No. 16 Cibola @ No. 1 Onate (TBA)
Preview: The Onate Knights are 22-3 on the year and finished with a record of 9-3 in district play. Outside of district play, they are yet to lose a game. Head Coach David Reyes has a loaded senior group that led by Roman Trujillo who is a New Mexico State committee. Trujillo has 3 home runs on the year. Also watch for Fernando Escapita on the mound who is undefeated and Taylor Serna at 2B and P is an all-state candidate. The Cougars are 12-12 on the season, but reeled off some late season district wins and grabbed a playoff spot. Expecting Onate to advance with no issues here.
No. 9 Hobbs @ No. 8 Cleveland (Friday 6PM)
Preview: A very good first round game, usually 8 vs. 9 games are. Cleveland went 5-3 in district play and throughout the year they have been ranked 5-8 impressing weekly. The Storm does not have a clear standout player, however Head Coach Shane Shallenberger has done a great job putting the right guys on the mound. Cleveland is good this year, but will be a front runner next year as they are also youthful. Hobbs finished the year 15-11, but lost their last 4-games in a row. Hobbs has a tough 1st round road trip, but has enough talent to take this to three games. Keep an eye on Junior Devin Beard.
No. 12 Rio Grande @ No. 5 Volcano Vista (4PM)
Preview: The Hawks grabbed the No. 5 seed after going 17-7 and 5-3 on the season. The Hawks also ended the year with 3 wins in a row and have also beat Rio Grande once on the season 2-1. This series will is not an automatic win for the Hawks as Rio Grande has the pitching to keep it interesting. The Ravens also won their last three in a row and are coached by Orlando Griego, one of the best in the biz.
No. 13 Sandia @ No. 4 Carlsbad (7PM)
Preview: Carlsbad will make their annual trip to the prep baseball playoffs as the No. 4 seed. At 17-7 and 10-2 in district, we had the Cavemen slotted as a no. 2 seed, they are that good this year. Except to see 6-foot-5, 190 pound Sophomore Trevor Rogers on the mound in game one, last game he pitched he recorded 13 Ks. Sandia won 13 games in 2015 and reeled off big wins all season long, so they are not your typical No. 13 seed. Guys like Drew Gillespie, Jimmy Gallegos, power hitter Tim Barreras, and Michael Holiday are capable of giving Carlsbad a run.
No. 14 Valley @ No. 3 La Cueva (Friday 4PM)
Preview: The La Cueva Bears are the favorite to win the 6A state title, ask the general population of prep baseball fans and they will say the same thing. Their 8 of their 9 losses this year come way forfeit, other than that La Cueva has beaten 23 teams on the scoreboard. Their roster is loaded with Austin Bell P, Jonathan Stroman P, Wyatt Briggs P, Mitchell Cantwell OF, Sean Allin P, Caleb McAlister P, Scott Ingle IF, Cub Turcotte IF, Andrew Pratt C all having monster seasons. This team is as loaded as it gets. The Vikings at 14-10 have their work cut out for them, but since the pressure is on La Cueva, they should enter this match up relaxed. The Vikings have played a great schedule and have standouts like Paul Tapia 2B, CJ Montoya IF, and Michael Barboa leading the way.
No. 11 Deming @ No. 6 Eldorado (4PM)
Preview: The Eldorado Eagles finished the year 17-7 and 9-3 in district. They ended the year winning their last 7 out of 8 games, does that mean they are peaking at the right time? This team has a ton of playoff experience and excellent leadership in the dugout. Watch for Zak May, austin Tredwell, Garrett Ham, and Nate Garley to lead the way. Deming is quite a surprise this year winning 16 games and going .500 in district play. Hats off to Fernando Holguin and Co. Hector Casas has won 7 games on the year and Dante Urea has been crushing the ball. Will be interesting to see how the Wildcats fare in round one.
No. 10 Mayfield @ No. 7 Clovis (7PM)
Preview: The Clovis Wildcats have a roster built for a 3-game series. Winning 17 games on the year, this is one of the better Clovis baseball teams we have seen in the last 5-7 years. A big reason for their success is the outstanding pitching from Landon Williams, who is one of the best in the state. If Mayfield can’t hit Williams, the Wildcats have a strong chance of advancing to Albuquerque. Mayfield won 8 games in district and fished the year hot winning their last 7 out of 9 games. Watch for SS Ethan Alvaro who had a monster state tournament as a sophomore in 2014.
No. 15 Las Cruces @ No. 2 Rio Rancho (4PM)
Preview: The Rio Rancho Rams ended the year winning 19-games. That is Ron Murphy Baseball. Do the little things right and just win. One of the best programs yearly in New Mexico is standing tall once again. Watch for Wyatt Kelley, Angelo Lujan, Jared Bock, and Mark Dominguez. They don’t have the big names they have had in the past, but they are still just as good. Las Cruces is not your typical No. 15 seed. They have beaten the No. 1 seed Onate 2 out of 3 times. They are a streaking bunch, well coached, and likely feel they can steal this series this weekend. Watch for Junior Kameron Miller who has 3 home runs and also Sam Ellis who has done a great job on the mound.
