Despite a tough start with a 52-0 loss to powerhouse Melrose, the Silverbacks bounced back impressively with seven consecutive wins. Key victories included dominant performances over Clayton (62-26), Lordsburg (56-6), Tatum (34-30), and Mesilla Valley (64-36) in non-district play. In district competition, they defeated Pine Hill (52-20), Questa (46-30), and Menaul (44-12). • Streak into 2024: 41-game losing streak

Signs of improvement but they narrowly missed ending the streak with a 21-18 loss on the road to Ruidoso. The struggles continued with losses to Bel Air, Texas (61-0), Hatch Valley (37-19), and El Paso-Cathedral, Texas (48-0). In district play, they were defeated by Gadsden (50-0) and Deming (43-0). • Playoffs: First Round (Lost, to Raton 35-8)
  • Points Scored: 319
  • Points Given Up: 197
  • Streak into 2024: 1-game losing streak
The Thoreau Hawks have quietly put together one of their best three-year spans, achieving three consecutive winning seasons and reaching the playoffs each year. In 2022, they even won a playoff game. Last season, they claimed their second consecutive district championship, finishing 7-4 overall and 3-0 in district play.

The Hawks started the 2023 season strong with wins over Zuni (52-0) and Tucumcari (20-6). However, they hit a rough patch in September with a three-game losing streak against 4A Kirtland Central, McCurdy, and West Las Vegas. They bounced back with dominant victories over Tohatchi (40-0) and Newcomb (37-0) to finish their non-district slate at 4-3.

Entering district play, the Hawks extended their winning streak by defeating Cuba (24-6), Crownpoint (50-0), and Wingate (50-0). They earned a playoff bid, on a five game win streak, but fell to Raton in the first round, 35-8.

  • Playoffs: Missed the playoffs
  • Points Scored: 259
  • Points Given Up: 115
  • Streak into 2024: 2-game winning streak
The Cuba Rams had a solid 2023 season, finishing with an impressive 8-2 record. However, a crucial 24-6 loss to Thoreau in their district opener ultimately cost them a spot in the playoffs. The Rams started strong, winning their first six games, including victories over 3A Santa Fe Indian (13-12), Zuni (43-0), Shiprock (50-0), Newcomb (28-6), Tohatchi (20-13), and Laguna-Acoma (48-22).

Their undefeated streak ended with a 26-7 loss to McCurdy in the final non-district game. They then suffered the pivotal district loss to Thoreau that we mentioned. Despite these setbacks, the Rams finished the season on a high note with wins against Wingate (30-6) and Crownpoint (14-6).
