NO. 16 CARSLBAD CAVEMEN
2018 Season:
15-14 overall, 1-5 district Head Coach: Jamaal Brown

Scoop: The good news for the Cavemen this coming season will be the return of guard Josh Silas who put up 22 points per game and 2 steals per contest. Silas is a perfect guard for head coach Jamaal Brown who gets the best out of his players. Brown built Carlsbad from the worst big school program and I'm sure, even-though, we have them this high up they will return into contention.

Ceiling: Bubble Team (10-16). When you return a player that can score, boards well for a guard, can dish, and play D - you have something to be excited about. Surrounding Silas with players will be the question this season but have Andrew Miller (2021) returning after averaging 6 points and 3 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

Floor: First Four Out (17-20). The Cavemen shouldn't dip further than 20 this season and with the return of 11 of their 13 players on varsity last season is a big sign they could be on the rise.

Quick Prediction: 15-18 win range. I like the mixture of inside-outside presence returning. No, not extremely big and they lose Stevie Bartlett on the inside but 2020 player Evan Sullivan can fill the void. Also, will Shamar Smith make a return? He could have them a lot lower in the rankings (8-12 range).

NO. 17 SANDIA MATADORS
2018 Season:
10-15 overall, 4-6 district Head Coach: Danny Brown

Scoop: When the Sandia Matadors hit the floor in November they will have a new head coach in Danny Brown, the former Highland High School head coach. The Matadors return after a 10-15 season and nearly earned a bid to the state playoffs. The building process starts for the Matadors as they welcome back four players off the 2018/2019 roster. We gave them a generous bump with their biggest win of the season - hiring Brown.

Ceiling: Bubble Team (15-16). The Matadors will upset a team or two along the way this season. The issue we have is lack of experience and will also be young for the players that do return. We could be generous on having them at 17 today, likely would have been in the 20's had the head coaching change not taking place. 15 would be a high ceiling for them.

Floor: 20/20 Vision (20-27). Sandia, like Manzano and West Mesa, have the opportunity to surprise teams. They also have the opportunity to end up in the 20-27 range.

Quick Prediction: 6-10 range. The Matadors are going to go through a transition this season with a new head coach, new varsity roster, and a district built with teams in the same range.

Hobbs Basketball Fared Well In Lubbock.

The Hobbs Eagle basketball team was impressive at the 75 team tournament held at Texas Tech in Lubbock. Hobbs got matched up with the best team in the tourney that had 2 seven footers and three over 6'6". Both of the 7 footers are being heavily recruited by major college programs. Hobbs held a nice lead late in the game before losing by two points. It is funny, Hobbs does not look like much but dang can they play basketball. More good news if you have not heard...Jalen Goer and his coach father are staying in Hobbs after all after he accepted another college head job out of state. Jalen wanted no part of leaving Hobbs so his dad resigned the position to allow him to stay.

NO. 18 MANZANO MONARCHS
2018 Season:
14-13 overall, 6-4 district Head Coach: Dominick Romero

Scoop: The Monarchs program has life again after two years under head coach Dominick Romero. Romero took for the program in the summer of 2017 after a 2-23 season; the Monarchs have gone 29-24 with back-to-back winning seasons. The Monarch finished tied for the regular season district championship last season and reached the state tournament after going 14-13 overall.

Ceiling: Bubble Team (13-16). The position might seem high for the Monarchs at 18th on our ranking countdown. The ceiling doesn't seem any better with the best case scenario being a bubble bid and last four in again. They lose all three double-digit scorers and the rest of the district will be improved.

Floor: 20/20 Vision (20-27). Like most teams that will enter the rankings in the 14-19 range it could be a rise or fall type of year (not so much make or break but on the same note). The Monarchs will be in a rebuild with the lone return of Roman Romero (2020) who put in 6.4 points per game.

Quick Prediction: 9 to 11 win range. Romero has been known to build and rebuild everywhere he has been (Cobre, Hot Springs, Socorro, Valencia) and is likely to keep the Monarchs as a dark horse to return to the playoffs. 11 wins could be the high end however and that is more on losing a bulk of the roster and the rest of the district featuring improved teams.

Recruiting recommendation (official visits)

Just a reminder for all those Junior (soon to be senior) football players, the rules changed last year on when you can take "official" visits to schools.

This year you start taking official visits to schools from April 1st through June 23rd and/or again starting opening day of classes senior year.

Just some rules on official visits:

-- Maximum of 5 visits to D1 and D2 schools combined. (Official visits to JUCO, NAIA & D3 schools are unlimited.)

-- You may only take ONE official visit per institution, no matter the division.

-- Each official visit may be up to 48 hours long.

-- You will need to be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and provide your most recent high school transcript and a copy of an ACT or SAT test score prior to the visit

-- Official visits may not occur in conjunction with participation in a camp or clinic.

-- Official visits cannot be made until the opening day of class senior year, no matter what division. The date will vary depending on your school.

-- The school is allowed to pay for lodging, transportation, meals, and entertainment. That includes (1) round-trip transportation (rental car or airfare) for the student-athlete between home (or high school) and the campus, (2) you (and your parents) may receive 3 meals per day and (3) complimentary admissions to campus athletics events. (Each school differs in policy and budget.)

-- Official visits are not allowed to occur during recruiting dead periods.

ASU team camp

Onate, Belen, Los Alamos, Academy, Hot springs, and Valencia made the trip to Arizona States team camp.

Onate finished 2-1 in pool play in a tough well coached pool.
Valencia is in by far the toughest pool and is hanging in there with some of the best teams in AZ. Haven’t seen them play yet but looking forward to it.

Belen and Academy unfortunately got put in the same pool. Both look young and on the rise. Academy has a good player not sure if his name but has looked good so far. Belen is young and will keep getting better. Brought 3 sophomores on this trip.

Hot springs beat a very good Valley Vista team who beat Santa De last weekend in the section 7 team camp, and is a good 6A program in AZ.
