Announcement welcoming back Kaitlyn Glass

Another good announcement to make as we enter the 2015 season is that we are bringing back Kaitlyn Glass to help with even more sports coverage. She's a two-time state champ at Sandia Prep (Soccer Goalie), has contributed to our team on the football, basketball, soccer, and photography front. This year she'll be leading our Soccer Rankings, soccer coverage, and also helping on the sports photography front.

She has a tremendous work ethic!

Volcano/Los Lunas Recap
Login to view embedded media Login to view embedded media Login to view embedded media
Recap:
Volcano vista looked good on offense with Quarterback Josh Williams throwing three touchdowns, two went to receiver Allan Rodriguez. Tight end Josh Barton made a nice snag over the middle of the field. Los Lunas defense had trouble defending the pass, but fared better than expected against the run. Los Lunas first offensive possession didn't create a lot of big plays, mainly because Volcano Vista was much bigger up front. Quarterback Anthony Sanchez is an athlete for sure, really, really liked him and they also had a fullback by the name of Dominic Mariano that impressed. Los Lunas Junior Running Back OMaury Samuels did hit a big run for a touchdown from 45 yards out, then limped off the sidelines. He never returned, looked like his hamstring is bothering him. The run was ridiculous as he started up the middle and made a few cuts up the field for a touchdown.

Players That Stood Out
Josh Williams - QB - Volcano Vista
Allan Rodriguez - WR - Volcano Vista
Josh Barton - TE - Volcano Vista
Nick Mourning - DL - Volcano Vista
Brian Parks - LB - Volcano Vista
Anthony Sanchez - QB - Los Lunas
Dominic Mariano - RB - Los Lunas
O'Maury Samuels - RB - Los Lunas

2015 4A Preseason Rankings
Joshua J. Grine

Welcome to the 2015 Volleyball season. We are about one month away from the first game of the season, APS schools look to have an opening night of September 1st, 2015. During the month of August we will highlight our 2015 Team Rankings, Player Rankings and look into the season.

Defending Champs Looking To Repeat

1. Ruidoso
2. Hope Christian
3. Silver
4. Sandia Prep
5. Portales

The Ruidoso Warriors come into the 2015 season at no surprise as the No. 1 (NMPreps.com Team Rankings) team in 4A volleyball. The Warriors finished 2014 at (19-5, 5-0) on their way to the blue trophy. The team is a heavy favorite with six-foot-three junior Lia Mosher (OH) back for her junior season. Andi Harrelson (2016/MB) is also back for a talented team. The Warriors are a team to know for the next two years as the 2014 squad had seven players from the 2017 class.

Only graduating three players the Hope Christian Huskies come into the season ranked No. 2 on our ranking of all 24 teams in 4A volleyball. The Huskies went (15-8, 7-1) last season and a top seed in the state tournament last season before being upset in the Elite Eight to eventual champ Ruidoso. Alexa Petty (2017/DS) and Abby Williams (2016/OH) are the two players that will look to lead the Huskies to a 2015 title contender.

A dangerous team to keep an eye on this season is the Silver Colts who went an impressive 17-5, 8-0 last season playing in the 2014 Final Four falling to Ruidoso. The Colts are lead by Megan Mattie (2016/MB) and Asia Morales (2016/S) in a loaded 2016 class for the Colts. Many consider the Colts the favorite to take the title behind that much talent int he senior class.

One of the youngest teams in the class and what could become a serious "dark horse" contender to win the entire thing for the next three years. The Sandia Prep Sundevils welcome back seven players from the sophomore class. Catherine Kelly (2018/OH) will be a common name to each program in 4A for the next three years. Kiersten Huitt (2016/MB) and another talented underclassman Camryn Nelson (2018/OH) will create this dominating trio for the 2015 season.

Graduating only three players from the (10-14, 3-3), Final Four team from 2014 the Portales Rams come into the 2015 season ranked No. 5. Six-foot-one, Kambrey Blakey (2016/OH) a talent across the board will be the leader of the Rams this season.

Rounding Out the Top 10

6. West Las Vegas
7. Bosque
8. Hatch Valley
9. Pojoaque Valley
10. Kirtland Central

The West Las Vegas Dons (No. 6 NMPreps.com Team Rankings) welcome back 12 players to a talented team that went (18-5, 7-0) last season. At, No. 7 the Bobcats of Bosque welcome back 2017 MB Sarah Shibuya to a team that will look to knock off any team any given night. Hatch Valley (No. 8) only graduate three players from the 14-9, 6-2 team from 2014. Taylor Mitchell (2017/OH) will be the name to know for the Bears after having a successful campaign in 2014.

The Pojoaque Valley Elkettes (No. 9) are lead by Rachel Garcia (2017) to build off their 11-12, 3-3 season. The Kirtland Central Broncos from the Northwest corner finish the Top-10 for the 2015 preseason. The Broncos finished the season (16-6, 8-2) with a state tournament birth in 2014. The Broncos graduated only three players and will look to be threat come state tournament time.

No. 11- No. 24

11. St. Michael's
12. Cobre
13. Robertson
14. Hot Springs
15. Shiprock

Most teams in this range graduated around half of their roster but welcome back experience and could crack the top-10 at any point this season. Ashlea Lujan (2018/Robertson HS/S) will be a name to know in this bunch as a dark horse in their district.

The Back Nine

16. Wingate
17. Santa Fe Indian
18. Taos
19. Bloomfield
20. Thoreau
21. Socorro
22. Zuni
23. East Mountain

Note: New Mexico Military Institute did not play in their designated district (4-4A) last season and believed to be an independent team.

Feature: District 2-5A Preseason Preview

#1. LOS ALAMOS HILLTOPPERS
Last Season Record: 13-11, 6-2
Last Season District Finish: 2nd Place

Quick Hit: The Hilltoppers to some surprise are the preseason favorites to win District 2-5A. The Hilltoppers return Brianna Montano (2016/OH), Sierra Foley (2016/OH) and Samantha Melton (2016/S) to a team that only graduated one player off the Elite Eight team from 2014. This could be a serious contender in 2015 for a Final Four or title game appearance.

The biggest question regarding the Hilltoppers: The Hilltoppers have everything you could ask for in a team but can they overcome the defending DC Espanola Valley Sundevils.

#2. ESPANOLA VALLEY SUNDEVILS
Last Season Record:
19-4, 8-0
Last Season District Finish: 1st Place

Quick Hit: The Sundevils had a stellar 2014 season on their way to an Elite Eight showing, falling to eventual state champion Centennial High School. They graduate four players from last years squad but welcome back experience that could propel them to another successful campaign. Celina Naranjo (2016/S), Raylynn Quintana (2017/RS) and Kaitlyn Romero (2016/OH) are the three names to become familiar with on this squad.

The biggest question regarding the Espanola:
They lost a stud in Salazar last season and will need someone to lead this team in the crunch.Do they have that player?

#3 DEL NORTE KNIGHTS
Last Season Record:
6-20, 2-6
Last Season District Finish: 4th Place

Quick Hit: The Knights won games that they should have last season but couldn't find the right rhythm to pull wins in District outside of Capital. The Knights graduate four player from last season including two captains that might have them struggling early on. However, they have several returning prospects that could have this team on the bubble for a tournament bid. Chira Noce (2017), Jeri Garcia (2016) and Kaylee Henderson (2018) is the trio that hopes this is the team to reckon with as a dark horse. Nicole Wright (2016/OH) another prospect with the chances of battling for DPOY consideration.

The biggest question regarding the Knights:
They have promising prospects returning but are they ready to take this program to the next level?

#4 BERNALILLO SPARTANS
Last Season Record:
8-12, 4-4
Last Season District Finish: 3rd Place

Quick Hit: The Spartans will look to battle out of the district cellar this season after graduating half the roster off an 8-win team. The Spartans will need to look for go-to players or it could be another long season for the Spartans. They will have five seniors to be on the 2015 team but it's question who will be the players to watch.

The biggest question regarding the Spartans:
They replace a lot and might be a long season ahead for them. Do they have young talent to step up immediately?

#5 CAPITAL JAGUARS
Last Season Record:
2-16, 0-8
Last Season District Finish: 5th Place

Quick Hit: The Jaguars found two wins over Farmington and Robertson but it was a long season for the Jaguars. Some good news to shed light on is the fact they have two seniors ready to step up and improve off last season. Alexa Vasquez (2016) and Kayla Renders (2016) are hoping this becomes a promising direction for this program.

The biggest question regarding the Jaguars:
The two players return with experience, do they have depth to help them dig out of the cellar?

Feature: 3A, 2A & 1A Preseason Preview (Team Rankings)

3A-1A: 2015 SMALL SCHOOL PRESEASON PREVIEW

Goooood morning, it's August 15th and school is either starting around the state of New Mexico or has started. Today, we take a look at the final run down of our 2015 preseason rankings for volleyball in New Mexico.

3A: Texico The Overwhelming Favorite

The Wolverines basically walked to the 2014 3A title going an impressive (23-1, 6-0), dropping only a single game to 6A Santa Fe High early in the season. Currently, they are riding a 21-game winning streak that had them almost dominating each match (9-1) in the 2014 State Tournament. Brianna Reyna (2016/OH) and Audrey Wren (2016/S) are two players, regardless of classification, that have proven that they could play with any team that steps on the court with them. Reyna, comes from a talent in her own household and will be a special prospect to watch throughout the 2015 campaign.

The Next Tier

2. Eunice
3. Navajo Pine
4. Santa Rosa
5. Desert Academy

Yes, the Wolverines are in a league of their own right now. However, don't bet the house on the Wolverines just yet the voice of a Eunice fan (hypothetically). The Eunice Cardinals went 16-8 last season along with playing in the Final Four. They return the entire roster outside of one play who graduated. Kennede Caperton (2016/OH) and M'lee Vinson (2016/OH-S) are hoping to make believers of the Cardinals as legit contenders.

The 2014 runner-up Navajo Prep Eagles enter the season No. 3 after going 20-3, 8-0 last season. They return seven players from a talented team a season ago and hope to make sure they stay at the top of the classification. They have had an impressive resume the last eight years having deep runs in the postseason. Two seniors in Jasmine Coleman and Lashauntai Adams will be the total focus point carrying this team to the promise land.

Yvonne Guiterrez (MB/2016), Mikayla Garnand (OH/2018) and Sharmaine Benally (L/2017) hope to make believers of the Santa Rosa Lions. They will look to build of a 15-7, 7-0 season that resulted in a state tournament birth in 2014. The surprise team that will be in the mix is the Wildcats who return 9-players to 15-10, 6-2 team a year back. The three names we hear about for this squad is Rachel Stumbo (2017/MH), Rebecca Soifer (2017/OH) and Mikayla Bohlman (2019/MH).

Next Up, The Young Guns

6. Laguna-Acoma
7. Dexter
8. Cuba
9. Tularosa
10. Mesilla Valley

The Laguna-Acoma Hawks went 14-10, 6-1 last season and welcome back what will be a dominate four prospects for the next two years. Talia Paytiamo (OPP/2017), Kaitlin Lucero (OH/2017), Mikaela Vallejos (OH/2017) and Autumn Smith (OPP/2017) create a team that the folks in New Laguna will love to support.

The Dexter Demons (No. 7) roll in next with a talent of sophomores who all experience varsity as freshmen. This will be a deep team for three more years, they finished 12-10, 3-5 last season. Will have to battle with a talented district. The Cuba Rams (15-5, 5-2) has their own trio that hopes to jump into the next bracket of top teams with Sydney Cayaditto (2016), Paige Sam (2016) and Mariah Maestas (2017).

Two juniors will lead the Wildcats of Tularosa in 2015. Gracie Hooten (MB/2017) and Cassie Vickery (MB/2017) will be the duo to carry the Wildcats for two more years after a successful sophomore campaigns. Shania Gililand (S/2016) is another name to know for the Cats. Another 2017 duo in Kara Foreman (MB) and Hannah Nunley (MB) round out the top-10 this preseason for the Mesilla Valley Christian SonBlazers who went (9-13, 4-2) last season.

The Rest With the Sprint

11. Tucumcari
12. Santa Fe Prep
13. Rehoboth Christian
14. Clayton
15. Pecos
16. Estancia
17. Dulce
18. Crownpoint
19. Lordsburg
20. Loving
21. Monte Del Sol
22. Raton
23. Capitan
24. Tohatchi
25. Newcomb
26. Native American Community Academy

2A: Two To Tango

1. Meslrose
2. Ramah
3. Tatum
4. Fort Sumner
5. Mora

The Melrose Buffaloes (No. 1) and the defending champion Ramah Mustangs enter the season No. 1 and No. 2. By some surprise we flipped roles from the final game last season. The Buffaloes who went 17-6, 5-1 last season enter as the top team in New Mexico in 2A. The graduate two players and welcome back a solid trio in Addisen Dial (OH/2016), Ember Woods (OH/2016) and Taylor Bostwick (MH/2016).

Don't sleep on the reigning champs though as Jordyn Lewis (OH/2016) and Taea Hill (MH/2016) will be out to prove us wrong. These two are two of the best players in 2A and will look to defend their title.

Tatum enters at the No. 3 spot, returning the entire roster minus three who graduated from the 17-6 season. Paris Allred (MH/2016) will look to lead the Fort Sumner Vixens this season. The Vixens only graduate three from a 11-12 team. Representing the north is the Mora Rangerettes who went 16-7, 10-1 and played in the Elite Eight last season. They might be the surprise team in the top five over a top team in Logan but they only lost two and welcome back some serious talent looking to go further in the State Tournament.

Round of the Top 10 With a Spike

6. Logan
7. Jal
8. Magdalena
9. Hagerman
10. Questa

Logan is the surprise as the No. 6 team in the preseason rankings. Questa is the surprise making the jump into the top-10 as the dark horse bringing back the entire roster minus one off the 13-8 team. Jal is the unknown that could be ready for the next step or fall out. Magdalena and Hagerman are the two we could see playing late in the State Tournament.

Magdalena has Jaydin Stephens (2016), Michaela Zamora (2018) and Julie Zamora (2017) to lead the run. Hagerman brings Jamie Warf (2016), Hannah Hamill (2017) and Emeli Najera (2016) to the table.

1A: Five Listed

1. Corona
2. Elida
3. Santa Fe Waldorf
4. Springer
5. Carrizozo
