La Cueva (8-2). Sandia was undefeated before Saturday's loss to Eldorado, but would find itself 1-2 in district with a loss here. These are probably the best two teams in Albuquerque (although Albuquerque High is in this discussion).

Moriarty (3-9) at Portales (9-0-1). I include this game only to highlight Portales, which was 4-12-1 last year but now finds itself as the last undefeated team in New Mexico. The Rams proved they are legit with a home draw against Hope Christian last week.

Wednesday:
Cibola vs. Volcano Vista (6-3-1). Every game in this district from here on out will be interesting until someone pulls away (and that may not happen).

Saturday:
Chaparral (8-3-2) at Valencia (9-2). A non-district game with state seeding implications.

Academy at Capital (9-1). These 5A heavyweights are now district rivals, and this is the district opener for both teams. At the moment, these teams are ranked No. 1 (Academy) and No. 3 (Capital) in 5A. For Capital, this game comes after a 13-day layoff - will they be sharp?

Eldorado (4-5-1) vs. La Cueva. Eldorado's upset of Sandia may have saved their state tournament hopes - can they keep pace in this district?
