Who Should Be Ranked No. 1 for Week 6

Cleveland to Artesia; Rio Rancho to Hobbs

I strongly sense that Artesia is putting their heart into this season. They’re truly convinced that they’ve got the 5A state championship within their reach, as long as no major injuries occur. This season seems to revolve around the goal of surpassing Cleveland. Their closest attempt was in 2017 when they narrowly lost 56-49 against Cleveland.



This year, if they manage to beat Cleveland, it would be as delightful as the renowned dessert your grandma brings out after Sunday meals following church. To explain further, this dessert signifies their victory over Cleveland, while the main course stands for the 5A state championship.



Impressively, they’ve started the season with impressive wins against two 6A teams, Carlsbad and Hobbs, both times keeping their scores under 10 points. With such achievements, I’m very confident in their abilities, especially when playing at home. In my eyes, this Artesia team stands out as one of the most remarkable I’ve seen in quite some time.

Time: 7:00 PM

Preview: Volcano Vista enters week five looking for a rebound after suffering a 49-21 loss to third ranked La Cueva last week. Sandia enters the contest calling for respect after a 3-0 start to the season and get their first true test of the season. For the Volcano Vista Hawks it is top-ranked running back Alijah Gonzales leading from the backfield with 593 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on the season. The defense has a pair of players that could be the x-factor tonight in seniors Adam Jaramillo and Jace Anderson. Sandia's duo of Cruz Rivera (2024/QB) and Joey Harris (2025/WR) are quietly having a solid season for the offense. Luke Gonzales (2024) and Steve Quezada (2025) are new names and the difference maker tonight.

VALENCIA (2-1) AT SANTA TERESA (0-3)

Time: 7:00 PM

Preview: Nothing like a 3 and a half hour, 239 mile bus trip on a Thursday night. The 2-1 Valencia Jaguars traveling south to Santa Teresa looking to get back on the winning track. Valencia suffered their first loss of the season last week looking to build their playoff resume. Quarterback Aidan Harrington leads the Jaguars offense and will need to guide the offense tonight. Santa Teresa has struggled out the gate and despite being an underdog in the two opening games to Goddard and Lovington the loss last week to Cobre (34-12) hurt playoff hopes. They'll need to avoid another tonight against 4A Valencia. Jaxon Bowron (2023) leads the way for the Desert Warriors with 27 total tackles and 3 sacks on the season. This defense will need to guide the ST defense as they head into the second half of the season.
