I normally don't worry about them too much and by the end of district some stuff straightens out, but is anyone else confused by them at this point. In 3A boys they keep changing dramatically for some teams and not for others and I can't figure out why. I guess some games are being considered poor wins. Just using us for example, last Thursday we were ranked 7th with a 4.5 rating with an 11-5 record. We win two district games, move to 13-5 and our rating drops to 2.8 and we stay 7th. There is a team ahead of us who we beat head to head, lost 2 games recently and though their rating also dropped, they are still ranked ahead of us. Every teams rating dropped this week, even teams who didn't lose a game. Curious to me. Is this happening in any other classes?

Preseason Rankings: No. 35 La Cueva Bears

The 2015-2016 season has officially started and today we start our countdown of the top 50 programs in New Mexico Big School Division (6A-4A).

More: Preseason Rankings Home | Rankings 72-51 | Preseason Preview Page

The La Cueva Bears enter the season after a (12-16, 5-3) season and state tournament appearance.

Overview: The Bears enter the season outside the Top-25 for the first time. The Bears have graduate plenty of top talent and gone are the days as favorite each year. The Bears had one of their worst seasons in program history and they graduated eight players off that team. The program likely continues their step back in a year that will have a pair of seniors in Simeon Moya (6-2/F) and Alejandro Ruiz (6-4/F). Ruiz averaged 6.5 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds, being the main option for the Bears this season in the paint.

Last Season
Record: 12-16, 5-3
Home Record: 5-4
Away Record: 3-7
Post Season: First Round, lost to Hobbs (77-55)
Points per game: 57.8 (1621)
Points against: 58.6 (1643)

Realistic Prediction: It's hard to imagine a program this solid to be ranked outside the top-25 and might be a situation that they rise quickly through the ranks but for now, after seeing them this summer it might be a situation where they miss the playoffs. Our prediction is a 10-14 win season again but they could be sitting at home for the state tournament this time around. They have great size returning but they replace several holes for a team that was 12-16 and could be a long season in Bear country.

District Champ: 60%
Playoff Team: 60%
Elite Eight: 20%
Final Four: 2%
Title Game: 1%

Returning Players: The Bears return some good size in a pair of bigs in the paint but will need to replace guard play. The backcourt only returns one player in Amarante Rhodes who averaged 1.7 points per game and it will have a handful of junior varsity players from a year ago.

Roster
Simeon Moya (F/2016)
Alejandro Ruiz (F/2016)
Amarante Rhodes (G/2017)
Thomas Jensen (F/2017)
