Atrisco Heritage Jaguars
Spring Preseason Rank: No. 17
2018 Record: 1-9 overall, 0-5 district
Playoffs: Missed Playoffs

BREAKDOWN
Best-case scenario: 2-8 overall.
The Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars are in a tough situation this coming season. The person who created their schedule didn't give them any favors, especially with the district that they play in with the likes of three teams ranked in the top three. The possible winners: Rio Grande and West Mesa.

Worst-Case scenario: 0-10 overall. Taking out the two winnable games in Rio and West Mesa the Jaguars could be in a situation that has them going winless in 2019. Opening with Mayfield is a tough opener followed by a Sandia team that looks to be one of the most likely to be the best improved by seasons end.

Over/Under: 1.5 wins. The Jaguars went 1-9 last season and getting back to that mark will be a challenge itself. Rio Grande has continued to improved, West Mesa will be better in year two, and this could be a year that the Jaguars struggle to get a win.

Prediction: 1-9 Overall

Brett Money continues to be the name for all kickers in New Mexico. After, an injury sidelined the kicker in 2018, the 2019 season could be a promising one for the D-1 level talent. Money, has spent the summer on the campus' of Wisconsin, Colorado State, Auburn, among others. At, Wisconsin Money qualified for the finals as the top punter, placed second at Oklahoma State, and won the field goal competition at Colorado State. The list is long with a highly productive summer for Money.

UNM Final Decision - Soccer Out

After a year of efforts to save the UNM Soccer Program the decision has been made to discontinue the program. Shocking to many as it was one of the most successful programs at UNM. Three other programs will end Monday as well. They are beach volleyball and the men's and women's ski teams. I still find it amazing that the small University of the Southwest in Hobbs can field soccer teams but a huge school and large city like Albuquerque cannot pull it off. With the almost ghastly amount of money pouring into this state from Lea and Eddy counties from energy resources (oil, gas, refineries, 4 large electricity plants in Lea, 2 of the nation's largest nuclear waste facilities, wind farms, solar farms, etc.) one would think that funding for those four teams should not only be easy but a drop in the bucket.

Dorian Lewis - 2020 - Cleveland HS
The top rated running back entering the 2019 New Mexico High School football season. Lewis won the New Mexico Gatorade Player of the year award after rushing for over 1,800 yards last season. Electronic scorekeeping

An idle offseason thought ... doesn't it seem likely that within the next 5-10 years high schools would adopt some of universal electronic scorekeeping system like Gamechanger? I would have to think that a majority of teams now keep their book via some electronic device as opposed to the traditional pencil and paper scorebooks.

If everyone used the same system and transmitted the results to some centralized database, you could have immediate statewide access to scores, pitch counts, stats, etc. There are some practical considerations, mainly the cost of the devices and subscription to the service. But it seems like it would be doable. Just like the NMAA adopted MaxPreps for a certain amount of record keeping, and requires coaches to input info to that site, I could see them eventually mandating scorekeeping in this kind of form. And it could be done in other sports as well.

Albuquerque Bulldogs
Spring Preseason Rank: Independent
2018 Record: 4-6 overall, N/A district
Playoffs: N/A

BREAKDOWN
Best-case scenario: 4-6 overall.
The Albuquerque Bulldogs will again play as an independent for the 2019 football season. The Bulldogs have four coin flip or favorite games. Those four best case scenario wins would be against Valley (8/22), Highland (10/10), at Rio Grande (10/17) and Shiprock (10/26). The Bulldogs have a pair of players that could carry them this season in Jorge Bolivar (LB/2021) and Luke Mummert (RB/2021).

Worst-Case scenario: 2-8 overall. Taking a look at the four best case scenario games the Bulldogs will have a pair of coin flip games with Valley and Rio Grande. The Bulldogs did suffer losses to both teams last season and will hope a year will make the difference. Valley does look to be in a re-start position while Rio Grande continues to improve each season.

Over/Under: 3.5 wins. The Bulldogs are an interesting team. They did get to four wins last season (Miyamura, Del Norte, Highland and Shiprock) and will look to get back to the four win mark this season with a similar schedule. Although the Bulldogs will be a 'good' team again this season, those on the schedule will be improved as well. Today, I am going UNDER as they are going to have to replace some key players from their roster.

Prediction: 2-8 Overall

PREDICTED OREDER OF FINISH
Los Lunas Tigers (3-0)
Valencia (2-1)
Belen (1-2)
Valley (0-3)

What We Know: The Los Lunas Tigers went 3-0 last season in district play and did it in convincing fashion only allowing 20-points in three games while putting up a total 91. The Tigers should confidently win the district comfortably again in 2019. They return Kade Benavidez (2020) and Andrue Garcia (2020) to create the best qb-wr duo in the district.

Uncertainty: The district is in question this coming season and could end up being a two and/or three big league at best. Valencia, seems to be improving in what will be year two of the Wesley Shank era. Belen, is going through a coaching change and projected to take a dip and Valley will deal with graduation loss.

Games to Watch (Non-District): Belen vs Del Norte (8/23), Belen at Farmington (8/30), Belen vs Artesia (9/6), Los Lunas at Roswell (9/13), Los Lunas vs Goddard (9/27), Valencia vs Bloomfield (9/27). Belen could be 0-3 after the first three weeks of football. Los Lunas takes on a pair of contenders in defending champ Roswell and two weeks later against Goddard from Roswell. Valencia gets a resume game against Bloomfield (4A). Valley won't show much in the non-district slate. They have Albuquerque, Highland, Rio Grande along with Piedra Vista and La Cueva. We won't learn much from any of those five, unless they lay an egg against the three teams they'll be favored against, Albuquerque would be my early guess.

Los Lunas 327
Belen 311
Valencia 292
Valley 241

NO. 7 CLOVIS WILDCATS
2018 Season:
20-9 overall, 4-2 district Head Coach: Jaden Isler

Scoop: Just like that the Wildcats basketball program is back in the conversation. Jaden Isler was hired last summer to take over a Clovis program that went 9-17, 1-9 district. That is an 11-game win difference and also took a share of the district championship in his first season. Dewayne Dawson (2020) and Bryce Cabeldue (2020) will create one of the best inside-out duos returning this season. Dawson a spot up shooter and also a good defender, having long arms allowing him to get a good reach on things.

Ceiling: (3-5 range). This program is only getting better and I think they have more depth, in terms of having production from the bench. Yes Dawson and Cabeldue are the studs to watch but keep an eye on Blake Muscato (2021), Jaden Phillips (2021), and Mason Figueroa (2020). I do have 3-5 range as the ceiling but don't be surprised if they end up in the 1-4 conversation as well.

Floor: (8-10 Seed Range). I don't see them not in the conversation for anything 8 or lower (7-1) in the seed debate coming February 2020. If we had to set a floor, and we do, then we could see a runner up in district finish and couple resume losses placing them here.

Quick Prediction: 20 wins. I already want to disagree with their No. 7 rank this preseason. Of the 5 votes, they were ranged from 3 to 9 and a 7 came out. I say this is now my dark horse heading into the season.
