La Cueva Football Players Suspended

From KOAT

Six La Cueva High School football players are suspended and one assistant coach is on leave after the district said there was some sort of boxing match in the locker room.

It allegedly happened during their first period football class just before spring break.

Several parents claim the coach ordered the kids to put on gloves and box each other. They said they were even more disgusted to learn the coach stood there cheering the kids on.

Colleges Can Now Pay For Round Trip Costs For Parents

Per ESPN Report

The ruling to ban satellite camps has dominated the headlines in past weeks, but there is another rule that recently passed that will have a big impact on the NCAA and recruiting.

Proposal 2015-52 will allow institutions to pay the actual round-trip costs for a prospective student-athlete's parents or legal guardians to accompany the prospect on his official visit and will be implemented August 1, 2016.

Top Prospect Report: Class of 2019
Joshua J. Grine

Today, we take a look at the impact freshmen who have played well this season. Not many on the radar but a few impact freshmen who could have great careers before their time is over.

More: Top Players in 2018 | Top Players in 2017 | Top Players in 2016

1. Kameron Valencia, G, 6'2'' Eldorado HS

The Eldorado Eagles season has a pair of bright story lines. One is the 50-foot buzzer beater over ranked Hobbs. The second is in terms of the future. Valencia, is ranked number one on our countdown of top freshmen in the state of New Mexico. Valencia, hasn't seen much, if any, minutes this season but late this district season Valencia finally got the call. He poured in double-digits in points and his high basketball IQ was on display. Remember the name because he would start on a handful of programs.

2. Zanen Zeller, PG, 6'1'', Los Lunas HS

The last time we had two freshmen this good and with basketball IQs that could rank among the best in the state of New Mexico. Zeller, has a leg up as he is the son of one of the best girls basketball head coaches in New Mexico in Los Lunas' coach Marty Zeller. The 6'1'' point guard could be ranked among the Top 100 overall players regardless of classification. He sees the floor well, makes good decisions with the ball and could become a scoring point guard in the future.

3. DeAnte Bernard, G, 6'1'', Highland HS

DeAnte could become a special player in a few years but is part of the three top players in the state of New Mexico from the 2019 class with Valencia and Zeller. Had a breakout game early on this season with a 17 point performance. Will have to put work in to stay among the top players in the state. Averaging 4.1 points per game on the season in 16 contests.

On the Radar

Rakim Stokes, 6'4'', F, Alamogordo High School
Jolante Gray, Volcano Vista HS
Dakota Powell, G, 6'0'' Manzano HS

2016 MLS Schedule

The 2016 MLS schedule got released to much fanfare....bit of sarcasm.

It's always hard to judge a "favorite" with all the signings, draft picks, DP's, etc. Plus this year four of the bigger teams are playing in the CONCACAF Champions League which no MLS team has won before. They have been close with 2 runners up.

I get excited for the league to start by mid February.

Leo Messi....G.O.A.T.?

He wins his FIFTH Ballon d'Or this year. He will always be compared to the likes of the legendary Pele & Maradona. He will always be compared to his contemporary Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has done some amazing things like score over 100 goals in a single calendar year, multiple titles for club in the league and in Europe.

Yet, the one that eludes him is the World Cup. Will he go down as the G.O.A.T or will fans/journalists/etc deny him that honor without a World Cup? Can he even be considered the G.O.A.T without it?

Lots of things to talk about.....

Its been quiet on here so lets see how these new topics perform:

1) What are some thoughts on the current standing of Jurgen Klinsman and the USMNT program from the top down? It was a rather drab week with the loss in Guatemala, then the win in Columbus mixed with the U23's missing the Olympics for the 2nd consecutive cycle.
We have the Copa America Centenario coming up....will Klinsman survive that or even get there with his job?

2) The USWNT have filed suit against the USSF seeking equal/fair pay and treatment. Quickly glancing over a bunch of the articles...it looks like they have a strong case. Plus, the USSF sued the women for even bringing a lawsuit against them! This whole web of suit and countersuit is just gonna drag this on for awhile.

Combined those two big stories are not something that bring much positive light on the state of soccer/football in the US.

Miles Hilton - St. Pius X - Commits

Miles has signed with Cochise JC. Very tough decision to make. Had lots of Football and Baseball JC offers on the table. He worked his tail off year around to get these opportunities. Not easy being a 2 sport athlete these days with all the specialization.

Career at Pius: Football
4-year letterman
Broke and set 4 All-Time records at WR in school's 60yr history
1st Team All-Metro 6A/5A
2nd Team All-State
North/South All-Star 6A/5A

Baseball:
4-year letterman
1st Team All-District as a Sophomore, Junior, & Senior at Utility
2nd Team All-State Utility as a Sophomore
1st Team All-State Utility & DH as a Junior
Senior Year - In Progress

I wanted to especially thank Kyle Henderson who has been awesome in not only getting my son recognized but all the kids that play and excel in NM high school sports. I also want to thank some on here who have advocated, believed, and helped Miles in his journey to succeed and get the chance of living the dream.

Top Returning Point Guards To Watch in 2016-2017

Top Returning Point Guards To Watch in 2016-2017
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

More Player Rankings: Top 100 | Top Classification Rankings

Today, we take a look at the returning point guards in the state of New Mexico. The field is loaded with top guards and could be one of the top talented groups.

Top Point Guards

Juan Hurt - Rio Rancho - 2017 - Only a junior last season and more of a scoring point guard, Hurt does not shy from a role of distributing the ball when the team needs it. Also, you can find him with the ball when they need to pull it out and run the O.

Zanen Zeller - Los Lunas - 2019 - The offensive could look for him more to run the offense next season with the amount of depth he brings to the table. At, 6'1 (and only growing) Zeller could be a true point guard to watch and by his senior year the best out.

Ismael Holguin - Mayfield - 2017 - Another junior, one we didn't get to see this post season, but one that will be to keep an eye on. This program is on the rise and Holguin is one to watch. Will likely be seen as a 10 point/5 assist per game PG.

Tristan McCarty - La Cueva - 2017 - It's hard not to like McCarty, a no nonsense point guard with solid passing abilities but will get into the paint and hit jumpers. La Cueva will only get better and McCarty will only see his numbers and minutes improve.

Anthony Chavez - Valley - 2018 - We have seen and heard the name of Chavez. The Vikings will likely be an early favorite and if you are looking for a 15 point/10 assist possibility, he is your man.

Markus Collins - Las Cruces - 2018 - The Bulldawgs will be a team to watch next season and Collins is a fun one to watch. He can run the O but also drop 20 in a game.

Jayden Phillips - Cleveland - 2018 - The Storm will be looking for it's new go-to player. Phillips is the man to watch for the Storm as the veteran leader.
