Quarterfinals: Quarterbacks to Watch

NMPreps list of the quarterbacks to watch this week in the New Mexico high school football state playoffs. #nmpreps

Aden Chavez, 2023 (Cibola Cougars)
Seed: 7 (6A)
Stat Line: 2855 passing yards and 30 touchdowns
Why Watch: Chavez has been ranked number one all season and this weekend he looks to add to his passing yards going for over 3000 on the season.

Josh Gerardo, 2022 (Volcano Vista Hawks)
Seed: 6 (6A)
Stat Line: 2510 passing yards and 24 touchdowns
Why Watch: Gerardo picked up some football offers over the weekend. He looks to guide the Hawks to another win in the playoffs.

Aidan Armenta, 2023 (La Cueva Bears)
Seed: 3 (6A)
Stat Line: 2357 passing yards and 22 touchdowns.
Why Watch: You don't want to miss Armenta play this season and will battle it out against the Volcano Vista Hawks. Armenta lets it fly and does well at connecting with receivers.

Dominick Priddy, 2022 (Rio Rancho Rams)
Seed: 2 (6A)
Stat Line: 1163 passing yards and 14 touchdowns
Why Watch: Priddy is tough and I like what he does with the football. He's totaled for 19 touchdowns this season (5 rushing) and has the Rams with a 7-1 record.

Brandon Furbee, 2022 (Farmington Scorpions)
Seed: 1 (5A)
Stat Line: 1328 passing yards and 14 touchdowns
Why Watch: The Scorpions are ranked number one for a reason and the guy under center continues to play tough all season. You'll enjoy seeing him manage and hit receivers with non-stop highlights.

Colton Graham, 2022 (Hobbs High School)
Seed: 8 (6A)
Stat Line: 2003 passing yards and 21 touchdowns.
Why Watch: Graham has the yards again this season and can run with 638 rushing yards (5.9 per carry). The Eagles have a tall order taking on the Storm but they have some weapons on both sides that you'll enjoy seeing.

Paul Cieremans, 2023 (Los Lunas High School)
Seed: 2 (5A)
Stat Line: 1114 passing yards 17 touchdowns.
Why Watch: Cieremans is as good as they come in New Mexico high school football. He puts power on his throws but is also tough to bring down doing it with his legs as well.

Evan Wysong, 2023 (Cleveland Storm)
Seed: 1 (6A)
Stat Line: 1,405-yards and 15-touchdowns.
Why Watch: Wysong and the Storm are the top-ranked team in the state. This weekend you'll see Wysong hit many of targets or use his quickness (651-rushing yards/10 touchdowns) to move the Storm along.

Andres Rivera, 2023 (Albuquerque Academy Chargers)
Seed: 5 (4A)
Stat Line: 2345 passing yards and 22 touchdowns
Why Watch: Rivera has done well all season long and this weekend he gets to establish himself among the best quarterbacks in New Mexico leading the Chargers into the next round.

Ashton Aranda, 2023 (Lovington Wildcats)
Seed: 1 (4A)
Stat Line: 1710 passing yards and 23 touchdowns
Why Watch: Aranda has kept the Wildcats at the top of 4A football and will continue to be a must-see player in the playoffs this post season.

Dylan Quartieri, 2022 (Raton Tigers)
Seed: 1 (3A)
Stat Line: 1254 passing yards and 24 touchdowns
Why Watch: The Tigers are number one in 3A football and Quartieri is a big reason why. Attempts dipped some over the last four weeks after such a hot start so we will see what the game plan is for this weekends game.

Ian Lopez, 2022 (Centennial Hawks)
Seed: 4 (6A)
Stat Line: Not available
Why Watch: Lopez has gone under the radar this season but like many Ocampo led quarterbacks they are athletic and know what to do with the ball. He is coming off a 4-touchdown (3 passing/1 rushing) game against Hobbs.

CJ Perea, 2025 (West Las Vegas Dons)
Seed: 6 (3A)
Stat Line: 2015 passing yards and 23 touchdowns
Why Watch: You don't want to miss this freshman play this season. Strong size, smart, and moves the chains for the Dons.

More to Watch
Conagher Pierce, 2022 (Eunice Cardinals)
Dallas Boyd, 2022 (Las Cruces Bulldawgs)
Daemon Ely, 2023 (Taos Tigers)
Nate Taylor, 2022 (Artesia Bulldogs)
Griffin Hooker, 2022 (Ruidoso Warriors)

4A New Mexico HS Football Bracket Breakdown

4A New Mexico HS Football Bracket Breakdown

The 2021 New Mexico high school football playoffs are here and we take a look at each bracket and give our predictions. #nmpreps

4A Bracket
#1 Lovington
#2 Bloomfield
#3 St. Pius X
#4 Moriarty
#5 Albuquerque Academy vs #12 Bernalillo
#6 Ruidoso vs #11 Aztec
#7 Valencia vs #10 Taos
#8 Silver (6-4) vs #9 Kirtland Central (5-5)

Ranking the 1st Round Games
(8) Silver vs (9) Kirtland Central: 1pm, Sat. The two teams met in week one of the season, Silver came out ahead 28-21 in Farmington. Sophomore quarterback Aidan Granado leads the way for Silver with over 1500 total offensive yards this season. 5-foot-9 running back Zakk Thomas is coming off a 108-yard rushing day against No. 2 Bloomfield. We have this one on the earlier upset alert but over 350 miles will be traveled by the Broncos for this one.

(7) Valencia vs (10) Taos: 7pm, Fri. Valencia Jaguar quarterback Rey Garcia has led the way for the team this season and will look to keep things moving in the right direction. The Taos Tigers also led by a junior quarterback in 6-foot-6 Daemon Ely. The Tiger quarterback has over 1,000-yards passing this season as they look for an upset bid.

(6) Ruidoso vs (11) Aztec: 2pm, Sat. The 4A bracket is projected to bring us the must-see games in the first round. Three of the four lines are close with upset alerts on all of them. This one is no exception. Braxton Hall (2022) and Griffin Hooker (2022) lead the offense for the Warriors. Landan Frost (2024) leads the offense with 1300 yards passing and Jacob Greyeyes (2023) on defense for the Aztec Tigers.

(5) Albuquerque Academy vs (12) Bernalillo: 3pm, Fri. The first game was a low scoring affair with the 5-seed Chargers winning 14-7. We should expect junior quarterback Andres Rivera to toss it more this time around. Rivera has over 2,000-yards passing this season. Bernalillo will look to a strong defense led by Kavin Chavez (2022) who at LB has over 100-total tackles on the season.

Line
(5) Albuquerque Academy -8.5
(6) Ruidoso -3.5
(7) Valencia -3
(8) Silver -1.5

Predictions
Kirtland Central 22, Silver 21
Valencia 24, Taos 20
Ruidoso 28, Aztec 24
Albuquerque Academy 24, Bernalillo 12

5-8 Seed That Could Win Two
(7) Valencia. The Jaguars have a very tough game in the opener against Taos. If they get by the Tigers, awaiting at No. 2 is the Bloomfield Bobcats, a team the Jaguars upset earlier this season. Doing it twice will be tough but then again it is the playoffs.

Best Odds at Winning the SC
1) Lovington
2) St. Pius X
3) Moriarty
4) Albuquerque Academy
5) Bloomfield
6) Valencia
7) Taos
8) Ruidoso
9) Aztec
10) Bernalillo
11) Silver
12) Kirtland Central
Scoop: We see a Lovington Wildcat-St. Pius X Sartan State Championship. The winner of Silver and Kirtland will have a tough quarterfinal game.

Bracket
#1 Jal (8-1) vs #8 Estancia (5-4), 6PM

#3 Eunice (6-3) vs #6 Hagerman (4-3), 6PM
#4 Texico (4-4) vs #5 Capitan (7-2), 6PM

Ranking What Games to Watch
1) Eunice vs Hagerman: The game to watch will be a re-match from an October 15th 6-point Eunice win, in Eunice. Conagher Pierce (2022) is averaging over 240 yards per game this season as QB-1 for the Eunice Cardinals.

2) Tularosa vs Lordsburg: Another re-match game in the first round with Lordsburg looking to erase a 27-0 loss on October 15th.

3) Texico vs Capitan: The two teams didn't meet this season. The Texico Wolverines look to use their high powered offense (41.4 average) in the first round.

4) Jal vs Estancia: Estancia has played well winning the last four games and putting up impressive numbers. However, Jal is on another level this season behind running backs Alexavier Carreon (2023) and Jacob Lujan (2023) both of which have gone for over 1,100 yards this season and a combined 34 touchdowns.

Lines
Eunice -3.5
Tularosa -14.5
Texico -19.5
Jal -21.5

Most Likely 5-8 Seed to Win
Hagerman is the obvious pick here with how close the first game was and how well they have played as of late. With a 3.5 line, it should be close but our official NMPreps upset radar is only at a 20% chance of an upset. So tread lightly on this pick this week in Pick 'Em.

Ranking the First Round Games

(7) Cibola vs (10) Sandia: Friday, 7pm. This one will feature the closest line of all 6A games taking place in the first round. The Cibola Cougars enter the game going 5-5 on the regular season and finishing fourth in the tough District I. They are led by a duo of Nathan Lopez (WR/2022) and Aden Chavez (QB/2023). The Sandia Matadors have a top rated running back in Malachi Thymes (2022).

(8) Hobbs vs (9) Eldorado: Saturday, 2pm. The Hobbs Eagles are hosting the Eldorado Eagles on Saturday in a north vs south contest. Hobbs is led by a stout defensive of Aldo Argott (2022) and Kenyon Singleton (2023) who have over 200 tackles combined. Eldorado enters the game after winning 4 of the last 5 games.

(6) Volcano Vista vs (11) Carlsbad: Friday, 7pm. The Volcano Vista Hawks come into the game with a 6-4 record with all four losses coming against teams seeded 1 - 5. They played top-seed Cleveland close earlier October and have a solid quarterback in Josh Gerardo (2022) who has over 2100 yards passing this season. Carlsbad has running back Jesse Rodriguez (2022) and will look to pull an upset despite winning one of the last four games.

(5) Las Cruces vs (12) Clovis: Saturday, 2pm. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs play host to the Clovis Wildcats this Saturday in the opening round of the 6A bracket. The Bulldawgs are led by quarterback Dallas Boyd (2022). After starting the season 1-3 the Bulldawgs went 4-1 to close out the season. 5A New Mexico HS Football Bracket Breakdown

The 2021 New Mexico high school football playoffs are here and we take a look at each bracket and give our predictions. #nmpreps

5A Bracket
#1 Farmington (10-0)
#2 Los Lunas (10-0)
#3 Roswell (5-5)
#4 Artesia (7-3)
#5 Mayfield (6-4) vs #12 Los Alamos (5-5)
#6 Goddard (5-4) vs #11 Valley (4-6)
#7 Belen (6-3) vs #10 Deming
#8 Santa Teresa (8-2) vs #9 Piedra Vista (6-4)

Ranking the 1st Round Games
(10) Deming at (7) Belen: 7pm, Fri.
This game will have a close line of all four games taking place in 5A football. RB Joey Reza (2022) has led the way for the Wildcats behind a tough offensive line. Belen will look to their duo of Sam Tibbs (2022/RB) and Brody Jaquez (2022/DE). This one could come down to the defense that stalls the others run game.

(9) Piedra Vista at (8) Santa Teresa: 1pm, Sat. Santa Teresa is looking to talented ATH Julian Cobos (2022) as they take on Piedra Vista from Farmington. The 6-2 quarterback (Cobos) has over 1800 all purpose yards this season and 18-touchdowns. Piedra Vista brings rising RB Jacob Ramsted who has played well during district play.

(11) Valley at (6) Goddard: 7pm, Fri. This one is a tune up game for the Goddard Rockets before a showdown with crosstown rival Roswell in the quarterfinals. If our line is any indicator, Goddard is a 40-point favorite, it should end early and keeping players healthy. Valley at 4-6 was one of the final team in the playoffs and look to ATH Ricky Henderson (2023) in this contest. Henderson is a quality RB and LB for the Vikings.

(12) Los Alamos at (5) Mayfield: 7pm, Fri. Another Friday evening game on hand with a north team traveling south. The Mayfield Trojans much like 6-seed Goddard will use it as a warm up game for their quarterfinal match up with No. 4 Artesia. Mayfield survived an upset last week to Deming (21-14 OT) but should control this game on Friday with ease. Check out WR Cameron Sowards (2022), RB Jose Montoya (2022), and QB Cesar Granados (2022).

Lines
Mayfield -44
Goddard -40
Belen -1
Santa Teresa -3.5

Predictions
Mayfield 56, Los Alamos 6
Goddard 50, Valley 0
Belen 21, Deming 20
Santa Teresa 17, Piedra Vista 13

5-8 Seed That Could Win Two
(6) Goddard. The second round has the potential for three rival games or rematches from recent games. Goddard-Roswell will provide all of the fireworks for a playoff quarterfinal game. Roswell won the first game (last week) by a score of 16-14. Let's assume this one will be around the same quality. We've learned though head coach Jeff Lynn of Roswell is one of the best in November.

Best Odds at Winning State
1) Farmington
2) Los Lunas
3) Roswell
4) Goddard
5) Artesia
6) Mayfield
7) Belen
8) Deming
9) Santa Teresa
10) Piedra Vista
11) Valley
12) Los Alamos
Scoop: The top six teams have the greatest odds of winning it all. The semifinals promise to be a must-see when we get to that point in a couple weeks.
