Season Recap: A Season of Struggles

One win earns you a playoff at-large bid under the old district alignments. The Belen Eagles are winners of three games over the last two seasons but both earned them a playoff spot. The Eagles started the 2023 season 0-8 before getting a district win that would propel them into the playoff spot.

The Eagles opened the season with a 56-6 loss to rival Los Lunas, then fell 16-7 to Manzano and 51-0 to eventual state champion Artesia. The Eagles then dropped their remaining non-district games to Valley 33-7, Deming, Mayfield (22-20), and Goddard 57-7. The Deming game was a forfeit after the Belen Eagles suffered a strike, under the NMAA's new two-strike rule; Eagles players rushed the Vikings’ sideline, and multiple ejections were issued. The Eagles then fell 32-30 to Highland in the district opener then earned a road win over Miyamura 28-14, the lone win on the season, before falling to Piedra Vista 49-14 to end district.

The Eagles would eventually get a game with Deming, who was the 5-seed in the state playoffs, but fell to them in the first round of the state playoffs 40-3.

The Belen Eagles faced a tough 2023 season, marked by a 1-10 record, significant defeats, and off-field challenges, but managed to secure a playoff spot despite their struggles.

Season Recap: A Season of High Hopes and Hard Lessons

The 2023 season started with high hopes for the Capital Jaguars, buoyed by the momentum of a 5-win season in 2022. They kicked off with a promising 33-17 win over 4A Grants. However, the season quickly took a turn for the worse, ending with a nine-game losing streak and a search for a new head coach.

The Jaguars' early optimism was dashed with a week two loss to 3A St. Michael's (28-20), followed by a narrow 23-20 defeat to 5A Los Alamos. Subsequent losses included a 21-14 setback against 6A Alamogordo, a 20-14 loss to 4A Albuquerque Academy, and a 33-29 loss to 6A Atrisco Heritage, leaving them 1-5 in non-district play.

District play brought more challenges, beginning with a 57-7 defeat to Los Lunas. A close 14-13 loss to Albuquerque on the road was followed by a 34-21 home defeat to Clovis, and a season-ending 28-21 loss to crosstown rival Santa Fe. The Jaguars finished 1-9 overall, missing the playoffs, and leading to the immediate resignation of head coach Joaquin "Wax" Garcia.

2023 Recap

The Bernalillo Spartans, under head coach John Cobos, had a remarkable season in 2023. They started with an upset victory over Valley on opening night, went on a 6-game win streak, and secured a playoff win, finishing the season 8-4 overall.

Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall, 6-1 in district

Bernalillo faces a challenging but manageable schedule. They aim to repeat their upset of Valley in the opener, which could set the tone for an 8-win season. Highland poses a threat with the #2 ranked RB in the state, so avoiding a potential 0-3 start will be key. The Spartans managed to win the ground game battle last season, beating Highland on the road 18-14. Other keys games on this coin flip heavy schedule are Grants, Espanola Valley, Taos, and Moriarty.

Worst Case Scenario: 2-8 overall, 2-5 in district

The 2024 season brings change, as the Spartans compete in a new district. Last season, they defeated some of their new district mates, including Taos (20-14), Espanola Valley (26-18), and Moriarty (14-7). Maintaining these wins will be crucial to avoid missing the playoffs. The new district offers some relief, as they no longer face Lovington (the 4A state champions), Portales (a current threat), and Albuquerque Academy (consistently tough).

Final Thoughts: Over/Under Wins 5.5

The Spartans won 7 regular season games last season, reaching 8 wins with their playoff victory. This season brings change, and although they had success in coin flip games and an upset last season, duplicating that success is difficult. That said, I've gone against the Spartans too many times to count, and Cobos (Spartans head coach John Cobos) has continually proven me wrong. This time, I'm drinking the kool-aid and taking the OVER.

The Hope Christian Huskies experienced a season of ups and downs in 2023, marked by early victories, a tough mid-season slump, and a strong finish that propelled them into the playoffs. They opened the season with promising wins over 2A McCurdy (42-20) and Hatch Valley (23-20), displaying their potential to be competitive.

Season Recap: Bright Spots and Close Calls for the Broncos in 2023

The Kirtland Central Broncos' 2023 season was a rollercoaster of high-scoring games and narrow defeats, ultimately leading to a 3-7 overall record and missing the playoffs. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, the Broncos were unable to turn key close games into victories, which was the difference between a playoff berth and a .500 season.

The season started with a tough 48-20 loss to Valencia. The Broncos quickly bounced back in their second game, delivering a commanding 46-14 victory over 3A Thoreau, demonstrating their potential early on. Week three brought a high-scoring shootout against Montezuma-Cortez from Colorado, where the Broncos fell 54-40 in a game that highlighted their offensive firepower but also their defensive vulnerabilities.

Kirtland Central continued to show their offensive prowess by torching Rio Grande 57-6, but their defensive issues re-emerged in back-to-back shootout losses. They fell to Grants 54-42 and Espanola Valley 54-30, both of whom are set to be district opponents in the 2024 season.

A tough 46-6 loss to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, marked the end of their non-district schedule, leaving them with a 2-5 overall record. Entering district play, the Broncos faced a formidable Bloomfield team, losing 52-0. However, they managed to secure a decisive 54-0 win against Gallup, giving them a glimmer of hope in the district standings.

In their final district game, Kirtland Central faced Aztec and fell 48-22, concluding their district play with a 1-2 record. The season ended with the Broncos at 3-7 overall, falling short of playoff contention. Despite the disappointing record, the season had bright spots that showed the team's potential for future growth.

2024 Outlook: Offensive & Defensive Players to Watch

The Kirtland Central Broncos are looking to bounce back in the 2024 season after a challenging 2023 campaign. The team faces significant departures but also has key returning players and promising newcomers poised to make an impact.
