Congratulations to Jal High School & The EnergyPlex

As part of a $47 million schools and athletic facilities improvement program the Jal High School stadium will get artificial turf and a new $450,000 "state of the art" press box. The softball field will also be turfed. The entire high school will be totally remodeled. It seems that Jal is not going to let nearby Eunice blow them away with new facilities. However, I think Eunice blew the entire state away with their new football field house. Around other parts of the EnergyPlex, the $16M stadium expansion in Hobbs should start construction as soon as this upcoming season is over. The 14 fields adjacent to Hobbs High have now finally completed the remodeling and turf projects. And earth movers are now sculpting the 24 acres for the new athletics and activities complex being built adjacent to NMJC and Zia Park Hotel and Casino. The Maddox Foundation has donated $25M as their share of this adventure that is in partnership with Hobbs Schools, the City of Hobbs, Lea County, New Mexico Junior College and the University of the Southwest. The amazing $14M golf course and club house known as RockWind Community Links will have it's grand opening tournament on May 18th. Hall of Famer Fred Couples will be here and foursome entry fees for the first tournament are $1,000. Call 397-9297 to enter. All of the entities and folks involved in all of these projects deserve a ton of appreciation for their efforts in improving the athletics, health and wellness categories for the residents and visitors of the EnergyPlex.

Just heard that Centennial will have higher enrollment. . .

than Mayfield, Las Cruces and Onate next year, yet Centennial will play 5A again next year. I know that NMAA uses a two-year system, but in this case, it isn't quite fair. Expect Centennial to win multiple state championships next year in a variety of boys and girls sports. Centennial has a combination of factors that are simply too much for the regular 5A schools to overcome: great facilities, students who come from solid middle class families that all have some money to support their sports programs, great coaches, and a lot more students than the other 5A schools.

I know Centennial's baseball team is not a juggernaut this year (they are still very good), but they are playing lots of underclassmen. Also, 5 or 6 of the top 8th graders in Las Cruces have come together and all decided to play baseball at Centennial. Scott Bannister, the guy who took his Las Cruces Little League team almost to Williamsport a few years ago, is heading up a strong crop of 8th graders to go to Centennial under the LC "open enrollment" process for the district. Expect Centennial baseball to be very strong for several years to come.

Gus Macker Downtown Slam & Jam in Hobbs This Weekend

Downtown Hobbs is hosting the Gus Macker 3 on 3 tournament this weekend in conjunction with many other events including two evening concerts. The tournament will be held in the parking lot next to the City Center which is across the street from the new Boys & Girls Club nearing completion. The lot has been repaved and lighted in time for this event. Besides concerts and dances held in the downtown pavilion next to the Center for the Arts, there is a 5K Fun Run/Walk, Mud Volleyball Tournament, Car Show and Corvette Exhibit, numerous dance performances and talent show events, large food court and numerous other attractions surrounding the Gus Macker venue. There are 185 teams signed up so far. This Gus Macker Downtown Slam & Jam is going to be a great event and appreciation has to be extended to all those that have worked so hard to bring this to downtown in the spring instead of the unbearable heat in the summer.
