6A BASKETBALL
1st Quadrant
#1. Onate
#8. Hobbs
#9. Sandia
#16. Eldorado
Quadrant Overview:
Onate is the number one ranked team and have the number one player in the state in Johnny McCants. Hobbs and Sandia is an evenly matched game but Sandia is trending in the right direction and will create issues for all four teams in the quadrant as 6-9 Caleb Wroten, Sandia could be a difficult match up.
Final Four Pick:
Onate
Best Player:
Johnny McCants (Onate)
5 Other Top 5:
Caleb Wroten (Sandia), Pierre Swain (Hobbs), Jordaan Gonzales (Hobbs), Bobby Tapia (Sandia), Hunter Thomas (Onate)
Onate vs Eldorado, Sat:
The switch two days ago as Eldorado is the first 17 seed to make the state tournament. This one will be a battle as the Eldorado Eagles have a big man in Bryce Wade and will have bigger guards to play defense against Onate guards. Onate overall too much punch in this contest with underrated depth.
Backcourt: Onate
Frontcourt: Onate
Offense: Onate
Defense: Onate - Holding teams to 41 points per game. Eldorado not one of the better offensive teams.
Hobbs vs Sandia, Sat:
This game will be won at the basket and which team capitalizes on buckets out of their basket offense. Sandia swings the ball well but has Wroten unmatched in the paint. Hobbs has the flew but will need to hit the 15 foot jumpers.
Backcourt: Hobbs
Frontcourt: Sandia
Offense: Sandia
Defense: Hobbs
X-Factor: Bobby Tapia of Sandia the unsung hero in the state tournament last season along with Sandia having a few underrated guards like Kobe Smith and Eric Sandlin matching up well with Hobbs guards.
2nd Quadrant
#4. Carlsbad
#5. Valley
#12. Atrisco Heritage Academy
#13. Volcano Vista
Quadrant Preview:
The quadrant with the top players in the 2017 classification for 6A basketball. You could see up to four or five in the Top 10 overall.
The Pick:
Valley
Top Player:
Brenden Boatwright (Carlsbad)
5 Other Top Players:
Anthony Chavez (Valley), David Cormier (Volcano Vista), Segun Okeyu (Valley), Teton Saltes (Valley), Estevan Martinez (Atrisco)
Carlsbad vs Volcano Vista, Sat:
Maybe the best game in the 6A bracket. Plenty of talent on both ends and will be a battle won in the fourth quarter.
Backcourt: Volcano
Frontcourt: Carlsbad
Offense: Carlsbad
Defense: Carlsbad
X-Factor: Tempo - Carlsbad will get out and make Volcano make decisions in the backcourt as their guards can defend the length of the court.
Valley vs Atrisco Heritage, Sat:
The 5-12 curse game is one to pick with an upset. Valley just has too much talent to lose to a district foe.
Backcourt: Valley
Frontcourt: Valley
Offense: Valley
Defense: Atrisco - Valley maybe wins the battle but a close one that I could see Head coach Adrian Ortega make some adjustments to contain.
3rd Quadrant
#2. Cleveland
#7. Rio Grande
#10 Gadsden
#15. La Cueva
Quadrant Overview:
The Cleveland Storm have been the headline throughout the season and one of the deepest teams in the quadrant. Head coach Brian Smith has a ring and this could be a better team than the 2015 runner up team. Rio Grande and Gadsden are two tough teams and evenly matched with a solid prospect but Gadsden, even though playing in Tasker, might see one of the rowdiest crowds in the Valley.
The Pick
Cleveland
Top Player
Marcus Williams (Cleveland)
5 Other Top Players
Jose Rodriguez Jr (Rio Grande), Marshall Moore (Rio Grande), Tomas Cano (Gadsden), Elijah Herron (La Cueva), Marcus Hill (Cleveland).
Cleveland vs La Cueva, Sat:
The Cleveland Storm have too much depth and overall athletes in this contest. La Cueva is headed in the right direction and have some players coming back that will have La Cueva back into the conversation for a DC but this season just don't have the ammo to win this war.
Backcourt: Cleveland
Froncourt: Cleveland
Offense: Cleveland
Defense: Cleveland
Rio Grande vs Gadsden, Sat:
A matchup to watch is Cano vs Marshall as two players that could be in the Top-10. Rio Grande has a coach that I respect and like a lot in Sean Jimenez.
Backcourt: Rio Grande
Frontcourt: Rio Grande
Offense: Gadsden
Defense: Gadsden
Coin Flip: Rio Grande - At home in front of their home crowd.
4th Quadrant
#3. Cibola
#6. Albuquerque
#11 Rio Rancho
#14. Las Cruces
Quadrant Preview
A talented group of teams led by a pick to win the entire state tournament in Cibola. Albuquerque and Rio Rancho however create, likely, the most difficult road to the Final Four of the Top-4 seeds with one point in the season all three ranked #1 in the state.
The Final Four Pick
Cibola
Top Player
Clay Patterson (Rio Rancho)
5 Other Top Players
Desmond Carpenter (Cibola), Gabe Bump (Albuquerque), Isaac Maldonado (Cibola), Juan Hurt (Rio Rancho), Markus Collins (Las Cruces)
Cibola vs Las Cruces, Sat
The Cougars will not have an easy opening round or quadrant as the Bulldawgs of Las Cruces has played well down the stretch of the season. They move the swing the ball well and Collins is a player you will love, if you haven't seen him. Cibola however, has weapons and Carpenter is a respectable, basketball loving player that you enjoy watching.
Backcourt: Cibola
Frontcourt: Cibola
Offense: Las Cruces. Basket O only but if Cibola gets hot they will light it up.
Defense: Cibola
Albuquerque vs Rio Rancho, Sat
Right up there up Rio Grande-Gadsden and Carlsbad-Volcano Vista for the top games in the 6A bracket. This one promises to be a instant classic with two top notch guards along with a household battle in head coaches Wally Salata and Ron Garcia of AHS.
Backcourt: Wash. First time I've put wash but could be a coin flip. Patterson/Hurt vs Bump/Allonzo. Edge might go to RRHS but AHS also has a point guard #0 (not listed on their roster) that played well in the Valley game.
Frontcourt: Rio Rancho
Offense: Albuquerque
Defense: Rio Rancho
The Pick: Rio Rancho. They are in a slump but head coach Wally Salata is surely one to get them out of it and a coach I enjoy watching.

5A BASKETBALL
1st Quadrant
#1. Roswell
#8. Centennial
#9. St. Pius X
#16. Del Norte
Quadrant Overview: The Roswell Coyotes are number one in the bracket for a reason and one of the most dominate teams in the state. The one tricky part for the Coyotes is having the defending 5A state champions in the Centennial Hawks. The Hawks also are one of only two teams to defeat Roswell this season. St. Pius X has the ''big'' wins this season but somewhat rocky as of late.
The Final Four Pick: Roswell
Best Player: Daniel Amador (Roswell)
5 Other Top Players: Cesar Molina (Centennial), Emilio Arellano (St. Pius X), Daniel Flores (Del Norte), Chris Mesquita (Roswell), Tennessee Owens (Centennial)
Roswell vs Del Norte, Sat, 5pm: It would a story if an upset came here, 5A classification (even when it was 4A) this has been a match up on the verge of an upset - thinking Goddard/Los Alamos, Gallup/Kirtland Central, Capital/Centennial. Chances are slim but Del Norte spreads the floor well and will handle the Roswell press. This will be the best team that they have faced this season though.
Backcourt: Roswell
Frontcourt: Roswell
Offense: Del Norte - move the ball well in their halfcourt offense.
Defense: Roswell
X-Factor: Depth, Press and future Hall of Fame coach in Britt Cooper
Centennial vs St. Pius X, Sat, 6pm: This could be one of the closest opening round games in the tournament. Centennial is down one of their best shooters (maybe one of the best in the classification) and St. Pius X was recently without head coach Damian Segura. Not to sure if that's on-going.
Backcourt: Centennial
Frontcourt: Centennial
Offense: St. Pius X
Defense: Centennial - This halfcourt trap dominated last season and you could expect them to bother a slower of pace St Pius X program.
X-Factor: Pace - St. Pius X is always well coached and if they control the pace Centennial wants to rattle with then it could come down to the wire.
2nd Quadrant
#4 Farmington
#5 Espanola Valley
#12 Piedra Vista
#13 Bernalillo
Quadrant Overview: A tough district, even though each quadrant in 5A is tough, this one could feature two upsets if you're a beating man this would be the one to take a look at. However, Farmington is playing well right now and could create issues for Bernalillo. The sleeper in the group though is the Piedra Vista Panthers with two guards that could score in a hurry.
Final Four Pick: Farmington
Best Player: Uriah Arellano (Espanola Valley)
5 Other Players: David Riley (Farmington), Tyren King (Farmington), Azaziah Salazar (Espanola), Ty Darnell (Bernalillo), Keegan Acosta (Piedra Vista) .
Farmington vs Bernalillo, Sat, 7pm: Bernalillo has the shooter and coach with two state titles but Farmington has the depth and options along with the inside presence of David Riley at 6-foot-7 who had 19 points in the District championship.
Backcourt: Farmington - Tyren King, Berrett Bentley and Diego Corely could each go off.
Frontcourt: Farmington
Offense: Bernalillo
Defense: Farmington
X-Factor: Weapons - Farmington
Espanola Valley vs Piedra Vista, Sat, 5pm: The Sundevils have somewhat overachieved this season. I tried to avoid saying that but having graduating top players and they are expected to be good each season. Well this season they were going to be young and inexperienced but they have lived up to the notion of always being good. Piedra Vista has two guards that could score and might be one to grab the popcorn and watch some outside shooting from both teams.
Backcourt: Piedra Vista - Gave the edge to Acosta and Graham (Jarrett)
Froncourt: Espanola - AZ has been solid but almost went with Compton of PV.
Offense: Piedra Vista
Defense: Espanola
X-Factor: Program Experience at state - Espanola.
3rd Quadrant
#2. Grants
#7 Gallup
#10 Belen
#15 Moriarty
Quadrant Preview: Grants, pretty much a 1-seed in the Southern Region of the bracket. They have an extremely deep team that will be fun to watch. Gallup and Belen could match for the must see game in this classification.
Final Four Pick: Grants
Best Player: Richie Lucero (Grants)
5 Other Top Players: Colton Lowely (Gallup), Matthew Begay (Gallup), Matt Vail (Grants), Michael Chambers (Grants), Jake Flaming (Moriarty).
Grants vs Moriarty, Sat, 7pm: District opponents square off, like they didn't play enough in Districts, for the third time this season. The Pirates bring the depth and if the first two games are any indication this one could be over by half - 20 point win in the first meeting; 31 point win in the second meeting.
Backcourt: Grants
Frontcourt: Grants
Offense: Grants
Defense: Grants
Xtra Factor: District opponents squaring off is a tricky thing, Jake Flaming is a stud for Moriarty (a college basketball prospect) but won't be nearly enough.
Gallup vs Belen, Sat, 7pm: When looking at rising coaches Belen has head coach Patrick Mondragon standing among the top. Gallup has a duo in Begay (Matthew) and Colton Lowely who are studs. This winner could be an upset pick but Gallup won't go without a fight winning some big games.
Backcourt: Gallup
Frontcourt: Gallup
Offense: Belen
Defense: Belen
X-Factor: We tried hitting on this in the summer but anytime you have a new head coach there will be a transition. Especially when it's the first time as a head coach overall. Belen gets this category and avenge the loss.
4th Quadrant
#3 Capital
#6 Los Lunas
#11 Goddard
#14 Artesia
Quadrant Preview: This quadrant is has those teams that are in the tier of next to Grants-Roswe, maybe the 1A tier in Capital-Los Lunas. Capital is flirting with being in that tier, Los Lunas the overachieving team of juniors that will be a favorite in 2017. Goddard continues to improve their program and shooting studs. Artesia has reason to challenge Capital with Houghtaling but will need to play near perfect.
The Final Four Pick: Capital
Best Player: Eric Coca
5 Other Top Players: Mario Trujillo (Los Lunas), Jeremy Anaya (Capital), Noah Waide (Goddard), Kayden Walker (Los Lunas), LeAnthoney Harrison (Goddard)
Capital vs Artesia, Sat, 7pm: This contest has a quality match up with Capital a basket strength team and Artesia able to match it but have a big in 6'5 Houghtaling who can board in the paint or push the ball as well.
Backcourt: Capital
Frontcourt: Artesia
Offense: Capital
Defense: Capital
X-Factor: Artesia played upset last season as a 14 seed could they repeat and be the March giant killers. Hard to imagine but a team led by Mike Mondragon I wouldn't be surprised.
Los Lunas vs Goddard, Sat, 5pm: 5A has the more likely upsets in the group, this one peaks my interest because of the weapons Goddard has inside and out. That doesn't take away from how good Los Lunas is, because they are good.
Backcourt: Los Lunas. They have more in Wisneski, Zeller and Walker but Goddard's Harrison and Waide are tough.
Frontcourt: Goddard.
Offense: Los Lunas
Defense: Defense
X-Factor: Los Lunas. Playing at home and if this one stays in the 40's like the Tigers prefer then I have to go with LL by a hair.

4A BASKETBALL
1st Quadrant
#1. Hope Christian (25-2)
#8. Sandia Prep (12-15)
#9. St. Mikes (10-14)
#16. Cobre (11-14)
Quadrant Overview: Nothing like having three teams (out of four) from one district. Add the fact that the number one seed is looking for a 4-peat. The majority favorite in the group is Hope Christian who each season from start to finish is the best team in the classification.
The Final Four Pick: Hope Christian
Best Player: Jordan Leake (Hope Christian)
5 Other Top Players: Caleb Meyer-Hagen (Hope/2016/F), Marcus Medina (Hope/2017/G), Dustin Gaddis (Sandia Prep/2016/F), Damian Guck (Cobre HS/2019/F), Cameron Conway (St. Mikes/2016/F)
Hope vs Cobre, Sat, TBA: The two will meet for the first time this season. Hope Christian is the best team in the classification and ranked second in the entire classification.
Offense: Hope
Defense: Hope
X-Factor: Cobre. Won't be enough however worth the mention. Freshman big man Damian Guck with 11 pts and 7 rebounds a game.
Sandia Prep vs St. Mikes, Sat, 6pm: This will be the third meeting between the district foes. Sandia Prep owns the series 2-0 with a close 51-49 win on February 9th.
Offense: Sandia Prep
Defense: St. Mikes
Match-Up: Sandia Prep. Two top forwards in Cameron Conway (SM) who had 26 points in their District Tournament game. Dustin Gaddis is one of the best players in the state - Top 50 player.
2nd Quadrant
#4. Pojoaque Valley (21-7)
#5. Silver (18-7)
#12 Shiprock (17-12)
#13 Socorro (13-15)
Quadrant Overview
Maybe one of the toughest quadrants in the 4A bracket with two teams that could win the other two quadrants. Silver and Pojoaque Valley are two outstanding teams and will be one of the best Elite 8 games at the Start Center (if they win; we predict) outside of the Santa Rosa-Tucumcari game in 3A.
The Final Four Pick
Silver
Best Player
James Garcia (Pojoaque Valley)
5 Other Top Players
Dominic Roybal (Pojoaque Valley), Tevon Flowers (Pojoaque Valley), Joshua Saenz (Silver), Dennis Woods (Socorro), Elijah Harry (Shiprock)
Pojoaque Valley vs Socorro, Sat, 7pm
The Elks and Warriors meet in the first week of the season with the Elks winning 55-32. Socorro has a new head coach since that meeting and playing well going 4-2 to end their season and 8-3 in their last 11.
Offense: Pojoaque
Defense: Pojoaque
Match Up: Dennis Woods vs James Garcia. Both are playing well this season and Woods will get his but Garcia has the better supporting caste from Royba, Flowers, Devon Escobedo and Andres Romero.
Silver vs Shiprock, Sat, 1pm
The Chieftains of Shiprock make the journey form the top Northwest corner to the bottom of the Southwest corner of the state. Shiprock is playing their best basketball right now with Silver winning and more importantly getting all players back from injury.
Offense: Shiprock
Defense: Silver
X-Factor: Silver has more depth and options on the roster. This one will be close, maybe more upset alert on it, but in the end the Colts will have more firepower to end the game.
3rd Quadrant
#2. Robertson (24-4)
#7. Portales (17-9)
#10. Kirtland Central (12-15)
#15. Wingate (15-14)
Quadrant Preview
Top to bottom this quadrant is one of the best. Wingate at a 15-seed, is one of the best 15-seeds in any bracket. Robertson having the best years in recent years. Portales and Kirtland Central are two very good teams and either one is a viable suitor to upset Robertson in the Elite 8.
The Final Four Pick
Robertson
Best Player
Jermie Karngbaye (Portales)
5 Other Top Players
Warren Fulgenzi (Robertson), Sebastian Gonzales (Robertson), Bryson Dowdy (Kirtland Central), Jr Ramirez (Portales), Kyle Begay (Wingate)
Robertson vs Wingate, Sat, 5pm
Wingate will be one of those teams that will always put themselves in a situation for a possible upset. Robertson has one of the most talented rosters in 4A.
Offense: Robertson
Defense: Robertson
Style X-Factor: Wingate is never a good matchup in terms of defending or style of play. They are well coached and just one of those programs that hang around. It will make for a fun first half scare but Robertson will have too much continued power.
Portales vs Kirtland Central, Sat, 6pm
The Rams are the favorites but this one might be an on-the-fence pick. Right now I am saying upset pick in this one even though I really like this Rams team.
Offense: Kirtland
Defense: Portales
Coin Flip X-Factor: Kargnbaye in the paint for Portales is the best player in the paint in 4A. Kirtland Central might have more balanced attack.
4th Quadrant
#3. West Las Vegas
#6. Bloomfield
#11 Santa Fe Indian
#14. Taos
Quadrant Preview
DJ Bustos (West Las Vegas) is one of the most sought after college level players in 4A basketball. Alone he is the headline to watch this quadrant this season. Bloomfield a sleeper in the field could just be that team to play spoiler for the Dons returning to the Final Four.
The Final Four Pick
Bloomfield
Best Player
DJ Bustos (West LV)
5 Others
Malachi Pablo (Bloomfield), Christian Chavez (Bloomfield), Miguel Sena (West LV), Francis Calabaza (SFIS), Miguel Padilla (Taos)
West Las Vegas vs Taos, Sat, 5pm
The district opponents will lace them up again for the third time with West owning the series 2-0. The Dons won a February 13th contest 91-62.
Offense: West Las Vegas
Defense: West Las Vegas
That District Thing: Beating a team three times in a season is hard. There is always that scary feeling of an upset and this one narrowly had me taking the Tigers, knowing that coach Trujillo will have them more than ready.
Bloomfield vs Santa Fe Indian, Sat, 5pm
The Bobcats and Braves will square off in a jam packed facility, meeting for the first time this season. Santa Fe Indian playing well as of late making a run to their District Tournament championship.
Offense: Bloomfield
Defense: Bloomfield
X-Factor: SFIS might average more points per game but offensively and consistently the Bobcats are 10 points better than the Braves.
