Grine: Unsigned Prospects That Need To Player College Basketball

Today, I take a list of players that are unsigned at the moment and I still don't know why they are left on the board.

1. Johnny McCants, F, Onate HS
Level: Division-1/JUCO
Skinny: It's unknown why McCants is on the board still. There are rumors floating on why but nothing said at this moment. Surely the only division one basketball talent at the moment so it's a bit hard to see him unsigned still or uncommitted.

2. Holt Shelley, F, Cliff HS
Level: JC/D2/NAIA
Skinny: The biggest diamond in the rough in the state is Shelley. How any team (ESPECIALLY WESTERN NM) could pass on him seems insane. If you seen him warm up his range goes well beyond the three point line, powerful off the block and can dribble. Oh yeah could be a 6'8 wing at the college level.

3. Richie Lucero, W, Grants HS
Level: JUCO/D-2/NAIA
Skinny: Another prospect that it's strange to see on the board still. A lefty wing that can penetrate, shoot and has basketball instinct. Could spend time at a JC and who knows be like Jacob Holland as a D-1 signee after a year or two at the JC level.

4. Daniel Amador, W, Roswell HS
Level: D2/NAIA
Skinny: Much like many on this list he could head the JC route or D2 route but Amador is a player who should be playing someplace next season. If I'm NMMI or Eastern, especially Western I take him.

5. Eric Coca, G, Capital HS
Level: D2/NAIA
Skinny: Any D2 team in the state or surrounding state would get a steal in Coca. Also, a JC in the surrounding area might take a look at him and who knows what he could develop into.

Starting Five: 5 Unknown Breakout Players For 2016-2017

Unknown Breakout Players For 2016-2017
Joshua J Grine

Today, we take a look around the state for players who had successful seasons but maybe a bit under the radar. Sometimes it happens from lack of information or a team that was sub-pair.

What we are looking for is players who could see their stock rise the most. Known but seldom making the list of Top Players for the week.

Ten Players To Keep An Eye On

Cael Apodaca - Highland HS - 2017

It has been a couple years since the Hornets had a really talented stretch-four. Well, Apodaca a senior to be ranked #93 on the NMPreps.com Top 100 Player Rankings might be one of the biggest jumps in rankings depending on how the Hornets play next season.

Chris Mesquita - Roswell HS - 2017

Most that follow the state of New Mexico knew the Coyotes go-to player Daniel Amador. Well, this season the Coyotes will be in search of the new go-to player. They could have a pair in Garrett Smothermon, who we liked this post season or in Mesquita.

Kevin Medrano - Gadsden HS - 2017

The Panthers lose a majority of their scoring and Medrano is the returning stud to look out for. From what we seen, he is a solid prospect. Decent size, can go inside or outside. The revolving door for the head coach spot affected this team and some stability built around him next season is necessary.

Mario Archuleta - Pecos HS - 2018

Unless you follow the small school division you won't be too familiar with Archuleta. The top scoring guard for 3A Pecos could be a high rising name in this classification next season.

Braden Fraze - Texico HS - 2017

Could be looking for a repeat as Fraze an All- NMPreps.com 3A Team member will be one to watch. Size, can shoot and overall a basketball-athlete. Keep an eye out for the name.

More: 6A-1A Awards | Coach of the Year

2016 All-NMPreps.com Team

Clay Patterson, Rio Rancho HS (2017)

The junior was outstanding the entire season, finishing it with a state championship. Patterson, was also awarded the 6A Player of the Year Award.

Johnny McCants, Onate HS (2016)

The senior had a stellar senior season filled with highlight dunks, double-doubles and a 1-seed in the state tournament along with a Final Four appearance.

Daniel Amador, Roswell HS (2016)

The senior wing for the Coyotes did a little bit of everything for the Coyotes and was known for throwing down a jam from time to time. Amador was a special talent had several games of 40 points or more.

Brenden Boatwright, Carlsbad HS (2017)

It would be difficult to leave off a player who averaged a double-double on a nightly bases. Boatwright, a prospect to keep a close eye on for next season.

Eric Coca, Capital HS (2016)

Coca, was a sound floor general this season and was a player that you love to have as a coach. He can shoot, understands the game and is a clear extension of the coach.

Cesar Molina, Centennial (2016)

Right now the only committed prospect in the state of New Mexico, Molina much like Coca did whatever he needed to get his team a win. Molina, was a great defender, could shoot with the best of them and would take you off the dribble.

Jordan Leake, Hope Christian (2016)

Leake was a huge part of the Huskies reaching and winning their fourth straight title. Leake, the NMPreps.com 4A Player of the Year is one of the most underrated prospects in New Mexico right now.

DJ Bustos, West Las Vegas (2017)

Bustos, was the type of player that could go for 50 points on any given night (and did). Bustos, led the Dons to back-to-back state championship games and a clear favorite to return next season.

John Paul Garcia, Tucumcari HS (2016)

The sweet shooting guard from Tucumcari High School, guided them to the title game this season. At, 22.8 points per game and 6 rebounds along with 5 assists he took home the 3A Player of the Year award.

Holt Shelley, Cliff HS (2016)

Shelley, likely one of the best - little mentioned - prospect in the state of New Mexico. The 6'8 stud went for 22 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists per night along with 4.5 blocks per game. Shelley, was also the NMPreps.com 1A Player of the Year this season.

Cade Barnard, Melrose HS (2018)

Likely, the youngest player to make the All-NMPreps.com Team, Barnard the sophomore for the Buffaloes was also the NMPreps.com 2A Player of the Year this season.

Marcus Williams, Cleveland HS (2016)

The two-sport stud and All-NMPreps.com Team player Marcus Williams of the Cleveland Storm. Williams, was as good as it gets and leaves Cleveland High School with some records this season.
