5 Takeaways From Week 4

5 Takeaways From Week 4

1. Rio Rancho’s Defense is just as good as their offense: The Rams have outscored opponents 149-31 through 4 weeks. Their next 4 games: Manzano, Sandia, Cleveland, and Volcano Vista. Led by NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate Josh Foley at Running Back their offense has been getting the hype, but their defense is scary good, in fact they allowed -30 rushing yards against Clovis two weeks ago.

2. Cleveland has no defense, but has plenty of offense: The Storm have now won 17 games in a row. Their offense is scoring 40.0 points per game, 38 against La Cueva, 49 against Las Cruces, and 49 against Centennial. Next week Cleveland travels to face Artesia. Better find some defensive backs quickly.

3. Artesia has now won their last 28 out of 30 games: Dating back to the 2014 season, no one has been able to stop Artesia. Hobbs beat them in 2014 and their last loss came against Las Cruces in October of 2015. The Bulldogs are scoring 46.0 points per game, in their last two games The Bulldogs have outscored the comp: 98-6.

4. Los Lunas and Belen look mighty potent: Los Lunas looked like the real deal outscoring opponents 203-83 (50.7-20.5 Average). Their wins over Alamogordo and Roswell really jump out, they buried the Coyotes Friday Night 49-14. Remember Los Lunas has two D1 players on their team in Michigan Commit O’marry Samuels and New Mexico State Commit Trevor Brohard. While no one is really talking about Belen, the Eagles under first year Head Coach Greg Hennington are 4-0 after beating Rio Grande Friday Night 49-0. The Eagles are scoring 47.5 points per game. Belen and Los Lunas play for the Chile Roaster on October 14th, mark your calendar.

5. Moriarty likely new No. 1 in Class 4A: The Moriarty Pintos led by Head Coach Joe Anaya are steamrolling the comp outscoring opponents 163-15. They beat Bernalillo 47-0, beat Los Alamos 41-0, beat St. Mike’s 20-7, and beat Espanola Friday Night 55-8. Hatch might have something to say about that later in the year, but Benson, Arizona put it on the Bears in week 4 48-21. Also don’t discount Portales from the 4A mix, the Rams rolled St. Michael’s 41-13, and of course the Robertson Cardinals are your yearly 4A staple, in week 4 they beat Ruidoso 47-14.

Extra Point

3A/2A Quick Hit, Estancia the clear favorite again: Did you know Estancia is 27-4 since the 2014 season under Head Coach Stewart Burnett? The Bears moved to 3-1 on the year beat Capitan last night 20-14, next up is Santa Rosa and Dexter, two very good challenges. The Dexter Demons are rolling now at 4-0 under Head Coach Kevin Graham, outscoring the comp 132-12, they beat Tucumcari last night 56-6. The sleeper in 3A is Eunice with a 2-2 record, they beat Texico last night 19-6, but also lost in week 2 to Estancia 50-28. In Class 2A: Escalante is now 4-0 and 27-1 under Head Coach Dusty Giles since the 2014 season. This year the Lobos have beaten Espanola and Pojoaque, go figure. Ft. Sumner is 4-0 after beating Hagerman 60-21 Friday Night, Ft. Sumner also beat Santa Rosa early this year 31-6. Lordsburg now in 2A is 3-1 after a 14-0 win over Hot Springs, watch for quarterback Johnny Plowman who might be the best player in all of 2A and maybe even 3A.

Week Five: Who Can Pull the Upset?
Joshua J Grine

Each week we predict the games that have potential for an upset. Likely, not correct, we continue to give reason to believe that we could have another Volcano over Mayfield pick in the bag of missed choices.

Highland (0-3) vs No. 14 La Cueva (2-2): This bee might not be big enough to stink the Bear in the honey pot. This one seems to be a game that you wouldn't even consider for an upset pick. Highland however has some steam, even though the rain placed a damper on it ended the game early while up 40-26 could look for an opportunity to sting here. La Cueva has an offensive punch to their season and might be too much however Highland, even they could score 40, might have a flying chance.

No. 11 Manzano (2-1) vs No. 1 Rio Rancho (4-0): We know that this will not be a vote that you consider. I know I wouldn't with Rio Rancho playing like someone took their candy. Manzano if they want a chance need to have a great day from their front 7. Rio Rancho has the best D in the state. Manzano has a decent D. Maybe winning the offensive side of the game with backs Jordan Byrd and Xavier Saud along with ATH Roybal.

No. 22 Hobbs (1-3) vs No. 10 Centennial (3-1): The first one is sometimes the hardest especially when you get to a slow start. Hobbs offense showed up last week in a 56-0 blowout over Lovington. Even though we know Centennial is not Lovington, if Hobbs can get into an offensive showdown they could have the QB gaining confidence with his experience WR's ready to make a huge headline on Friday night.

Atrisco Heritage Academy (0-2) vs No. 5 Volcano Vista (3-1): Two weeks ago I don't think a single person would have picked Atrisco against the spread. However they played well against Top-10 ranked Onate in a 14-0 loss. This week they take on Volcano Vista (No. 5) who is flying high on cloud 9 but could a sneak Jaguar be in the bushes as this Hawk flies to low? Atrisco needs some sort of life on offensive to have any fight, without it this upset opportunity won't happen.

Capital (1-3) vs No. 21 Moriarty (4-0): The Capital Jaguars have yet to live up to the preseason hype. That is likely all forgotten right now. Moriarty is loving their new pad in 4A. Capital needs to come alive and unleash the horses on offensive if they want to pull an upset and earn a quality resume win. However, they will need to pull a lasso on the Pintos who are scoring 41 points per game on opponents including 55 on district foe Espanola Valley from 2-5A.

Chaparral (1-3) vs Silver (1-3): Neither team is ranked in the Top-25 but this could be an upset to say, "nice win". The Lobos are coming off a Fab-50 win over Gadsden, who is no longer in the Fab-50 with the loss. Could Silver become victim number two? Neither team is stellar on offensive so a defensive showdown with a power play at some point to sneak a win. We talked about Bryan Lopez (Chaparral QB) a little this summer as a surprise name that could peak. Might have the game to take a look down south in New Mexico.

Dexter (4-0) vs Portales (4-0): Dexter is the 3A school with nothing to lose. Portales, just outside the Top-25 at No. 26 would suffer in the conversation for title teams but maybe not so much to lose either. Even though both teams are (4-0), ranked high in their classification, this would be a major upset if the Demons could pull out a win.

The CORE Concept and Construction Videos

The CORE (The Center Of Recreational Excellence) in Hobbs is now under construction and two videos are available. Please go to hobbsnm.org to view. This amazing facility will be one of the finest indoor public recreation complexes in the entire nation. It is the result of an unheard public and private funding alliance of six entities. They are the City of Hobbs, the Maddox Foundation, New Mexico Junior College, Hobbs Schools, Lea County and the University of the Southwest. Again, special thanks to Maddox for donating $25 Million as their part of this development. This facility will be along side of the $9 Million jogging/health trail which Maddox also provided most of the funds for. That lighted trail has thousands of trees and bushes and many miles of lush lawn. The Core is located just before the Zia Park Hotel, Casino & Racetrack and across the street from the Lea County Event Center which is attached to NMJC.

Some of the major attractions of The CORE include multiple aquatic facilities. There is a spectacular NCAA rated competition swimming/diving pool where events can be watched from multiple levels. NMJC and USW are expected to create swimming and diving teams and HHS will also use this facility. There will also be other pools with one having several gigantic water slides. One will be the highest water slide in NM. There will also be an indoor soccer center which all schools will be able to use. These are just a few of many recreational facilities that will be inside this enormous facility. If you watch the video, there will be a short pause in between the two presentations. The facility will require about two years to build and is the largest current public works project in NM and the largest within a 500 mile radius of Hobbs. Special thanks to all that worked so hard getting this to come to pass. I am sure that getting cooperation and consensus from so many alpha type personalities heading all of these entities was not easy.

Week Four: What Did We Learn

Week Four: What Did We Learn
Joshua J Grine

Today, we take a look at the week that was as we rewind the previous week of the New Mexico High School football season.

One Seeds After Week 4

6A: Rio Rancho (1). The Rams look unstoppable, in fact, the Rams have been unstoppable as they not only win big again they do it against another Top-10. They have taken out Mayfield, Onate and Clovis only four weeks into the season. Remember when we said be case scenario was 12-0? Is anyone still doubting us?

5A: Artesia (1). Something about the color orange in 5A football season. Los Lunas is trailing the Bulldogs right now and the distance looks further than you would expect between one and two the way they are playing. Los Lunas however will look to make a statement we will just have to wait until December. For now the two-time defending champs are the 1-seed. Any disagreement?

4A: Moriarty (1). We all knew the Moriarty Pintos who played in the 5A Final Four last season would have success in 4A. Did we think that they would be this good? Maybe not. The Pintos however continue to be backing up the talk of being the 1-seed in 4A. No movement in that discussion this week.

Next In Line: The Two Seeds

6A: Cleveland (2). When we put out our NMPreps.com State Tournament Rankings the Storm will stay at two, even with the potential as an At-Large as the two seed. Has that happened? Well the argument has to stay the same, unless they get completely blown out in the showdown with crosstown rival Rio Rancho.

5A: Los Lunas (2). We mentioned them above, they were the 2-seed in our Week 4 State Tournament Rankings. So this is to no surprise here. However, this 2-seed is scary good and they have proven it, in somewhat of an underrated way. Ranked 15th in the state, the Tigers could, maybe should, start to make the climb up and into the Top-10 soon.

4A: Robertson (2). The only movement that we have in Big School football Fab-50 rankings is the Robertson Cardinals taking over the 2-slot from the defending champion Hatch Valley Bears. Does that mean we predict the Cardinals the better of the two. Well, nobody can truly say yes or no and be sold 100%. Hatch Valley was beaten by Benson, Arizona but that should be no indication as Benson a defending champion in Arizona could be a handful of Fab-50 teams. For now the Cardinals move up after dominating Ruidoso 47-14 in week four.

Mr. Football Candidates | Names to Consider

Taylor Null (Artesia). Null continues to impress this season with another outing of 5-touchdowns thrown in week four. He started the night with a 52-yard touchdown pass to Chaney Hardt. Null, has been hitting on target better than most quarterbacks this season. Movement: UP

Chris Streetz (Volcano Vista). New name to the short list is Streetz and even more surprising is the fact that Streetz was out a majority of the second half of the Hawks upset win in week three. The young man was running like a grown man in week three.

Drew Ortiz (St. Pius X). Yes, the Sartans took a loss this week but Ortiz is hands down one of the top players in the state. Even in a loss Ortiz was lighting up the stat sheet and proving that he is one to consider when we sit down and make the decision of Top Overall Player in New Mexico.

Shane Cooper & Cade Hackey (Hatch Valley). It would have been impossible to mentioned one without the other and this is a special case. Cooper, playing against a tough Benson team threw for 245-yards, 3 touchdowns along with 8-tackles. Hackey, 7-catches for 133-yards, a TD and 10 tackles in the contest.

Nick Gaerlan (Los Lunas). The youngin' to top the list of candidates that we will consider late into the season. He throws 4-touchdowns against a Top-25 team. Gaerlan is starting to see his name hit the headlines and he continues to back it up each week.

Rapid Fire

Coach Eats Free: Chad Wallin (Volcano Vista). Huge win this week, the Hawks now looking like a contender.

Reserved Parking: W. Shark (Miyamura). Last week a bubble 5A team, this week an IN as they dominate Capital, 40-6.

Vote for School President: Dee Smith (Alamogordo). The young man hit the spotlight last week, maybe next week Mr. Football Candidate.

Going the Distance: Brett Money (Alamogordo). We couldn't leave the kicker off the feature, he hit a 38-yard FG in the game.

Roll Call: Onate Kicker. It was mentioned that he hit a 46-yard FG. Fact or fiction? Does he have a name or just Onate kicker?

Pick and Flick: Dominic Madrid gets a 62-yard Pick-6 in the game for Artesia.

She Has Game: Rebekah Nez of La Cueva hits an extra point for the score.

50/50: Elijah Tapia (Moriarty). The RB is quietly catching our radar. He ran a 51-yard touchdown.

Leftovers are Gone: Cailon Bailon. Had a fumble recovery of 93-yards in the game.

Missed Ya: I'll run another feature on Tuesday/late Monday if you feel we missed a player or stat line. Maybe, a player (that you provide stats with) who should be added to our Mr. Football candidates.

Better Late Than Never. Go Start the Bus

Sorry about missing out on this last Friday but was indisposed at the hospital with my son. Would be remiss if I didn't keep up and give kudos to those bus drivers;)
All trips round trip..not enough Allsup's on some.

10. Valley at Las Cruces and Mayfield at Volcano Vista 443 miles
9. St. Mikes at Portales 444 miles
8. Los Lunas at Roswell 445 miles
7. McCudy vs Tularosa 462 Miles
6. Cleveland vs Centennial 476 miles
5. Onate vs Rio Rancho 480 Miles
4. Carlsbd to Cibola 560 miles
3.Deming at Artesia 588 miles
2. Lake Arthur at Animas 672 miles or 30 trips to Artesia and Back
1. Raton vs Wingate 713 miles about the same distance as Albq. to Houston Texas, except you can fly lolo_O:eek:

Question...

Are there not NMAA rules which prevent players from school jumping? For instance, a player thinks he should be the starter on a varsity team and is not so he transfers to another local school where he will have a better chance of starting. Neither school is actually in the student/ athletes home address district. I was under the impression that they had to sit out for 1 calendar year to play varsity. Am I mistaken?
