Interesting 6A Scoring Stats

Only 13 of the 6A basketball teams in New Mexico have scored more points than have been scored against them. Those same 13 teams are the only teams in 6A that have less than 13 losses as of last update. Which means that there will be 5 teams that make it to the playoffs that will have more than 13 losses and possibly significantly more. Ouch. I like all of this 13 stuff as my 13th birthday was Friday the 13th. LOL

#1 Hobbs - Has scored 2008 points and allowed 1280 for an average win of 30.3 per game.
#2 Cleveland - 1637 & 1199 for avg. 19.0
#3 Albuquerque - 1360 & 1090 for avg. 13.3
#4 Rio Rancho - 1789 & 1496 for avg. 12.2
#5 Carlsbad - 1281 & 1063 for avg. 9.9
#6 Cibola - 1095 & 961 for avg. 6.4
#7 Gadsden - 1167 & 1023 for avg. 6.3
#8 West Mesa - 1260 & 1150 for avg. 5.0
#9 Las Cruces - 1393 & 1276 for avg. 3.1
#10 Sandia - 1190 & 1124 for avg. 3.1
#11 Atrisco Heritage - 1338 & 1276 for avg. 2.8
#12 Valley - 1225 & 1166 for avg. 2.7
#13 Volcano Vista - 1030 & 980 for avg. 2.3

Keep in mind that this is a snapshot and it is possible that a few games could now be included. Also of interest is that Hobbs has scored almost 1,000 more points (almost double) than Volcano Vista so far this season. The other two high scoring teams are Cleveland and Rio Rancho. Just some interesting observations.

Hobbs V & JV Defeats Clovis By Combined 99 Points

The Hobbs varsity and junior varsity defeated the two Clovis teams by a combined total of 99 points in a game loaded with remarkable statistics and situations. First the JV...The Eagles won 73-25 for the 48 point win. Why is that remarkable? Because Hobbs recently lost to that same team in Clovis by over 10 points. That is a 60 point difference between the two games for the winning margin. That loss to Clovis was the only time that the Hobbs JV has lost this entire season. Once again the mercy rule was in place most of the second half which kept this situation from becoming alarming.

The varsity game only got worse for the Wildcats in Tasker Arena last night. Hobbs won 88-37 for the 51 point win. Why is that remarkable? A ton of reasons...Clovis just recently lost to Carlsbad by just one point and to Alamogordo by one point. Quoting Clayton Jones in his article: "The 51-point drubbing is the largest margin of victory in the rivalry since the Eagles beat Clovis 124-58 (66 points) in 1970. The 37 points scored by Clovis is the lowest total in a Hobbs versus Clovis game since the Eagles beat the Wildcats 45-34 in 1954." Again, the mercy rule and playing everyone significant minutes kept the situation from becoming even more alarming.

Hobbs' 1970 team is agreed upon by most to be the best and most prolific high school basketball team of all time in New Mexico. To even be associated with that team's records in any way is remarkable. As far as that 1954 game...that similar defensive effort by Hobbs versus Clovis was 61 years ago. But probably the most remarkable thing was the number of Clovis that came to Hobbs for the game. Hobbs roped off for Clovis exactly half of the west side upstairs which is about 350 seats. Less than 35 (not including players and coaches for the JV & Soph. teams) fans made the trip. I was joking with one of the police officers after the game when I said...I can't believe more cops came than Clovis fans? LOL

Rio Grande Makes Hire

Sam Mascarenas is Rio Grande's new head football coach. During the 2010 season, Mascarenas was the interim head coach after Randy Gutierrez was let go. The Ravens went 2-2 under Mascarenas beating Atrisco Heritage 27-7 that year. The Raven's head coaching position has been a coaching carousel having now 4 coaches since 2010. During the 2013 season the Ravens went 1-9 under Jim Danner, during the 2014 season the Ravens went 1-9 under Patrick Quillen. Rio Grande has not reached the playoffs since the 2006 season.
