Quarterback Review And Highlights

Quarterback Review

Aaron Sanchez - Onate - Had a good showing at quarterback and liked his feet during individual drills. Had a broad jump of 8-feet-7 inches.

Angelo Trujillo - Cleveland - 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, one of the top overall quarterbacks at the event and trust us, Cleveland isn't going to take much of a drop off following Gabe Ortega. Trujillo has a cannon, throws well on the run, leader, etc.

Andru Sanchez - Cobre - Had a big year for Cobre as a junior in 2015, ran a shuttle of 4.5, broad of 8-feet-1

Antonio A. Gonzales - Centennial - Younger quarterback from Centennial that had some great footwork. 10 reps of 185 pounds and had a broad of 8-feet-7.

Arjay Ortiz - Robertson - 6-foot-0, 154 QB that killed it last year for the Cardinals. Also a very good defensive back, made some good throws.

Blake Moore - Hobbs - Not sure if he'll be the starter in 2017, but Moore is just a super athletic prospect from Hobbs that can play WR or DB.

Brook Quinones - Lovington - 5-foot-11, 157 pounds and will make a push for the Wildcat's starting position at quarterback. Very athletic, 8-feet-0 broad, and good footwork.

Chris Campbell - La Cueva - At 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, Campbell has tremendously improved year over year, looks like a next level guy, had a shuttle of 4.3 and a broad of 9-feet-2. Should be one of the best QB's La Cueva has had in years.

Dillon Gassoway - Volcano Vista - 6-foot-0, 200 pound quarterback that will take over for the Hawks replacing three year starter Josh Williams. Really have liked him all summer long. 16 reps of 185 pounds and a broad jump of 8-feet-7 1/2 inches.

Drew Ortiz - St. Pius X - 5-foot-10, 185 pounds - One of the top quarterbacks at the event, great footwork and just overall really polished. 16 reps of 185 pounds, 4.65 40-time, 4.28 shuttle, and 8-feet-7 inch broad.

Dylan Tapia - Moriarty - Athletic quarterback that ran a 4.22 shuttle time and a broad of 8-feet-6 inches

Gavin Hardison - Hobbs - Knew the 6-foot-2, 170 pound Class of 2018 prospect could sling it, but was blown away just how good he is. Great release, can throw on the run, powerful arm. Great looking quarterback.

Gannon Chavez - Cibola - The 6-foot-0, 170 pound quarterback returns for his senior year at Cibola and has a ton of experience. He had an impressive broad jump of 8-feet-3 and was throwing bee bees to the receivers during the evening. Don't sleep on the Cougars this year.

Joe Hanson-Rivera - Silver - Didn't know much about Hanson-River going in, but he had some great numbers. At 5-foot-11 and 177 pounds he ran a 4.66 40-time, 4.4 shuttle, and had a broad jump of 8-feet-1 inch.

Kaleb Hatch - Franklin - For a second year in a row the 6-foot-3, 190 pound pocket passer from Franklin won the overall QB Award. Great zip on the ball, leader, college level guy. Had a broad of 9-feet, 10 reps of 185 pounds

Kyle Hooper - Alamogordo - A+ arm strength, one of the best deep balls at the event, wants to win. 6-foot-3 1/2, 175 pounds with a 9-foot-0 1/2 broad jump. Next level guy.

Matt Chavez - Miyamura - Tough kid at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds he had 8 reps of 185 pounds and a shuttle of 4.44. The Patriots always seem to have a few good athletes.

Nick Padilla - Moriarty - Another athletic quarterback for Moriarty to choose from. He had a broad of 8-feet-1, but looks like he can run well which bodes well for the Pintos.

Price Bowen - Capitan - Listed as a QB, RB, and a TE Bowen is 5-foot-7 and 160 pounds, had a broad jump of
9-feet-0

Sebastioan Roanhaus - Clovis - 6-foot-0, 185 pound quarterback that really impressed during the throwing period, shuttle time of 4.58 and a broad jump of 8-feet-1 1/2 inches.

Belen/Los Lunas 7 on 7

I watched these 2 teams on Wednesday. They both have very good skill people. I was impressed with how well they both were able to execute this early in the season. Both teams have great coaching and both are going to give Pius some serious challenges.
I personally did not keep score but I was told that Belen scored 7 times and LL scored 4 times. Its going to be a great game when they meet all padded up for reals. Good luck to all 3 Valencia County teams during this upcoming season.

2018 Breakthrough Quarterbacks

2018 Breakthrough Quarterbacks
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

The 2016 season is closing in and today we look at a few quarterbacks who have been on the radar but could be ready to live up to the stardom that comes with QB-One.

1. Angelo Trujillo, QB, Cleveland High School
5-foot-11, 180 pounds

Trujillo has added hype and a standard to live up too in Cleveland. The junior quarterback has a long list of top notch quarterbacks that he has to live up too, with two Mr. Football winners wearing the Electric blue on Friday nights. However, if you seen the young fella you will quickly have an answer to any doubt. The kid is unreal and will do very well this season.

2. Torri Locklin, QB, Mayfield HighSchool
6-foot-3, 185 pounds

Locklin and Trujillo have been mentioned before on our Top 6A quarterbacks in New Mexico. We could leave them off here though as they are only ready to break-in. Locklin, has great size and will be one prospect you see continuing to rise through the prospect rankings. Already being recruited at the next level by division one New Mexico State University, be ready to see the name a lot this coming season.

3. Taylor Null, QB, Artesia High School
6-foot-3, 170 pounds

Null, has the most pressure of any quarterback on this list and maybe state. He takes the snaps as THE quarterback for the two-time defending state champion Artesia Bulldogs. He received experience last season passing for 958-yards and 7-touchdowns. He is the top ranked QB in 2018 for 5A football and by seasons end I think he not only lives up to the pressure, he does dominates it.

4. Cameron Stevenson, QB, Goddard High School
6-foot-1, 188 pounds

The Rockets QB had 17 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing touchdowns but this could be a wait and see prospect, like others on the list. The anticipation awaits as the Rockets will again have another head coach calling the shots and the progression only awaits for the Rockets.

5. Bryson Dowdy, QB, Kirtland Central High School
6-foot-3, 180 pounds

The year to produce is now for Dowdy as the Broncos move UP into 5A football and the three sport stud could be in-store for the breakthrough and breakout year that we anticipate. Last years numbers read - 1,081-passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns and 180-rushing yards.

6. Arjay Ortiz, QB, Robertson High School
6-foot-1, 150 pounds

Ortiz, will get passed over by many but the 6-foot-1 quarterback will be one of the top prospects to watch in 4A football this season. Ortiz put up huge numbers last season passing for 985-yards with 12 touchdowns but also rushed for 540-yards and 9-touchdowns. He was a prospect I was hoping to see tomorrow to see how he fares with other QB's from this class.

7. Cody Smith, QB, Aztec High School
6-foot-2, 190 pounds

Smith, could be higher on the list and likely will have the opportunity to prove his stock as he will face a quality list of opponents. He passed for 2,841-yards as a sophomore along with 25-passing touchdowns. The numbers are there and now to not have a slump season but if history tells us anything Aztec quarterbacks only get better.

8. Dakota Halliburton, QB, Navajo Prep School
6-foot, 177 pounds

He lead all quarterbacks from 2018 in passing yards with 2,846-yards last season with 27-passing touchdowns. The question we now have is will he get to air the ball 302 attempts under a new head coach? We know that he will play well this season but the other question is the adjustment to 4A football from 3A, good news is the schedule won't be too difficult.

Wait and See

9. Gavin Hardison, QB, Hobbs
10. Thomas Wisneski, QB, Belen: Passed for 553-yards.
11. Dustin Segura, QB, Raton: Passed for 994-yards
12. Antonio Gabaldon, QB, St. Mikes
