Week 14: Weekend Wire

Week 14: Weekend Wire
Joshua J Grine

Today, we take a look at our Top-8 games to watch this weekend. We also predict the outcomes for the must see games.

#1. West Las Vegas (19-5) at Pojoaque Valley (19-6), Fri, 7p: The District 2-4A race is one of the most competitive and the regular season champion won't be claimed until this weekend. Right now, West Las Vegas is 4-1, Pojoaque Valley is 3-2, Robertson is 3-2. If Robertson beats Taos and Pojoaque Valley beats West they all three tie for the DC. Pojoaque Valley known for playing solid defense struggled in the second half after a lead in the first match up between the teams.

Prediction: Pojoaque Valley 59, West Las Vegas 57 (OT)

#2. Carlsbad (18-7) at Hobbs (15-7), Fri, 7p: Another games with the District Regular Season Championship on the line in this contest. The Cavemen dropped the first contest at home and a win would help their seed in the state tournament along with being a Co-DC. They will need to play better on the offensive side as a down third quarter hurt them last time. Hobbs has limited opponents offensively during district play at 54 points per game, ten below their average on the season at 64.

Prediction: Carlsbad 58, Hobbs 57

#3. Rio Rancho (15-10) at Cleveland (19-6), Fri, 7p: The Rio Rancho Rams and Cleveland Storm will be in a battle for another classic game. The Storm have some athletes and the Rams will need to limit touches to Marcus Williams. Also, Clay Patterson will need is duo Juan Hurt to have a big game. When the two go off they have success.

Prediction: Cleveland 65, Rio Rancho 63

#4. Highland (8-15) at Volcano Vista (10-13), Fri, 7p: The "Fringe Game" of the night is between the brothers - Greg (Volcano) and Danny (Highland) Brown. Highland wins and they could be in discussion for the state tournament Volcano Vista likely a lock but a loss still hurts.

Prediction: Highland 44, Volcano Vista 40

#5. Tucumcari (16-5) at Santa Rosa (17-8), Sat, 5:30p: The teams have split this season, with the Rattlers taking the first district match-up 81-78. Expect this to be state tournament atmosphere with a packed facility. Next level prospect John Paul Garcia will take on a Lions team that has been developing for a few years now. Joseph Esquibel a junior guard is one to watch.

Prediction: Tucumcari 66, Santa Rosa 59

#6. Goddard (15-9) at Artesia (10-12), Fri, 7p:
A seed-to-fringe game as both could be either looking for 10-16 seed. Artesia might be the team that needs this contest more than Goddard as they are on the fringe of missing the state tournament. Goddard as a well balanced big and guard. Artesia strengths rely in Ethan Duff-Just Houghtaling need to play like it's their final game. Goddard can score, Artesia needs to limit their production.

Prediction: Artesia 60, Goddard 59

#7. Kirtland Central (12-13) at Bloomfield (18-6), Sat, 6p: The Broncos are the team that plays well late into the season. Bloomfield is looking for an outright District Regular season championship. The Bobcats and Broncos will be a classic game in the northwest district that could be a game that requires extra minutes. Brian Dowdy of Kirtland Central looking to solidify himself as one of the best players in the classification.

Prediction: Bloomfield 58, Kirtland Central 54

#8. Centennial (19-5) at Sandia (13-9), Sat, 2p: A rare 6A/5A cross-classification game with 5A Centennial traveling north to Albuquerque to play Sandia. The Matadors seem to have the advantage with the inside play of Calen Wroten however a stifling Hawks pressure defense could cause issues to the Matadors guards.

Prediction: Centennial 62, Sandia 53

Today, we take a look around the state and continue looking at the brackets and different views.

The members of the NMAA selection committee don't have an easy job this season. They will be wrong along with being right. Let's hope they are more right than wrong. I argued about district strength (I hope they discuss this), will they defend their brackets? When you see the NCAA they let us know why they picked a certain way. Would be cool if they do but if not we try to shed some light.

6A Fringe - 3 Spots, 5 Teams

14. La Cueva (10-13, 5-2): The Bears have the advantage as a District Runner-Up. In most cases I am arguing that yes both the DC and Runner-Up should get the nod. However, this might be the year that you could argue they shouldn't. I won't and here is why of these 'Fringe Teams'' they deserve to be IN. They have the win over Valley, yes I would argue the time of a win, but I won't. They also have wins over Volcano Vista (IN), Mayfield and Highland. If they beat Sandia tonight they might argue for a better seed outside 13-16.

15. Santa Fe (9-15, 2-5): The Demons play in the toughest district in the state, they have better wins and bubble win over Las Cruces. I think they have done enough to deserve a slot at this point in the season. Like mentioned I think their 'rank' based on numbers would be higher if they got to play in District 3-6A or 2-6A.

16. Las Cruces (14-12, 4-4): One of the better records in the bunch. They also have some solid wins but also some questionable losses in regards to this bunch listed. The reason that I have them as the 16th team IN is Santa Fe's resume a bit better. Las Cruces in over Highland because of the district argument. Might be a situation when you use the District Tournament as an argument.

Highland (8-15, 3-5): Might be in a situation when you need to win the district tournament. Or a win against Volcano Vista tonight would give you argument to the likes of Santa Fe, maybe pushing Las Cruces OUT. The Rio Grande win helps and might be the sleeper on a two game win streak.

Mayfield (14-12, 3-4): Beat Onate and we will talk. I have given praise all season long. Like the direction but more of a beat Onate tonight.

5A - The Fight For Number 3. The Co-DC's and Farmington

3. Espanola Valley (18-7, 5-2): If they win tonight they are Co-DC with Capital. Have a DC win over Sandia from 6A and another against Roberston. Capital only has Los Lunas. They will also have Silver win as a DC in their conversation. They must beat Bernalillo tonight and why not place them here.

4. Farmington (21-4, 7-0): Might be a surprise to most and not a favorite pick at 3 but they are an outright champion. Their district strength is weaker but Gallup as your DRU is not bad league.

5. Centennial (19-5, 7-1): Another Co-DC that could say we are the 3 and they would be right. They actually might have the better resume of the bunch because of the Roswell win. Say what you want that win if the best win of the teams list here. Co-DC is the only argument, not a good one but for feature sake, is why they are behind Farmington.

6. Capital (22-4, 6-2): Not outright DC right now, Bernalillo loss hurts but still likely 3 over 4. Somewhat similar with Farmington minus the win over Los Lunas.

7. Los Lunas (16-9, 7-1): Centennial the Co-DC is above the Co-DC from 2-6A so gave the strength to them. Most will likely throw criteria at me (do it) but I say they deserve it a bit more at 7.

4A - The Side Without Hope Christian and Confusing Resumes

2. West Las Vegas (19-5, 4-1), 3. Pojoaque Valley (19-6, 3-2), 4. Robertson (21-4, 3-2): This District should be rewarded with the 2-4 slot. Argue what you want I don't see how they are not here.

5. Portales (15-9, 5-0): Might be able to argue into the 2-4 slot but no higher than 4 so no true difference at 5. The case into 3rd would be. DC wins over Tucumcari, Silver and being a DC themselves. The bad thing about the end is they play in the worst District.

6. Silver (17-7, 8-0): Good team, maybe a tad over hyped by me this preseason but don't be surprised if I take them as a final four team still. I like the team as a sleeper.

6. Bloomfield (18-6, 9-0): They are a DC, ranked high in 4A but nothing else on their resume truly says higher than 6. Might be 7 to be honest.

Grine Picks From The Seeds Above

Final Four

6A - Onate, Cibola, Sandia and Carlsbad:

Surprised? Yup. Sandia the sleeper. No Valley, Cleveland or Albuquerque High? Yup. Valley playing well lately but maybe upset. Cleveland shaky last March against Sandia - Carlsbad might be the sequel. If they beat Hobbs tonight that is if not they will have a higher seed.
How the bracket looks FYI: 1. Onate, 2. Cibola, 3. Valley 4. Cleveland 5. Carlsbad 6. Hobbs 7. Albuquerque 8. Rio Grande 9 Rio Rancho 10 Gadsden 11 Sandia 12 Atrisco 13 Volcano. 14 La Cueva 15 Santa Fe 16 Las Cruces

5A - Roswell, Centennial, Capital and Grants:

Capital might be listed as a 6 seed above but might play into their favor - Que No? Well, fun to see the bracket like that. Roswell, Grants should be their in March. Centennial has a coach with the jewelry, and Capital does too.

4A - Hope, Robertson, West Las Vegas, Silver

Robertson is the best team to beat Hope. Silver sneaky 6 seed. West Las Vegas has Bustos.

Grine: Streaking Into the Post Season
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

Heading into the post season the team at NMPreps.com will bring you non-stop coverage and features into March.

Today, we take a look at the teams who haven't lost in over 10-games. Some teams have yet to lose in the 2016 along with every class being represented minus 3A (Lordsburg close at 9).

Onate of 6A basketball does play in a weak district but within this streak that leads back to December 30th, a loss to Del Valle (Texas), has a pair of Top-10 6A wins in Albuquerque (Jan. 15th) and Carlsbad (January 9th). The Knights will likely see their streak improve to 15 with a District Tournament Championship and into March.

Looking into 5A we have a pair of programs that are on a win-streak with the Grants Pirates winning 11 in a row and the Centennial Hawks at 10. The Pirates have wins against Capital and Espanola Valley during their current streak. The Centennial Hawks play in one of the better 5A Districts and a big win over Los Lunas has them as Co-District Champions.

If I did a ranking (you know we love ranking everything) I might go with the 2A Melrose Buffaloes and a 10-game win streak with wins over Santa Rosa, Mora and Springer. The Buffaloes are the likely favorite to win the entire thing in 2A has one of the most underrated players in 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Cade Barnard.

Active Streaks 10 games or more
16 - Hondo Valley Eagles
14 - Onate Knights
13 - Hope Christian
11 - Grants Pirates
11 - Bloomfield
10 - Centennial
10 - Melrose Buffaloes

Valley Home Court Advantage?

I just read the journal article on the Valley RG game. It said Valley has to "host" the district tournament championship and the first round state playoff game elsewhere due to the commencement of a construction project! That sucks for them! Work hard to host a couple of important games (state more so than DT) and have to go to neutral court! That could be the first round upset alert!
