Favorites Ranked: Making the Case As True Title Favorites

Grine: Making The Case
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we take a look at our favorites to run down the famous ramp at the WisePies Arena (Aka The PIT). Plenty of basketball to play but we say goodbye to January with clear eyes on our favorites.

RANKING THE TITLE CONTENDERS

(1) Cibola Cougars (17-2, 3-0): No, we are not jumping to a quick reaction to their double overtime win over, then No. 1 Cleveland on Friday night (Okay, maybe just a bit but who's judging). The Cougars are better than expected, however and have one of the better rosters with 'basketball' players. Yes, others have depth, athletes and quality teams. I like this Cougars team though with the roster and when they are attacking they look unstoppable. Not given enough praise but Desmond Carpenter is a kid I like, guard flat out is a hooper. Had 21 against Cleveland and just makes smart decisions with the ball. Senior Isaac Maldanodo in the paint is solid as they come and sophomore wing Cameron Dixon has the shooting confidence of a vet. Don't worry I'm not forgetting about senior guard Carlos Barela who made huge plays in the fourth quarter.

(2) Cleveland Storm (16-5, 2-1): The Storm fell on Friday but they have the roster to battle with any team in 6A basketball and have those athletes most schools could just hope for. Marcus Williams, is good, and without questions one of the top players in the state of New Mexico. The other players we like were sophomore Jayden Phillips and junior Marcus Hill, who has come on strong as of late. Hill, not sper quick, but uses his body well creating space and getting his shot. Would love to see post Adam Cook on the block more as he would be more of a threat like he was in the second half than floating by the elbow.

(3) Onate Knights (18-3, 3-0): We all know the name, Johnny McCants, is as good as advertised. The forward can beat you from the outside but also runs in transition and finishes above the rim. The thing we like about the Knights is that they can beat you running (yes, they push tempo more this season) but they have the statistic you can't measure with a high chemistry team. Hunter Thomas (Jr) is known to knock down from the outside but have weapons through the roster.

(4) Valley Vikings (13-6, 2-1): The Vikings are an interesting team, much like Rio Rancho who you will also find on this list. The Vikings have talent but youth might be prevailing in some of the losses. Sophomore point guard Anthony Chavez is without question one, if not, the best point guards in the state. Sophomore win Segun Oyeku can score in the paint or knock down from the three. Teton Saltes, is a beast in the paint, but maybe needs to be more 'beastly' and just own the paint.

(5) Albuquerque Bulldogs (12-7, 3-0): The Bulldogs are coming on strong as of late with a (3-0) start to district play, taking a first place leap in the district. Not to sure what has come over the Dogs but they are riding a 5-game winning streak and playing well as of late. Gabe Bump is good and the name to know along with wing Allonzo Armijo. Depth is not their strong suit but this duo has won them games before and could be winning them games now. Hesitate to take them above Valley, even though they beat them just this week. This is no knock to the Dogs as they played upset last March and why not take them low again. The reason I have them at 5th right now is they have one of those players like Bump who if given the green light will/could win you games when needed.

(6) Carlsbad Cavemen (16-6, 2-0): I have a hard time putting the Cavemen at 6th as I initially wanted to put them at 4. I said their backcourt was hurting when I seen them in Decemeber. Since then? Point guard Ralph Cueto has had a pair of solid games. I like Brenden Boatright, a lot as a division one player and when he gets healthy could maybe play cinderella in March. I've said it better coach Brown is one of my favorites, if we had a ranking he would be Top-3. This team might be one of the better defensive teams on the list of Top-6.

(7) Rio Rancho Rams (14-7, 2-1): The Rams have played with my heart a little bit. Why? Well, I like them a lot and they have a stud in Clay Patterson. However, they win a good game then play close with others that maybe they should blow out if they want to be a Final Four contender. This team is good but they might be in that year of experience. However, this is why I am still high on them being an upset team in March. Youth! Yes, that sounds like a contradiction but when they get out of the first round these good young players like Juan Hurt and Patterson might 'instinctly' go to work and win you a game. They will create problems in the open court and if you have shaky guards on O or D they will (could) expose you real quick. The difference between them and Valley? Might be Saltes to the very young backcourt for the Rams.

(8) Sandia Matadors (8-8, 3-0): This season hasn't been the one we have expected from the Matadors at (8-8) on the season but they have played well as of late winning 6 of their last 8 games. Yes, the competition hasn't been the best as they beat six teams outside of playoff talk minus Mayfield. However, they went into double overtime with Valley, falling 74-71 in week 11 that might say they are back as a possibility. Caleb Wroten at 6'9'' is one of the better senior forwards in the state and a perfect next level post. The Matadors have been sort of searching for an identity this season, going far into their bench but lacking that go-to scoring guard. I liked Kobe Smith who is much like Marcus Hill of Cleveland and also a player for the future in Elijah Ferguson but his time will come. Point guard Eric Sandlin penetrates well and I took notice. They are missing that outside shooter much like Carlsbad. Take note that Bobby Tapia didn't play when I seen them in action who was a March headline in 2015.

The Rest On Our Eye Test

(9) Rio Grande: I like Marshall Moore and Jose Rodriguez Jr. as Top 30 players.
(10) Mayfield: Most have said inconsistent and that's true. But new coach and system. They are peaking when you want them too. Jay Arnold is a top forward, I mentioned Holguin early in December and he's playing better.
(11) Gadsden: Tomas Cano is a quality spot up shooter who sort of does everything inside and outside. Kevin Medrano is a new name for you.
(12) Hobbs: Pierre Swain is good but in my opinion the flex offense is interesting for a high tempo tradition (I'll be broad).
(13) Atrisco Heritage Academy: Estevan Martinez a big that does good things but mixture of youth might be a one game team in state.
(14) Santa Fe: They earned their first district win since joining 6A. They have some athletes that are playing with more confidence.
(15) Las Cruces: Marus Collins is fun to watch but team is not deep enough but future is bright.
(16) La Cueva: Flying under the radar and have some good pieces but like the other LC they could be a year away.

--

(17) Volcano Vista: Might be home in March but had to add them because their roster is too good. Comier is good, similar to a McCants of Onate. Freshmen Gray is a name to remember.

Week 12 6A Tournament Watch: Ranking the Fringe

Week 12 Tournament Watch: Locks, Autos and Fringe
Joshua J Grine

Three weeks are left for several teams on the fringe (golf term for hoops so-called bubble teams). Each classification is a toss up for the tournament and who will be placed in certain areas but we take a look at those teams on the fringe.

Locks are those teams that will be in the state tournament. Autos are our predicted district champions (DC), but could be a curse. Finally, the fringe is our teams that have work to do the next three weeks.

Class 6A Basketball

Locks: Cleveland, Rio Rancho, Cibola, Onate, Carlsbad, Albuquerque, Valley, Gadsden, Hobbs, Rio Grande, Atrisco Heritage Academy
Autos: Cibola, Sandia, Onate, Carlsbad, Albuquerque
Fringe: Santa Fe, La Cueva, Mayfield, Las Cruces, Volcano Vista, Highland, Manzano

Ranking the Fringe Teams

1. La Cueva (8-11, 3-0):
Right now they have the best shot and ranking but things could take a shift for them and it's out of their control. If Las Cruces and Volcano Vista finish above Mayfield and Santa Fe they will would fall behind them -likely. The win in the criteria is a possible district runner up. Fringe wins: Volcano Vista.
Seed: 13

2. Santa Fe (8-12, 1-2):
The Demons got the win that they needed over Volcano Vista that has pushed them up in the Fringe Rankings. They have some losses that hurt them but right now a fourth place finish in the best district in 1-6A moves them this high. Fringe wins: Highland, Las Cruces and Volcano Vista.
Seed: 14

3. Mayfield (9-12, 2-1):
The Trojans were one of my "eye test" favorites this season, and have the makings to be a very dangerous team in the next year or two. The Trojans right now moving above Las Cruces in district play pushed them up in the rankings. Las Cruces would likely be the top ranked team with resume (possibly Volcano Vista had they beat Santa Fe). Fringe wins: Las Cruces.
Seed: 15

4. Las Cruces (10-11, 1-3):
The Bulldawgs haven't done well to start the season but played well right before district play. They could have been in the LOCK but stumbled out the gate in district play. Las Cruces wins over Sandia and La Cueva help vs Santa Fe's fringe win they fall though. Fringe wins: Sandia, La Cueva.
Seed: 16

5. Volcano Vista (7-12, 0-4): The Hawks have the resume that if you look closer is more IN than OUT. The one or two things that they have to accomplish is beating Santa Fe and stealing one game over top three in this district. Right now they are behind Santa Fe on the ranking because of the recent loss. Fringe wins: Sandia, La Cueva, Manzano (twice), Highland, Hobbs.
Seed: 17

6. Manzano (6-13, 1-2):
The Monarchs have a young energized team that is head back in the right direction but might be a year or two away from really making the leap. Key fringe win: Sandia (54-53), Rio Grande (57-54 OT) and Highland (58-56)
Seed: 18

7. Highland (5-13, 1-3):
Okay, this district is a one-bid, probably two bid league. So why do we have a 1-3 team listed? Well, Highland is one of those 'out' teams that could make a case if they finish third and play well in the tournament. Wins over fellow fringe teams: Santa Fe (57-56). What pushes them down is a 5 win season and likely the best is finishing third in a weak district.
Seed: 19

Week 12: 5A District Rankings and Seeds Predicted

Week 12: 5A District Rankings and Seeds Predicted
Joshua J Grine

We are coming at your with predictions this week as we take a look a 5A basketball and where teams are along with where we think teams will be.

District 1-5A Rankings
1. Farmington (3-0)
2. Gallup (2-1)
3. Piedra Vista (1-2)
4. Miyamura (2-1)
5. Aztec (0-4)

Grine: Farmington might be one of the hottest teams right now in 5A with their win over Gallup. The Bengals take a hit losing at home to Farmington and will be affected in their seed but should be okay. We knew they wouldn't be as dominate under a new HC. Piedra Vista is ranked above Miyamura right now because we think most teams have a fluke loss. Aztec will have one win this season.

District 2-5A Rankings
1. Capital (3-1)
2. Espanola Valley (2-1)
3. Del Norte (1-2)
4. Bernalillo (1-2)
5. Los Alamos (1-2)

Grine: Could their be a case where all five teams go dancing? It would be hard to imagine but nothing is impossible. This might be the only district in the state with a 99.9% team out ,see we leave the .01% to those who will point out that they could still win their district tournament (insert "so you say there's a chance meme). Capital's loss was nothing more than a nightmare that won't happen again. Espanola Valley is good, not great at this point, but will be a solid tournament scare for a Top-5 team. Del Norte is good, and will be a good 12-16 seed that will harm someone if they catch you sleeping. Bernalillo needs a good shooting night, every night.

District 3-5A Rankings
1. Centennial (3-1)
2. Los Lunas (4-0)
3. Belen (2-2)
4. Santa Teresa (2-2)
5. Valencia (1-3)
6. Chaparral (0-4)

Grine: Sound the horns, I once again ranked someone out of place. But, wait this is no knock to the Tigers of Los Lunas. Team is is solid and if you continue to read the feature I am high on them. However, Centennial is only getting better and a defending state champion will be in the mix for a DC (even if they both go 9-1). The league is top heavy with Belen playing third wheel.

District 4-5A Rankings
Roswell (1-0)
Goddard (0-1)
Artesia (1-0)
Lovington (0-1)

Grine: Roswell....... Oh, I guess we can continue because the league actually has a pair of teams that you could see playing on Wednesday at The PIT (or whatever it's officially called). Goddard is could, didn't look like it against Roswell but they will be a handful come state tournament. Artesia's Ethan Duff might of been the shot to save the season with the buzzer beating win over Lovington. Oddly Lovington could potentially still be in the mix at 6-12 for a bid.

District 5-5A Rankings
1. Grants
2. St. Pius X
3. Moriarty
4. Albuquerque Academy

Grine: Grants is good, very good. They are in play for a 1-seed. St. Pius X is the team you don't want to face. They have solid wins over other quality teams and most years after they lose early in the state tournament they come out of nowhere to go deep into March. They have Arellano kid playing well and the last good guard they had in Micah Sanchez led them to a title. Moriarty is in the hunt and will play on the shoulders of Flaming trying to make one last tour a successful one.

Eye Test Ranking of Teams
1. Grants
2. Roswell
3. Capital
4. Centennial
5. Los Lunas
6. St. Pius X
7. Espanola Valley
8. Goddard
9. Farmington
10. Gallup
11. Belen
12. Piedra Vista
13. Del Norte
14. Bernalillo
15. Artesia
16. Moriarty

Seeds and Crystal Ball (Not based on our rankings but current District Standings)
1. Grants vs 16 Los Alamos
8. Espanola Valley vs 9. Gallup
5. Los Lunas vs 12. Bernalillo
4. St. Pius X vs 13. Del Norte
3. Capital vs 14 Artesia
6. Centennial vs 11. Goddard
7. Farmington vs. 10 Belen
2. Roswell vs 15. Moriarty

Okay, here come the questions with the bracket for Week 12 on Tuesday (before games).

No Piedra Vista?: Right now they are behind Miyamyua and Miyamura has a H-2-H loss to 16 Los Alamos. This bracket could change drastically by tomorrow morning.

St. Pius X at 4, Really? Well, they have the wins over other teams including Los Lunas and Farmington who are DC right now.

Week 12: Wednesday Hoops

Wednesday
Bernalillo 47, Espanola Valley 45
Eldorado 74, Manzano 66
Los Lunas 44, Valencia 29
Pojoaque Valley 58, Robertson 52
Sandia 55, La Cueva 42
Valley 63, Rio Grande 46

Performers
Martin Trujillo - Los Lunas - 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Anthony Molina - Valley - 25 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds.
Dakota Yancey - Rio Grande - 18 points and 7 rebounds.
Braxton Bouyer - Manzano 17 points
Eric Sonnenberg - Manzano - 16 points.
Cameron Cauley - Manzano - 10 points.

Questions
What is wrong at Rio Grande? They have moved way down into the 12-16 seed range.
Sandia claiming a Top-8 seed now at (4-0)?
Pojoaque Valley playing even better and one of the better/best 4A defensive teams?
Bernalillo one of the best at home?

Week Five All-NMPreps.com Team

Joshua J. Grine

Each week the team at NMPreps.com creates the All-NMPreps.com Team with the top performances of the past week.

Starting Five

Martin Trujillo, Los Lunas HS: The Tigers forward had great week highlighted by a 25 point, 21 rebound during week five.

Jarrett Graham, Piedra Vista HS: The sophomore has been mentioned several times but a 40-point night almost automatically places him on the week five team.

Brenden Boatwright, Carlsbad HS: The big man had back-toback games of 24 points (vs. Goddard) and 23 points (vs. Las Cruces).

Marshall Moore, Rio Grande HS: The Ravens guard had 22-points against a top-25 team in Volcano Vista this week.

Dalton Privett, Dora HS: The Dora product went off for 34-points this week against Floyd High School.

Second Five

Johnny McCants, Onate HS: It's hard to not place him on the All-New Mexico team again as McCants went off for 32-points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocks against El Dorado (TX)

Anthony Chavez, Valley HS: Chavez has a big night against Cleveland going for 26 points in the win.

Desmond Carpenter, Cibola HS: Carpenter and the Cougars continue winning this season and notch a win over West Mesa behind 20 points.

Tomas Cano, Gadsden HS: 19 points, 7 boards and 7 blocks in a win over Santa Teresa for the rising prospect.

Bradley Hatten, Grants HS: The big man had back to back double figure games with 19 points in a win over Bernalillo and 15 against Cliff.

Reserves

Santi Gonzales, Santa Fe HS: 17 points in a win over St. Mikes.

Bryce Rewalt, Centennial HS: Another new name on the scene who poured in 6 3-pointers for 18 points this week.

Week Four All-NMPreps.com Team

Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Each week the team at NMPreps.com creates the All-NMPreps.com Team with the top performances of the past week.

Starting Five

Eric Coca, Capital HS: MVP of the Capital City Invite. Nightly the leader and solidifying himself as one of the top players in the state of New Mexico.

Tyren King, Farmington HS: King had 19 points to lead the Scorpions to their first championship at their Marv Sanders Invite since 2003. King also took home MVP honors for the tournament.

Matthew Begay, Gallup HS: Under the radar player to this point but Begay is a smooth player and nightly proved that he is the number two to the duo of him and Lowely of Gallup.

Daniel Amador, Roswell HS: It's hard not to place this young fella on the team after an impressive, maybe top performance of the season with 46-points in a win during the Hub City Tournament in Belen.

AZ Salazar, Espanola Valley HS: Salazar took home the MVP honors of the Sundevil invite for his consistent play each night for the Sundevils. Salazar had a game high 13-points of the championship.

Second Five

Tomas Cano, Gadsden HS: Every time you turn around Cano is having a top night for the Panthers as they are searching for respect around the state. Cano had a 25 point night and a 22 point night.

James Garcia, Pojoaque Valley HS: Another under the radar type of players who could place himself among the Top-25 players in the entire state as the outside shooting 6-4 wing is a talented player and he is only a junior.

Johnny McCants, Onate HS: Big games nightly with back to back double-doubles in the Joe Armijo Tournament. The Knights also took down the number one team in the state of New Mexico in Carlsbad with McCants having 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Anthony Chavez, Valley HS: Chavez again proves again why we consider him one of the top players in the state and maybe the best point guard in the state. Chavez is smooth off the dribble and makes senior decisions with the ball, yet the guard is only a sophomore.

Juan Hurt, Rio Rancho HS: Nothing can stop, Hurt, not even a busted lip as Hurt led the way for the Rams with a big game against Chaparral. Hurt was hot all day from the outside. Hurt had 16 points on the final night. Another duo like Begay as Hurt has Patterson.

Reserves

Clay Patterson, Rio Rancho HS - 23 vs Gallup, 24 vs Mayfield, 14 vs Gallup, 14 vs Chaparral at the City of Champions Invite.

Jarrett Graham, Piedra Vista HS - had a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, his 3rd double-double of the season.

W12 What To Watch: Predicting Top 8 Weekday Games

Crystal Ball: Predicting Top 8 Weekday Games

Well, last week on my picks I missed on the game of the week, even though I said it would be a three point game with Cleveland and Cibola. Overall, I went 6-2 on my picks so not too bad, the upset was right taking Farmington over Gallup.

Game of the Weekday
Lordsburg (18-1) at Mesilla Valley Christian (9-7), 6:30pm, Tuesday:
This will be an important game for both teams but it will reveal who the SonBlazers are after a tough schedule. They will have to limit the Mavericks offense if they want to be successful as they are 64 points per game and only putting up 53.

Prediction: Lordsburg 60, Mesilla Valley 49

Mora (13-5) at Questa (8-9), 3:30pm, Tuesday: The Rangers are coming off a tough loss to Melrose in the battle for number. Why this game is important; Mora is coming off the loss but Questa is a scary opponent to play after the loss. They have a few good games under their belt and might get Mora and the right time.

Prediction: Mora 62, Questa 51

No. 3 Cleveland at No. 12 Rio Rancho, 7PM, Tuesday: The battle for the River Ranch. The Storm are coming off a loss last week. My take if the Storm want to win this game they have to pound it inside to their frontcourt as they have the better bigs or more experienced. Rio Rancho could create problems, like Cibola did with their backcourt. The Rams could win this game in the backcourt.

Prediction: Rio Rancho 71, Cleveland 67

Piedra Vista (11-9) at No. 20 Farmington (17-3), 7pm, Tuesday: Farmington and Piedra Vista square off and fight for position in district 1-5A. Farmington the overwhelming favorite as they are 10-1 at home while the Panthers are 1-8 on the road.

Prediction: Farmington 71, Piedra Vista 54

No. 25 Sandia (8-8) vs No. 24 La Cueva (8-11), 7pm, Wednesday: Battle for the auto bid in District 2-6A. This could potentially be a one bid league and the winner take control of the lead as both are (3-0) right now. Both are playing well lately and it's the Sandia big man Caleb Wroten who has gone for double-doubles to start district against La Cueva who has a mixture of underrated talented.

Prediction: Sandia 59, La Cueva 52

No. 18 Robertson (17-2) vs Pojoaque Valley (16-4), 7pm, Wednesday: Okay, this District could arguably be the toughest in 4A and the state. All teams are playoff type teams with three being in the conversation for 2-6 seeds. Pojoaque Valley has been perfect at home going 9-0 but Robertson is the story of the year. The two games Robertson has lost was on the road and if they allow Pojoaque Valley guards Dom Roybal and James Garcia to shoot this could be a scoring contest. Pojoaque Valley is a sound defensive team and will be the factor of stops in who wins this game.

Prediction: Pojoaque 60, Robertson 59

Bloomfield (13-6) vs Kirtland Central (8-12), 7pm, Thursday: The week continues for the leaders in each district with 1-4A battle of 4-0 teams. Bloomfield brings a balanced approach and plays well on the road along with limiting teams to 48 points per game. Kirtland Central played well, winning district last season and again look in that place. Bloomfield is on a 6-game winning streak and scoring well in the 60's and 70's during the streak sllowing points in the 30's or 40's in the last three games.

Prediction: Bloomfield 65, Kirtland Central 62

No. 9 Valley (13-6) vs No. 13 Rio Grande (13-6): Tale of the mystery teams on Wednesday night as the Valley Vikings won and lost big games last week. Rio Grande, battling injuries is coming off an embarassing 35 point loss to Albuquerque High. The Ravens hope to come out with a little more urgency as they have fallen out of the top-8 and potentially fourth in district that could have them in the bubble of teams that will play a Top-4 team in state.

Prediction: Valley 71, Rio Grande 59

Maxprep Rankings

I normally don't worry about them too much and by the end of district some stuff straightens out, but is anyone else confused by them at this point. In 3A boys they keep changing dramatically for some teams and not for others and I can't figure out why. I guess some games are being considered poor wins. Just using us for example, last Thursday we were ranked 7th with a 4.5 rating with an 11-5 record. We win two district games, move to 13-5 and our rating drops to 2.8 and we stay 7th. There is a team ahead of us who we beat head to head, lost 2 games recently and though their rating also dropped, they are still ranked ahead of us. Every teams rating dropped this week, even teams who didn't lose a game. Curious to me. Is this happening in any other classes?
