Henderson: Predictions On Where The Un-Signed Seniors Will Commit

Teton Saltes - Valley - Defensive End
Have to think he pulls the trigger and signs with Oregon. I am surprised that he is still un-committed at this point to be honest. He recently took trips to CAL and to San Diego State. He also told me he might not even make a commitment before or on Signing Day, what that means. Prediction: Oregon

Justin Houghtaling - Artesia - Quarterback
Though Houghtaling has a baseball offer on the table from the New Mexico Lobos, I think he follows his heart and heads east to West Texas A&M where he was recently offered by the Buffs. His uncle attended West Texas A&M, so I think him heading to Canyon makes sense. Prediction: West Texas A&M

Noah Sweitzer - Eldorado - Running Back/Linebacker
I really feel that he is a guy that could play D1 football somewhere, but the good thing is he has a handful of D-2 offers on the table right now and I think it comes down between three: Highlands, Eastern New Mexico, and West Texas A&M. I don’t have a good feel on which school he is leaning towards and again, he is going to be a baller at any school he attends. Prediction: Eastern New Mexico

Josh Williams - Volcano Vista - Quarterback
Does not even have an offer on the table which I cannot believe. A three year starter that showed tremendous ability time and time again. Great leader and some of the best pocket presence we’ve seen. Good luck to this young man whichever route he takes.

Isaac Amaya - Hobbs - Quarterback
The Hobbs Eagle Quarterback who threw for more than 3,000-yards as a senior has a few offers on the table from Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota) and Earlham College (Indiana). Not sure he’ll head to the midwest or not, but I would like to see him continue playing some ball somewhere. He has proved himself over the last two-years as a guy that can make continued plays and get the ball downfield. Prediction: No Clue

Strong Predictions

Hunter Graham - Alamogordo - Running Back - New Mexico Highlands
Gabe Desoto - Del Norte - Offensive Linemen - New Mexico Highlands
Sabio Morales - West Mesa - Kicker - Eastern New Mexico
Dominic Anaya - Roswell - Athlete - Eastern New Mexico
Demtry Rodriguez - Cleveland - Defensive Linemen - Eastern New Mexico
Landry Hayes - Cleveland - Running Back/Linebacker - Eastern New Mexico
Cory Noel - Las Cruces - Linebacker - Eastern New Mexico
Andres Campos - Las Cruces - Long Snapper - Eastern New Mexico

One-on One: Sandia Prep Guard Dominating

One-on One: Sandia Prep Guard Dominating
Joshua J. Grine

Today, we take a look at one of the top guards in New Mexico, playing for 4A Sandia Prep. Trainor, has an impressive stat line going this season with a 41-point game against Socorro along with a 37 point night against Santa Fe Indian.

Trainor, is one of the better outside shooters but also a defensive minded player with the game against Scororro having 13-steals. Trainor is shooting 35% from behind the 3-point line and around 3 assists per contest.

Well, the ball is in Trainors hands today in the One-On-One Interview with Joshua Grine of NMPreps.com.

More: One-on-One with Amaya Brown

Background
First and Last Name: Madison Trainor
Nickname(s): Madie
Age:16
Jersey Number, Why?: #2, it has been my number for basketball and soccer since 8th grade.
Graduation year: 2017

Interview
Grine: When did you start playing basketball?
Trainor: I started playing basketball when I was 3 years old.

Grine: Who got you involved in the sport? Why basketball, why play?
Trainor: My dad got me involved in the sport. From the age of three, I never wanted to stop dribbling a basketball. I play because I love everything about the game, and there is nothing like being apart of a team.

Grine: Favorite basketball memory from youth? From high school?
Trainor: My favorite basketball memory from youth would be playing on a rec team with all guys. I was the smallest person, and one of the only girls, but I still had a lot of fun playing. My favorite memory from high school basketball is either scoring 41 points this year against socorro, or playing in the Pit against shiprock last year. Even though we lost, it was an amazing feeling playing in front of all those people.

Grine: Any hobbies, collections, special talents outside of sports?
Trainor: I really love to bake.

Grine: Hero? Why?
Trainor: My dad is my hero, because he started out with not much and built a successful business. He is also the most humble and amazing person I know.

Grine: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Trainor: Eventually I want to coach.

Grine: Favorite superhero?
Trainor: Superman.

Grine: Right now what are you listening to in your headphones? What about pre game?
Trainor: Pre game I listen to pandora or my playlist on soundcloud. Most of my music is pop or remixes.

Grine: Any pre game rituals or game day traditions?
Trainor: Not a lot of pre game rituals. Just little superstitions like; using a black hair tie, wearing black socks, and running out for warm up first.

Grine: What are the goals for the rest of the season?
Trainor: We want to finish off the season strong so we can go into state with momentum. A personal goal is to keep scoring for my team, and try to get some of the younger kids to step up.

Grine: Are the Lady Sundevils a playoff team?
Trainor: We can be. We have a lot of work to do, but I believe that our team can play with anybody in our division.

Grine: You guys play in a tough district what gets you into the state tournament?
Trainor: We have to win most of our remaining district games to take us into the state tournament. To do that, as a team we need to finish out games better. If we play as a team, I believe we can go into state strong.

Thank you Madie Trainor for taking the time to sit down with us on NMPreps.com! If you haven't seen her, get out and do it.

Week 11 Weekend Wire

Week 11 Weekend Wire
Joshua J Grine

Each week that we get closer to March the games become more important as we try to separate into tournament teams and those that will be in the stands.

No. 1 Cleveland vs No. 3 Cibola, Fri, 7PM: The Storm are the best team in New Mexico and this could be the preview of what is to come in the Final Four. Marcus Williams (Sr/W) will use this as a NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball candidacy, these are the games that win you the award.

Prediction: Cleveland at home, 64-61

No. 8 Rio Grande at No. 13 Albuquerque High, Fri, 7PM: If you are going to watch this game, get there early. This district has already proven to be a mixture of unknowns. 4 of 5 could win the district and NMPreps.com candidate Gabe Bump will look to improve the Bulldogs to (4-0) as leaders in the standings today.

Prediction: Albuquerque, 77-72

No. 10 Centennial at No. 22 Belen, Sat, 7PM: Centennial and Belen are tied in second place at (2-1) and will need this game to stay in pace for the district championship. Cesar Molina, Bryce Rewalt and Tennessee Owens are coming on strong as of late for Belen.

Prediction: Centennial, 65-52

No. 7 Roswell vs No. 25 Goddard, Fri, 7PM:
The Goddard Rockets are trying to solidify themselves as playoff team and potentially a Top-8 seed. Roswell has Daniel Amador who is having a stellar senior campaign. Noah Waide of Goddard will look to shoot to Rockets into this one.

Prediction: Roswell, 79-64

No. 15 Gallup vs No. 21 Farmington, Fri, 7PM: We all remember the classic Elite Eight comeback last March, the Scorpions up a lot only to lose the commanding lead in the fourth quarter. Colton Lowely was a top prospect coming into the season but has been under the radar with no feedback from the program.

Prediction: Farmington, 61-59

No. 5 Grants vs Pojoaque Valley, Sat, 7PM: Pojoaque Valley was featured as one of our 'hot' teams in January but they will need to play near perfect in this contest. The good news they have guards that can handle the pressure that Grants brings.

Prediction: Grants, 68-61

No. 6 Valley vs Sandia, Fri, 7PM: The Valley Vikings are coming off a loss on Tuesday night in a game that drops them in the playoff conversation. The roster is young and will have setbacks and we are taking the Matadors in this contest. They will have a battle in the frontcourt with 6'9 Caleb Wroten (Sandia) vs 6'6 Teton Saltes (Valley). The X-factor is a more mature but hotter Sandia team and that's not a knock to Valley. I love their roster but plenty of sophomores that we feel more comfortable with Sandia tonight.

Prediction: Sandia 50-48

No. 11 Capital at No. 16 Espanola Valley, Fri, 7PM: This won't be the scoring frenzy you would expect in this match-up, but in no way do I mean these teams can't score. Capital controls the tempo for the most part in each contest and they welcome back the floor general in Eric Coca. Marcos Flores has played well lately and Uriah Arellano is returning to form. I like Capital in the redemption to return as district favorites.

Prediction: Capital, 53-52

Week 11: Tuesday Night Hoops

Week 11: Tuesday Night Hoops

Tuesday night brings us several rivalry games on the watch list. We highlight ones to watch.

Playoff Implications

Mayfield (7-12, 0-1) vs No. 24 Las Cruces (10-9, 1-1): Both teams are still considered bubble teams right now and every win only helps; every loss puts them in jeopardy. Mayfield struggles on the road going 2-6 while Las Cruces is 3-2 at home. Both teams are evenly matched up with a young roster but the match-up you want to see is the battle between rising stars in sophomore guard Markus Collins (Las Cruces) vs junior guard Ismael Holguin (Mayfield).
X-Factor: Bulldawgs (backcourt) vs Mayfield (frontcourt). Similar styles of play but Mayfield with Jay Arnold in the paint needs to be the X-factor for Mayfield to win.
Pick: Mayfield by 2 (*Upset)

Manzano (5-12, 0-1) vs Sandia (7-7, 1-0): Sandia still seems the favorite in this district but the Monarchs took the first match-up between the two programs. Sandia has Caleb Wroten coming into his own and he will be the focus if the Matadors want to win this one. Manzano has some good players in their frontcourt as well but experience might come into play.
X-Factor: Matadors have won five of their last six games and do better when the score is low. Both teams averaging around 54 points per game. Sandia starts off slow and the Monarchs need to contain them in the second half when they have runs.

Pick: Sandia by 8.

Seed Game

Los Lunas vs No. 22 Belen (12-3, 2-0): The battle for Valencia County. The Eagles are the better offense teams scoring around 61 points per game. Los Lunas the better defensive team. The Tigers have Martin Trujillo who is continuing to play better and place himself among the best players in the state.
X-Factor: Not allowing Los Lunas to keep the game low. For the Tigers don't allow them to start the game quick. They have good first quarters that could dicate the game, the Tigers can play catch-up the entire game.
Pick: Tigers by 3

Rapid Fire

Cibola vs Rio Rancho: Both are playoff teams but who gets a home game.

Cleveland vs Volcano Vista: The Hawks need a win, but can they contain the depth of the Storm Slowing it down might hurt them against the Storm.

Alamogordo vs Hobbs: Scary game for Hobbs as Alamogordo has too good of a roster to be in position to miss the playoffs. Hobbs can't afford another bad loss.

Top Five Sophomore Guards

1. Anthony Chavez 2018 PG Valley High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Anthony Chavez is already being talked about as one of the top players in the state of New Mexico. Right now averaging 13 points and 2.4 assists per game along with 1 steal per contest.

2. Markus Collins 2018 PG/SG Las Cruces High School (Las Cruces, NM)

Collins is having a very good 2016 portion of the season where he has went off for 29 points against La Cueva and 23 the following night. Only 5'5 the shooting guard creates his own shot and can knock down the wide open shot automatically with confidence.

3. Jayden Philips 2018 SG Cleveland High School (Rio Rancho, NM)

Jayden is one of the better athletes in the bunch that is suited better as a wing or off guard. He could develop into a solid guard and become a great slasher.

4. Diego Ortega 2018 G Atrisco Heritage Academy (Albuquerque, NM)

Ortega is another guard that is starting to play well as the season develops. Scoring 5.6 points per contest, 2 rebounds and 1 assist per game.

5. Elijah Herron 2018 G/W La Cueva High School (Albuquerque, NM)

The stretch guard is another player that could develop into one of the top overall players in the state of New Mexico. No numbers posted for La Cueva but you can tell by his play that he could become a solid wing and overall contributor.

6. Keyshawn Webb G Highland HS (Albuquerque, NM) - Playing very well lately, had 13 points last week. Averages around 5 ppg game.

6A-4A: Hot or Cold in January

6A-4A: Hot or Cold in January

We are still a week or two away from truly sitting all 16-teams at big dance table The bus to the big dance still has a few seats available in certain classifications but many have been reserved. Today, we look at the temperature for those teams that did well in January.

Oh yeah we left off those teams that have been hot the entire season.

Hot: Winners of January

(4A) Pojoaque Valley: I hope plenty of you didn't sell too quick on the Elks in late December (I know some of you did, I seen the coaches poll). Well, it's okay I did at the point and I regret it after I was really high on them. It was December 29th and the Elks had lost 2 of 3 games and didn't look to be playing well. Fast forward to the end of January and they are on a 7-game winning streak and a perfect (6-0) in the month of January. The Elks are now
(15-3, 0-0) on the season.

(4A) Bloomfield: The Bobcats (11-6, 2-0) also from 3A basketball with Pojoaque Valley and maybe not as red hot as the Elks but they are warm. The Bobcats are winners of 5 of their last 6 games. Right now they are fighting for a Top-8 seed as maybe one team from 1-4A gets a nod for a slot/home game. A (64-37) victory over a tough Shiprock team was the eye opener.

(4A) Sandia Prep: It is likely that no other team is boosting their stock better than the Sundevils of Sandia Prep. They are (9-9, 2-0 District) on the season but an impressive showing this month might have the bridesmaid of the Final Four for many years return to form after a season in which they missed the State Tournament. The (55-34) win over St. Michael's in week 11 was the impressive victory that has stock holders buying low.

(5A) Los Lunas: The Tigers have played one of the stronger of schedules this season and it will pay off during District play - it already has. Right now they sit at (11-8, 3-0 District) and on a four game winning streak. The win that will stick out to all of is the win over Centennial to open District play. They followed it up with a win over Belen on Tuesday.

(5A) Goddard: Many have been skeptical of the Rockets being in the Top-10 rankings. Yes, they started hot and came into the season with plenty of hype but for those who refuse to buy on them, remember that they are barely coming into form. Top guard Noah Waide missed some games but they are playing well now and a team to watch in the post season. They are currently on a 6-game winning streak and went 6-1 in January to this point.

(5A) Moriarty:
Maybe, they didn't have the hottest of January's but a warm one and I feel they deserve the love. Why? Well, Miyamura helped in that temperature rise with Miyamura beating Piedra Vista on Tuesday night of week 11. The Pintos also get a DC win over Portales that helps in the State Tournament criteria. They are currently on a three game winning streak and have a record of (8-9, 0-0) with two non-district games left.

(6A) La Cueva: The Bears have been, in the words of a POPular song "Cause you're hot then you're cold. You're yes then you're no.'' (Okay, I just did a Katy Perry song). The Bears are not hot or yes to the state tournament with a 4-game win streak. What helps in the win streak is a bubble game against Mayfield and Manzano. They are (7-10, 2-0) with a tie for the District title in their grasp.

(6A) Las Cruces: The other LCHS (Las Cruces) team on the HOT might look a bit contradictory as they suffered a blow to their resume on Tuesday night of week 11 to, then, bubble OUT Mayfield. However, this is the resume for January for the Bulldawgs; 5-2 record and had a 6-game winning streak. Right now they are (10-10, 1-2) on the season and look to be an IN team but they can't suffer a bad loss from here on out.

(6A) Carlsbad: I initially typed Sandia into this slot but the January resume for Carlsbad is better looking and the temperature a bit hotter. The Cavemen (15-6, 1-0) lost some followers mid-way in the season but if you have came crawling back with your tail between your legs, feel free to join me. They are winners of 6 straight games. The Cavemen had a taste last season and I think this team is/should be/will be one that you see play on the Thursday or Saturday in mid-March. (You know those days).

Cold: 3 Teams That Have Hurt Their Resume

(4A) Portales
: The Rams do have a solid win over Silver. However, the Rams have losses to Robertson, Lovington, St. Mikes and Mesilla Valley that hurt the validity of them being a 'contender'. Their resume is a bit convoluted right now and several losses could have them getting a 6-10 seed. Closer to the 6 though before you say that their is no other team that will jump into the top-8. 4A is better this season in terms of parity near the top but still maybe 6-7 strong teams to make for a fun state tournament.

(5A) Piedra Vista: We sort of reaching for a team on the cold list for January but ended with the Panthers who suffered a loss that could knock them out of the home game in the first round conversation. They took a hit losing to Miyamura in week 11 and overall in January they are 2-3 against 5A competition. The Bernalillo win helps, but only in the bubble conversation and losses to Belen and Miaymura could likely knock them out of the Top-8 for good.

(6A) Volcano Vista: The Hawks have three wins in January but only one helps come State Tournament criteria and I am huge on what have you done for me lately. For the Hawks sake they need to hope that Hobbs is a DC for their resume. Other than that Volcano Vista is 3-8 in January and riding a 4-game losing streak. Also, 1-7 in the last 8-games and on the down trend. Overall they are (7-11, 0-3) on the season and a bubble team right now.

Week 11: Thursday Night

Scores

Bloomfield 60, Thoreau 34
Hondo Valley 70, Valley Christian 30
Kirtland 67, Wingate 60
La Cueva 77, Eldorado 72 (OT)
Manzano 58, Eldorado 56
Shiprock 75, Zuni 55
St Pius X 58, Valencia 48
Tucucmari 70, Clayton 45
Tularosa 53, Magdalena 47

What Does It Mean
  1. La Cueva tied with Sandia at (3-0) in the lead for District 2-6A with the win. Who gets the auto?
  2. Kirtland Central (7-12, 3-0) and Bloomfield (12-6, 3-0) tied for the lead in District 1-4A. Does KC get into the playoffs again after few wins in non-district play.
  3. 3A Contender/Pretender: Tucumcari thumps Clayton moves to 1-0 in District play.
Top Players

  • Cameron Cauley, Manzano scores 18 points in the win over Highland.
  • Emilio Arellano, St. Pius X scores 36 of St. Pius X 58 in the win over Valencia.

Small School Division: Collision To The End

Small School Division: Collision To The End
Joshua J Grine

District play will start around the state of New Mexico and we take a look at the action that has happened outside of 6A-4A basketball. We now take a look at the top contenders and players.

Top Contenders

Lordsburg (15-1, 3A Basketball): The Mavericks have returned the major contributors from their last three teams and they have one loss to one of the top teams in Cliff in a one-point loss. They opened the season with 15-game win streak as the last undefeated team to lose. One of the things with the Mavericks is they can shoot and score. They are averaging 64 points a game, ranking them among the most for per game.

Texico (11-4, 3A Basketball): The Wolverines are one team that you see here each season and only four losses, 1 to a 3A team, deserve more attention. This is why: Texico has a different type of team from other 3A favorites in that they have the size factor. This team won't explode for big scoring games like other 3A teams but if they get the game to slow down they can beat any team in the paint and have shown to be solid on defense.

Mesilla Valley Christian (9-7, 3A Basketball): You nay be looking at the SonBlazers record and wondering why they are ranked 3rd and mentioned here. Well, this is the reason their record won't tell the full story. They have losses against top 5A, 4A teams or ranked opponents in general. The 3A defending champs are a team that also has a signature win over Portales but could be lacking more of the signature wins but the win over Portales could be better than most on the list.

Mora (12-4, 2A Basketball): I really like this Mora team this season and the depth of the starting line-up. They have three players averaging double figures with Casimiro Fresquez (19.3 ppg) flying under the radar. Santiago Laumbauch (11.6) and Emmerick Martinez (10.0 ppg) create solid second and third options.

Hondo Valley (16-2, 1A Basketball): Most would be expecting the Cliff Cowboys in this section, right? Well, I have to say that the team I like is the Eagles of Hondo Valley. Head coach James Voight teams play extremely well in transition and the Dexter team he won a title with put up points in a hurry playing small ball. This team is averaging 65 points a game and could be the least talked about team that could win it all. Voight is one of the top rising coaches in the state. The Eagles are riding an 8-game win streak right now and will likely have a top seed.

Surprise Team

Navajo Prep. The Eagles made, what could be one of the best hires this off-season, in bringing in veteran Rick Hoerner. The Eagles are (14-5, 1-0) on the season and have a signature win over 4A Bloomfield and another top 3A team in Dulce.

Potential Mr. Basketball Candidates

It would break the mold as we have yet to have a small school division player win the top award given to a player. We have had around 1 or 2 finalist but we could see a few this season.

Raymond Saucedo/Jacob Esquivel (Lordsburg). Both players have had outstanding games and some games they both have gone for 20 points a piece, for the games we have. Hopefully, we can get season averages before the finalist are announced but for now they have the games to justify a mid-season recognition.

John Paul Garcia (Tucumcari). JP has gone for 30 points, a 40 point game early on and a few near double-doubles. We don't have averages here as well which could hinder a finalist award but for now he is likely one, if not, the top player in small school division basketball.

Dalton Privett (Dora). At 20 points per game and 8 rebounds per contest, you have to take notice for the season Privett is having at this point. The Coyotes post season run, like others, will play factor in his chances.

Other to Keep Any Eye On: Casimiro Fresquez (Mora), Francis Mulert y Castillo (Santa Fe Prep), Jorell Mirabal (Magdalena), Cade Barnard (Melrose), Holt Shelley (Cliff).
