New Mexico High School Football: 5A Playoff Projections

NMPreps will try to predict the unpredictable. This season, more than any other, has a true list of bubble teams, uncertainty, and could look completely different in 6 weeks. We give our best shot at it today with plenty of room for debate and disagreements.

DISTRICT PREDICTIONS

District 1-5A: 1) Piedra Vista 2) Belen 3) Highland 4) Miyamura
District 2-5A: 1) Valley 2) Los Alamos 3) Manzano 4) Del Norte
District 3-5A: 1) Santa Teresa 2) Deming 3) Gadsden 4) Chaparral
District 4-5A: 1) Artesia 2) Roswell 3) Goddard 4) Mayfield

2022 PLAYOFF PROJECTIONS

MATCH UPNOTES
#1 ARTESIA (AUTO/DC)The Bulldogs are currently sitting at 2-1 overall and ranked #1 in New Mexico.
#2 PIEDRA VISTA (AUTO/DC)The Panthers are currently ranked 4th in New Mexico
#3 ROSWELL (AT-LARGE/DRUP)The Coyotes will do battle in district play but despite the finish they should find them sitting in the top-5.
#4 GODDARD (AT-LARGE/D3P)Without question the fourth district has four of the top 5 teams in 5A football. A third place finish should get them a top-4 seed.
#5 MAYFIELD (AT-LARGE/D4P) vs
#12 MIYAMURA (AT-LARGE/D3P)
Mayfield had a bad week in week 3 but the Trojans have notched a key wins over ST to keep them ahead, right now. Miyamura rounds out the 12 with an edge of Manzano and Gadsden at this point. Miyamura has a win but this spot is still at play.
#6 SANTA TERESA (AUTO/DC) vs
#11 HIGHLAND (AT-LARGE/D3P)
The Desert Warriors are 1-2 overall heading into week 4. 2 losses against Goddard and Mayfield, both ranked in the top-5. Resume win over Lovington. The Hornets return to the playoffs? A third place (or second) would put them in the playoffs.
#7 VALLEY (AUTO/DC) vs
#10 LOS ALAMOS (AT-LARGE/DRUP)
The Vikings at 2-1 have moved up as a favorite to win the DC of district 2. They'll have a key resume game against Belen coming up for seed position. The Hilltoppers could move into the 10, if they take care of business against Manzano and Highland during district play.
#8 BELEN (AT-LARGE/DRUP) vs
#9 DEMING (AT-LARGE/DRUP)
This could become a repeat of the 2021 playoffs (7 Belen vs 10 Deming). Belen sitting at 1-2 heading into week 4. Deming also 1-2 heading into the week. Both have played a quality schedule to this point.

BUBBLE
Gadsden, Manzano, Chaparral, Del Norte

Just interested in the debate after watching the shootouts and shutouts this week. The boards feel like they highlight offense stats as the superstars, but there are some serious D players and teams in NM. Thoughts?

Run It Back: Thursday Night Recap

NMPreps recap of the games from Thursday night in New Mexico high school football and what those games mean.

BIG TWO THINGS FROM THURSDAY

Organ Mountain 28, Mayfield 0:
No longer in the same classification but still an upset in both history and rank this season. Our preseason top-25 had both teams ranked but Mayfield came in a higher and a favorite to win in class 5A -- currently ranked 2nd. Organ Mountain with a week one loss to Albuquerque moved them to 17th (6A) in the NMPreps Week 3 Team Rankings. Fabian Lozoya was another key player of the night reaching the end zone in the shutout.

Sandia 34, Albuquerque 21: The Albuquerque High Bulldogs showed well in the loss getting on the scoreboard early with a Jabulani Cooper touchdown along with new connections between quarterback Frank Hren and receivers Andrew Roybal/Isaac Houlihan. The Bulldogs would lead 21-14 late in the third. The big story of the night, however, was that of Sandia RB Malachi Thymes who would finish with 215 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Others: Socorro controls the game against Estancia, 54-20. Crownpoint helps as the battle for the final spot in that class is up for grabs, beats Zuni 35-16. Kirtland Central cooled a hot Thoreau team winning 35-6. Miyamura blanks rival Gallup, 50-0.

CENTENNIAL HAWKS at LA CUEVA BEARS

HAWKS

Rank: #1 (6A)
Record: 2-0 overall
Wins: El Paso-Franklin, TX (Week 2), Cleveland (Week 1)
Points Scored: 87
Points Allowed: 56
Road Record: 1-0 (Cleveland)

Why the Hawks: The offense appears to only be getting better each week. The x-factor is having a very talented OL coupled with a talented RB in Mikah Gutierrez (2023).

BEARS
Rank: #3 (6A)
Record: 1-1 overall
Win: Rio Rancho (Week 1)
Loss: Cleveland (Week 2)
Points Scored: 59
Points Allowed: 40

Why the Bears: Talent surrounds this Bears team and coming off a loss last week should fuel them into battle with the Hawks. The connection between Aidan Armenta (2023/QB) and Ian Sanchez (2023/WR) continues to grow.
