Bizarre Chain Of Hobbs Oddities And Coincidences

Interesting list of strange situations concerning Hobbs Basketball Championship Games...
1. Hobbs (30-2) was the first champion in the new 6A classification beating Cleveland 60-56 in the 2015 title game.
2. Hobbs (25-2) was also the first team to the win the 5A classification beating Clovis 89-83 in the 2001 title game.
3. Hobbs (25-4) was the last team to win the 4A classification beating Valley 77-66 in the 2000 title game.
4. Hobbs (25-4) was the first team of the 21st century to win the big school title game in 2000.
5. Hobbs (27-0) was the last team of the 20th century to win the big school title game beating La Cueva 78-72.
6. Hobbs is the only team in all big school classifications to win four titles in a row. (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002)
7. The 1999 title game was the only time two undefeated teams played for the title with Hobbs beating La Cueva.
8. Hobbs (25-1) was the first champion in the 4A classification beating Albuquerque 123-87 in the 1970 title game.
9. The only times that over 100 points has been scored in any big school title games were:
In the 2002 5A big school title game with Hobbs (23-4) beating Mayfield (18-8) 101-94.
In the 1988 4A big school title game with Hobbs (24-6) beating Alamogordo (23-4) 110-95.
In the 1980 4A big school title game with Hobbs (24-2) beating Clovis (27-4) 102-91.
In the 1976 4A big school title game with Las Cruces (24-2) beating Hobbs (21-5) 110-96.
In the 1970 4A big school title game with Hobbs (25-1) beating Albuquerque (23-4) 123-87.
(That 36 point victory is still the all time highest score for a championship game.)
In the 1969 2A big school title game with Hobbs (26-2) beating Highland (19-6) 103-75.
In the 1968 2A big school title game with Hobbs (25-1) beating Los Alamos (17-13) 103-79.
(Only two other teams in the smaller classifications have ever scored 100 points in a title game.)
10. Hobbs (26-2) played in the first 2A big school title game in 1964 losing to Roswell (30-3) 80-79.
11. Hobbs (also 26-2) played in the last 2A big school title game in 1969 beating Highland (19-6) 103-75.
(Please note that there never was a 3A big school classification.)
12. Hobbs (27-1) played in the last 1A classification title game losing to Roswell 65-64 in 1963.
13. Hobbs (30-3) won the first 1A title game in the "new" championship format beating Carlsbad (27-2) 92-89 in 1956.
(That title game was played in what is now called Tasker Arena in Hobbs.)
14. Hobbs has the most titles of any school in any classification with 17 out of 21 appearances. They lost 3 of those 4 title games by only one point each.
15. Hobbs won consecutive titles in 56-57-58, 68-69-70, 80-81, 87-88 and 99-00-01-02. Hobbs won 14 of their 17 titles during title game streaks.
16. The 1970 Hobbs championship team held the national scoring record for over four decades.
17. Russ Gilmore won the state championship his first four years at Hobbs (99-00-01-02) which is an almost unimaginable accomplishment.
There a number of books written about the Hobbs Eagles and a movie titled "16 Banners." SENM has by far the greatest chronicle of Hobbs Eagle basketball and if interested you should check out his websites and his book. HIs amazing album of historic pictures is well worth your time. I just realized that nowhere in this post have I mentioned Ralph Tasker. If you have not seen his acceptance speech in California for the National Teacher of the Year award, it was really an impressive Hollywood style event.

Hobbs Gets 12th Seed In Mythical National Championship

MaxPreps did a mythical national championship bracket of the top 68 teams in the nation. Hobbs was New Mexico's only representative and got the 12th seed in the Western Region. It was a very interesting concept to review.

I remember that Hobbs was awarded the Southwestern United States Championship trophy at least two years in a row back in the day. Those trophies were displayed for decades at Ralph Tasker Arena. I am sure SENM has the exact particulars on this.
