Clovis pitcher throws 10-inning complete game (107 pitches)

Covered the Hobbs versus Clovis doubleheader Tuesday and watched Clovis' Landon Williams throws a 10-inning complete game on just 107 pitches (76 strikes). Nothing overpowering but threw strikes, located well and let his defense work (no walks, six strikeouts). First time I've seen this in my nine years covering prep baseball in the state (OK ... I know back in the day some dude probably with a cool nickname threw both ends of a doubleheader, hit in the three hole and walked up hill both ways to get to the ball park - I'm just saying in recent times it's darn impressive).

It's just a reminder to folks in this wood bat age of New Mexico high school baseball – if you throw strikes and locate, you'll be successful even if you don't throw real hard. I'm shocked with the number of walks I still see when these bats have taken a good chunk of the power in the game away.

I know I've asked before, but which prospects do you think are next to land college offers?

How come base coaches don't wear helmets?

I attend alot of minor league games and watch alot of major league baseball. A month or so ago, I was sitting near our team dugout at the high school game when a shot came straight towards my son and I about 2 feet over our heads.

It made me wonder, how come the base coaches aren't wearing helmets. The death of Mike Coolbaugh of Double A Tulsa led to Minor League and Major League Coaches having to wear helmets on the field. That was in 2007. In 2008 it became a rule. The fact that a coach is often not looking at the pitch and at base runners puts the coach in a dangerous spot. Its mandatory in college, MiLB, and in MLB.

However, in Illinois, there was overwhelming opposition to making it mandatory in high school. The thought process is that if you make a coach, will you make the pitcher, 3rd baseman, and first baseman wear one. Will the umpires on the bases be required to wear one. Will everyone have a helmet soon?

Why haven't helmet rules trickled down?
