Grine: The Mohs Hardness Scale
Welcome back, welcome back, weeeeeelcome back. Well, I haven't done my Mohs Hardness Scale since 2019 but that stops today just like my geology career (circa 2008 freshmen Geology 101 class). This feature will take a twist on the "contenders/pretenders" take. Others will regurgitate "grades", or "tiers" so this is just our take on the favorites to win state.

Week 6 New Mexico high School football rankings
This mineral hardness is a measure of its relative resistance to scratching. Here, for New Mexico high school football, it's our favorites to win the title and level against all teams in each class.
6A FOOTBALL
Diamond (Scale Number 10)
Group: Cleveland (6A), Artesia (5A), Roswell (5A)
Hardness: Diamonds are at the top of the scale. (6A) The defending champs suffered an upset loss last week losing their Top-25 ranking but the Storm will get healthy and continue as the favorite to win yet another 6A state championship. They've already beat the top two contenders (next group).
(5A) Artesia and Roswell. Do we need to add more? Rarely will we put two teams at a scale 10 but 5A football through five weeks is Artesia or Roswell.
Corundum (Scale Number 9)
Group: Centennial (6A), La Cueva (6A)
Hardness: The Hawks and Bears are without a doubt the two contenders against the Cleveland Storm. Centennial holds a slight edge over the La Cueva with their week three win over the Bears. This mineral can have different colors, and with it being a scale 9 it can scratch almost all other minerals. Expect one of the two in the title game.
Topaz (Scale Number 8)
Group: Volcano Vista (6A), Mayfield (5A)
Hardness: Topaz is a gemstone, in cut and polished form and known as "colorless". (6A) The Volcano Vista Hawks sit as the
fourth ranked team in 6A football and sit alone in this group. They are not quite corundum, they suffered a 49-21 loss to La Cueva but they are above the next group by about two touchdowns (they beat Sandia 30-14). Can the stud of Alijah Gonzales (RB/2024) bring color to a playoff run?
(5A) football does not have a scale 9 team and Mayfield (2-2) comes in at a scale 8. The Trojans and the two other 5A teams are hanging on to a top-25 ranking with the Trojans coming in at #23. The Trojans had some traction but a 44-7 loss to Las Cruces hurt their overall case.
Quartz (Scale Number 7)
Group: Sandia (6A), Deming (5A), Piedra Vista (5A)
Hardness: (6A) Perhaps the most unknown on the scale in terms of contenders is the Sandia Matadors. Right now, ranked 5th in the NMPreps Staff poll the Matadors at 3-1 are looking to maintain their position but the 30-14 loss to Volcano Vista didn't help their cause. Quartz exists in two forms and the Matadors hope to make a possible quarterfinals rematch against Volcano Vista in a different form.
(5A) Deming (#24) and Piedra Vista (#25) are the other 5A teams ranked in the top-25 for week six. Deming (3-2) is the favorite to be the fourth team in the semifinals. Piedra Vista (1-4) made things interesting defeating Goddard last week.
Orthoclase (Scale Number 6)
Group: Los Lunas (6A), Goddard (5A)
Hardness: Orthoclase you think granites. Are the Tigers in that group? Well, them and Sandia could be in the same conversation of next best team outside the top-four (those four get a bye game). The Tigers will roll this week (week 5 vs Valley) and improve their 3-2 record to 4-2 but losses to Roswell and La Cueva proved their level of hardness at 6.
(5A) The Goddard Rockets, much like the 6A team in this group, are hard to judge. They do have a key win over Deming (35-12) and perhaps should be ranked above team on this scale but a 21-7 loss last week has us scratching our heads.
Apatite (Scale Number 5)
Group: Farmington (6A), Los Alamos (5A), Valley (5A)
Hardness: The Farmington Scorpions (4-1) only loss on the season is to group 6 member Los Lunas, 40-22. The Scorpions are ranked No. 7/NMPreps 6A Team Rankings and will look to maintain positioning this week against Rio Rancho. Apatite is infrequently used as a gemstone.
(5A) Los Alamos (5-0) sits in the group with Artesia and Roswell as the last unbeaten squads in 5A football. The Hilltoppers are quietly a tough group that could win a game or two in the playoffs. Valley (3-1) has potential. Can they beat out LA for the DC this year?
Fluorite (Scale Number 4)
Group: West Mesa (6A), Rio Rancho (6A), Hobbs (6A), Gadsden (5A)
Hardness: A bigger group of teams fighting for what could be the final home game in the first round. Rio Rancho and Hobbs are evenly match but Hobbs owns the edge with a week five win. West Mesa answered a week five call beating Atrisco Heritage. We could see two of them matching up in the first round. Right now we have West Mesa as the 8-seed and Rio Rancho the 9-seed.
Week 6 Playoff Watch.
(5A) The Gadsden Panthers (4-1) suffered their second loss of the season last night to the hands of Goddard. They'll float around the 9-10 seed come playoff time with a district runner up finish (Deming is the favorite in that district).
Calcite (Scale Number 3)
Group: Atrisco Heritage (6A), Eldorado (6A), Las Cruces (6A), Alamogordo (6A)
Hardness: The official "bubble" group. No bubble is not on the mineral scale but this group has four teams fighting for the final two spots in the playoffs. Atrisco and Eldorado were the odd teams out but if they make the playoffs, both could keep a first round game close.
Gypsum (Scale Number 2)
Group: Clovis (6A) Carlsbad (6A), Albuquerque (6A), Manzano (5A), Highland (5A), Miyamura (5A)
Hardness: This group features teams in the 15-18 range. Also, known as the "finish the season strong" and build for 2024. Clovis and Albuquerque could finish as the District Runner Up in 5-6A. (5A) Manzano and Highland round out the top-12 in 5A football and could both reach the playoffs after missing it in 2022. Manzano had a key win over Belen to put them IN this post season. Miyamura is holding on to this scale spot but it could change in district play.
Talc (Scale Number 1)
Group: Santa Fe (6A), Cibola (6A), Capital (6A), Organ Mountain (6A), Belen (5A), Santa Teresa (5A), Del Norte (5A), Chaparral (5A)
Hardness: Talc is the softest mineral. Cibola and Organ Mountain remain without a win. Santa Fe High is the best of the group and could get 2/3 wins on the season, moving forward they could be a 2/3 next season. In 5A football the group of winless teams -- Belen, Santa Teresa, Del Norte, and Chaparral -- are a combined 0-19 through five games.
