Look for little mentioned and highlighted running back Devon Quiroz, Goddard who has rushed for 784-yards on the season with a recent offer from New Mexico Highlands to have a big game. Could be one that sees him be the first back to go over 1,000-yards on the season.

Small School Preview: What to Watch in Week Five

Three Must See Games

Lordsburg (3-1) vs McCurdy, Friday, 7pm: A cross classification battle with No. 1 (2A) Lordsburg taking on No. 11 (3A) McCurdy on Friday night. Lorsburg also ranked in the NMPreps.com Fab 50 Rankings at #38 will be the favorite in this contest. Two names to know in small school football will battle it out with Johnny Plowman (Lordsburg) who has an average of 246-yards per game taking on the newcomer to the board in Andres Martinez (McCurdy) who has just a little of everything for the Bobcats.

Prediction: Lordsburg 33, McCurdy 21

Santa Rosa (1-3) at Estancia (3-1), Friday, 7pm: When you think about good backs Santa Rosa was the program you read behind most top running backs. Now that title belongs to the two-time defending champion Estancia Bears as they have running back Zeke Tapia who is approaching 800-yards on the season (798) with 11 touchdowns. Santa Rosa, not as strong as it once was, but has shown fight against top opponents as they battled into the fourth quarter with Robertson.

Prediction: Estancia 30, Estancia 14

Clayton (0-3) at Capitan (3-1), Friday, 7pm (Tucumcari HS): One game that is flying under the radar this week is a 3A playoff implications game between Clayton and Capitan. Don't be fooled by an 0-3 start for Clayton as this team still has the potential to be good, they'll just need to either find better production on O or try to stop Capitan who can put points on the board. Clayton currently ranked 7th in 3A with Capitan ranked 3rd will be a battle to give us an idea where to seed/rank these teams.

Prediction: Capitan 33, Clayton 13

Playing Up: Small vs Big Schools

Dexter takes on Portales: Game could only help the case for Dexter who is ranked in the NMPreps.com Fab 50. Tall task as Portales is ranked the 26th best football team in New Mexico.

Escalante vs Albuquerque Academy: Escalante ranked 2nd in 2A football will be too much to handle for the Chargers but this could potential for an unusual upset if the 4A program beats the 2A program. Escalante also ranked in the Fab 50.

3 Impact Players this Week

Here we have five players that will be the must see type of players this week but also on the short list for Small School Player of the Year.

Zeke Tapia (Estancia): The running back has the yards but against an underrated Santa Rosa defense he'll have to be the X-factor in what could be a game into the 4th quarter.

Gabino Rodriguez (Dexter): The Great Gambino looks to show what he has against not only a top football team but against one of the top defenses this season. Rodriguez has 426-yards on the season and 5-touchdowns.

Johnny Plowman (Lordsburg): Plowman, as mentioned does it all for the Mavericks. They have a a match up McCurdy but you can bet the Plow Show dominates. He has 868-passing yards this season.

Outside the The Top-25

Best Game: Dexter vs Portales. We mentioned this yesterday in our small school preview. Portales ranked 26th and Dexter 43rd should be one to watch.

Interest Peaked: Silver vs Chaparral. Silver is ranked 40th in the Fab 50, Chaparral ended a losing streak with a win last week. Winner could use this as a pivot in the season.

Under the Radar: Gateway Christian vs Dora. Might be a reach here but the Warriors are the lone Fab 50 team in 8-man. Dora, never a team to count out. I wouldn't pick upset but worth a watch if in the area.

Go Flex: Miyamura vs Espanola Valley. The Patriots moved up in the Fab 50 (No. 31) and in the state tournament predictions. This one will (should) be over in the 3rd quarter and allows the Patriots to solidify as a Top-25 team or playoff team at 4-0.

Northern Lights: West Las Vegas vs Pojoaque Valley. By surprise the Dons of West Las Vegas are gaining steam. Pojoaque Valley had the air let out with a loss last week. How do the Dons handle being ranked in the Fab 50 for the first time?

Identity Theft: Cobre vs Aztec. Cobre enters the Fab 50 at 48th ranked. Aztec has been hanging around the 38-41 range, now at 41. This could be a game to prove who the real team is in their classifications.

Only Could Help the Cause: Bloomfield vs Hope Christian. Bloomfield is hanging on the 46th ranking in the Fab 50. Hope Christian suffered a devastating loss to Grants and fell out of the 50 this week. Bloomfield can't afford loss as they are a bubble OUT team in 5A.

Pitch counts

The NMAA is recommending the following pitch count restrictions:

• A varsity pitcher who throws between 1-40 pitches in a single day could pitch the next day.

• Between 41-60 pitches would require one calendar day of rest.

• Between 61-90 would require three calendar days of rest.

• Anything over 90 in a single game would require a rest of no fewer than four calendar days.

• A varsity pitcher cannot exceed 120 pitches in a game. If he reaches 120 during an at-bat, he will be allowed to finish that batter and then must be removed.

Some thoughts on this:

1. I personally think 120 is still too high for a high school pitcher. I would prefer to see the cap at 100.

2. It's the state tournament where we we see most arm abuse situations happen. This helps that some, but not enough. Up to now, we would see aces throw complete games (or high pitch-count games) Thursday and then come in again on Friday or Saturday (or both). That can still happen here - a pitcher could throw 60 pitches Thursday and then up to 120 on Saturday. If you want to solve that problem, you require two calendar days of rest after 41-60 pitches.

3. No more relievers pitching in both ends of a double-header. It also eliminates the temptation for a coach to bring in his game 1 starter to close out game 2.

Week Five Staff Picks

Each week of the New Mexico High School Football Season, the NMPreps.com Staff picks the weekly top prep football games. Here are Josh Grine's picks for this week.

Manzano vs Rio Rancho

Rio Rancho

This is a case when the Ram outruns, out powers the mighty King of the Jungle.

Carlsbad

The Cavemen are the underdog at 600 points. The Trojans are inconsistent. I decide to roll the dice.

Hobbs vs Centennial

Centennial

Hawks-Eagles. It is said that they Hawks is a ferocious defender of its territory.

Dexter vs Portales

Portales

Portales is the Goalith in this match up. Dexter is a beefed up David. I think this story goes to Goalith though.

Off-season coaching

Some Sandia Prep folks on Twitter are worked up on Twitter over the NMAA's June amendment to the off-season coaching rules, which seems to limit the ability of coaches to work with students that are 8th grade (and younger) in the off-season. The NMAA's stated purpose for the amendment was
that it would "emphasize multi-sport participation at the middle school level and reduce specialization." It seems to be a rule targeted at private schools, because the public schools don't have 8th-graders. Any insight on this?

Belen, even at 4-0 with a Top-25 win under their belt, looks to make the critics believers with a game against another Top-25 5A team. Both teams provide an offensive headline game as Belen averaging 47 points per game take on the Coyotes who are averaging 42 points per game. Plenty of names on the rise, who you will hear more about this second slate of the season, will provide a look into the near future as both teams could be primed for a 2017 title contending year.

Prediction: Roswell 30, Belen 24

No. 21 Moriarty (4-0) vs Capital (1-3), Friday, 7pm: The top 4A ranked Moriarty Pintos look to make it known they are in the hunt for a title with a game against a Capital team looking for answers. Moriarty is one of the little talked about offensive unit that is averaging 40 points per game behind a core of quarterback Dylan Tapia and running back Elijah Tapia. Capital who had to replace some of its offensive weapons from last season will hope to pull the upset win behind next level hopeful Jr Vargas a running back who has been known to go off, this could be another opportunity.

Prediction: Moriarty 28, Capital 20

No. 23 Robertson (4-0) vs Bernalillo (0-4), Friday, 7pm: Another Top-25 game that could be over quick or provide minutes to younger players as No. 23 Robertson will take on Bernalillo who is riding a 15-game losing streak heading into the game. Robertson is solid with weapons on offense but it's stellar defensive play has fueled it to a 4-0 start this season. Newcomer to the player of year talks is running back Joseph Paul Griego who is averaging 139 yards per game for Robertson Cardinals this season could be in store for a big outing.

Prediction: Robertson 50, Bernalillo 0

No. 25 Goddard (1-3) at Santa Fe (0-3). Friday, 7pm: The last time the Rockets traveled to the Santa Fe area they won in convincing fashion over Capital during week one. Since then they have been on a 3-game skid but this one will be a contest that could have them on the bus early. Santa Fe continues to struggle as they ride a 17-game losing streak into the contest. Look for little mentioned and highlighted running back Devon Quiroz, Goddard who has rushed for 784-yards on the season with a recent offer from New Mexico Highlands to have a big game. Could be one that sees him be the first back to go over 1,000-yards on the season.

Prediction: Goddard 50, Santa Fe 0

Who's In: State Tournament Predictions

Today, we release our weekly State Tournament Rankings. We look at how a team is playing, their current ranking and how they could potentially finish in their respected districts.

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 22ND - EVERY THURSDAY

6A
#1. Rio Rancho (Auto)
#2. Cleveland (At-Large)
#3. Las Cruces (Auto)
#4. Clovis (Auto) UP
#5. Centennial (At-Large) UP
#6. Volcano Vista (At-Large) UP
#7. Mayfield (At-Large) Down
#8. Eldorado (At-Large) Down
#9. Sandia (At-Large) UP
#10. Onate (At-Large) EVEN
#11. Piedra Vista (At-Large) UP new IN
#12. West Mesa (Auto)
Next-In: La Cueva, Manzano

Week 5 we have a mix up in our State Tournament Prediction Rankings. Most could start to disagree but we put a bigger emphasis on an unofficial piece of the criteria - District strength. Placement is on the criteria and we predict the finishes but give certain districts 4-autos, one district 1 bid and another 3 based on the district strength.

Need to Win Teams: La Cueva, Piedra Vista and Manzano: Manzano and La Cueva play in District 2-6A and this district has a big chance of only sending three teams to the State Tournament. Right now I'm predicting Clovis, Eldorado and Sandia the best three. La Cueva-Manzano will need to beat out one of those three to get in. Piedra Vista also plays into the mix if they don't take care of business this week against West Mesa. Also, the verdict is still out on Piedra Vista against the rest of District 1-6A, Cibola could play spoiler.

4 Bid Leagues: Piedra Vista Again...and Onate. We hit the topic on Piedra Vista above. They need to win, win big against West Mesa. They also have to avoid a scary game against Cibola. A loss to them could open up District 2-6A sending four to the state tournament. Onate has to finish in the Top-4 in the District 3-6A. They have the resume so far and could start to consider them Top-3 in this district if they can pull some potential upsets.

Not on the Map but Open for Business: Carlsbad. Right now the Carlsbad Cavemen are not on the bubble, not in a good way either. They are OUT team. However, they are on a two game win streak and have a game with Mayfield that folks think they have no shot at winning Well, I think they might pull an upset and this could change the entire ranking landscape with District play starting for 3-6A this week.

5A

#1. Artesia (Auto)
#2. Los Lunas (Auto)
#3. Alamogordo (Auto)
#4. Belen (At-Large) - UP
#5. St. Pius X (At-Large)
#6. Roswell (At-Large) - DOWN
#7. Goddard (At-Large)
#8. Miyamura (Auto) - UP
#9. Del Norte (Auto) - UP
#10. Farmington (Auto) - DOWN
#11. Grants (At-Large) - UP
#12. Aztec (At-Large) - UP

Bubble: Kirtland Central, Bloomfield, Santa Teresa

Four Horsemen The Byes: Belen, St. Pius X and Roswell. We could likely throw in Goddard into this conversation however we will wait because a 1-3 record is not the best argument. Belen and Roswell could shake this area up; Roswell wins, Pius could go to 4. Roswell loses we have a wait and see with a Belen-St. Pius X match up in district. Reason we gave Pius over Roswell was the recent losses in Week Four. Pius close battle with Alamo, Roswell didn't show well against Los Lunas.

After 7, It's Musical Chairs With Music We Can't Hear: Miaymura had a good showing to make us consider them as a potential DC from 1-5A. Del Norte is the next best team for an Auto from 2-5A. Farmington the better runner up right now as a prediction as they have yet to get a Dub this season. Grants, well they are 2-2 maybe playing well enough as a 4th place team from a tough 5-5A.

Bubble: Santa Teresa or maybe the young Chaparral Lobos could argue for the 12-seed. With the drop off after 7, I think it's an argument to highly consider this season. Kirtland Central, Bloomfield and Aztec will however have a better record. Depends on committee consider district placement over record or input forms. Maybe their rank.

Week Five: Who Can Pull the Upset?
Joshua J Grine

Each week we predict the games that have potential for an upset. Likely, not correct, we continue to give reason to believe that we could have another Volcano over Mayfield pick in the bag of missed choices.

Highland (0-3) vs No. 14 La Cueva (2-2): This bee might not be big enough to stink the Bear in the honey pot. This one seems to be a game that you wouldn't even consider for an upset pick. Highland however has some steam, even though the rain placed a damper on it ended the game early while up 40-26 could look for an opportunity to sting here. La Cueva has an offensive punch to their season and might be too much however Highland, even they could score 40, might have a flying chance.

No. 11 Manzano (2-1) vs No. 1 Rio Rancho (4-0): We know that this will not be a vote that you consider. I know I wouldn't with Rio Rancho playing like someone took their candy. Manzano if they want a chance need to have a great day from their front 7. Rio Rancho has the best D in the state. Manzano has a decent D. Maybe winning the offensive side of the game with backs Jordan Byrd and Xavier Saud along with ATH Roybal.

No. 22 Hobbs (1-3) vs No. 10 Centennial (3-1): The first one is sometimes the hardest especially when you get to a slow start. Hobbs offense showed up last week in a 56-0 blowout over Lovington. Even though we know Centennial is not Lovington, if Hobbs can get into an offensive showdown they could have the QB gaining confidence with his experience WR's ready to make a huge headline on Friday night.

Atrisco Heritage Academy (0-2) vs No. 5 Volcano Vista (3-1): Two weeks ago I don't think a single person would have picked Atrisco against the spread. However they played well against Top-10 ranked Onate in a 14-0 loss. This week they take on Volcano Vista (No. 5) who is flying high on cloud 9 but could a sneak Jaguar be in the bushes as this Hawk flies to low? Atrisco needs some sort of life on offensive to have any fight, without it this upset opportunity won't happen.

Capital (1-3) vs No. 21 Moriarty (4-0): The Capital Jaguars have yet to live up to the preseason hype. That is likely all forgotten right now. Moriarty is loving their new pad in 4A. Capital needs to come alive and unleash the horses on offensive if they want to pull an upset and earn a quality resume win. However, they will need to pull a lasso on the Pintos who are scoring 41 points per game on opponents including 55 on district foe Espanola Valley from 2-5A.

Chaparral (1-3) vs Silver (1-3): Neither team is ranked in the Top-25 but this could be an upset to say, "nice win". The Lobos are coming off a Fab-50 win over Gadsden, who is no longer in the Fab-50 with the loss. Could Silver become victim number two? Neither team is stellar on offensive so a defensive showdown with a power play at some point to sneak a win. We talked about Bryan Lopez (Chaparral QB) a little this summer as a surprise name that could peak. Might have the game to take a look down south in New Mexico.

Dexter (4-0) vs Portales (4-0): Dexter is the 3A school with nothing to lose. Portales, just outside the Top-25 at No. 26 would suffer in the conversation for title teams but maybe not so much to lose either. Even though both teams are (4-0), ranked high in their classification, this would be a major upset if the Demons could pull out a win.

Five Top-25 Questions for Week Five
Joshua J Grine

As we quickly approach week five of the 2016 football season we look at questions regarding teams heading into the weekend games.

1. No. 1 Rio Rancho Rams (4-0) - Keeping The Jets On High

The Rams are dominating opponents on defense. The Rams are dominating on offense. They are averaging 37.25 points per game. On defense they have only allowed 31 points, once in double figures a last minute touchdown against Onate. Can they continue this stretch an entire season? Up this week is Manzano who averages 29 points per game and coming off a shutout win. Against Top-10 Centennial they gave up 28 points so answer is likely but Manzano does have several prospects that could go off and have been known to live up to being the underdog. Two running backs over 100-yards and a QB that has rushing yards along with 257-yards passing in three games.

2. No. 2 Cleveland Storm (4-0) - Can The Offensive Keep Them Winning?

This question was brought up from a poster and has the right tune for this feature. The Rams are 7th for points given up this season. All six teams above are under .500, winless or Eldorado at (2-2). The Storm are undefeated but how much can they depend on their offense to outscore opponents alone without much stops? Next opponent up is the No. 4 Artesia Bulldogs who are averaging 46 points per game this season and have a quarterback who threw for 5-touchdowns last week. If they get into a shootout this weekend this could get intriguing, especially on the road in what could be one of the best environments this weekend for New Mexico High School football.

3. No. 21 Moriarty (4-0) - Avoiding A Let Down

Moriarty has walked to a 4-0 start this season with outcomes of 47-0, 41-0, and 55-8 along with a 20-7 win over a Fab 50 team (the only one on the schedule to date). Enter in a bruised Capital Jaguars team, ranked in the Fab 50 (#33) who is coming off a recent loss that has hurt their season. However, a question on the opposing side could be the Jaguars being able to recover from that loss. This could be the game that could rejuvenate their season and Moriarty can't afford any complacency. Capital has the chance to match toe to toe with Moriarty as both have solid running backs in Elijah Tapia (Moriarty) and Jesus Vargas (Capital). This could be considered one of the more underrated games on the weekend or Moriarty will prove they shouldn't be questioned.

4. No. 20 Roswell Coyotes (3-1) - Quick Recovery

The Roswell Coyotes started to gain momentum with a quick 3-0 start beating opponents 54-6, 58-0 and a 42-37 close game against 6A opponent. However, when they faced No. 15 Los Lunas last week they fell 49-14. In fact, two straight weeks they have allowed for the opposing quarterback to pass for a lot of yards and gave up 49-points last week. They only mustered 14-points in the loss as well well under their 42 points per game. Enter in Week Five opponent with the No. 18 Belen Eagles (4-0) who are scoring an average of 47.5 points per game. They could either redeem their place among the top teams in 5A or fall deeper into the middle tier teams.

5. No. 19 Carlsbad Cavemen (2-2) - A Statement Win

If the Cavemen ever needed a statement win it was this weekend and what better time than facing a Top-10 ranked opponent that has its own set of questions. The Cavemen, who are on a 2-game win streak, take on the No. 6 ranked Mayfield Trojans (2-2) who are coming off an upset loss last week to Volcano vista. The Cavemen have played better on offense in the past two weeks averaging 32.5 points per game. However, against Top-10 opponents (Artesia and Clovis) they only were able to average 14 points per game - both were losses. Can they score points against a Top-10 opponent? The good news is Mayfield has allowed 30 points per game this season and hasn't been stellar on offense minus a 42-point second half outburst against Eldorado.

Five Top-25 Questions for Week Five

OVERALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - TAYLOR NULL (ARTESIA HS)

Null, had a huge task this season to replace a state champion quarterback who was phenomenal on offensive. Well, five weeks in and the shoes seem to be filled with the right man for the job. In a week four win over Deming, Null threw for 5-touchdowns in the win. The Bulldogs are now ranked 4th in the state (NMPreps.com Fab 50 Rankings) and have a 4-0 record heading into week 5.

NMAA MTG 9-21-16

So it looks like the NMAA is going to move on the ability for HS coaches to work with 8th grade students during the off season. Good news for Coaches. The other big news was previously mandated by the NFHS, but will be adopted by NMAA based on member approval regarding Pitch Counts.

Kinda cool convo happened when Sally Marquez brought up last seasons SFHS boys basketball team vacating a spot in the State tourney. Her point was that what happens if say SFHS were a higher seed? Do we move everybody up and bring in a 17th team? Her stance was more along the lines of vacating the spot and giving the opponent an automatic bye.
