Better Week for MLS v LigaMX

So this week it looks like the MLS teams have finally woken up and got some real good results in the CCL vs their LigaMX opponents.

NY Redbulls beat Tijuana 2-0 in TJ, which is never an easy feat.

Toronto beat the best team in LigaMX, Tigres 2-1, in Toronto. That away goal could end up being the difference back in Monterrey for the 2nd leg.

Seattle just beat Chivas up at Centurylink 1-0. Seattle couldve/shouldve had maybe 1-2 more goals if not for some MLS style poor finishing in front of the goal.

RedBulls are in the best position having two away goals in their favor. The others will have a lot of work to do in thier 2nd legs next week.

RECAP - #1 Bernalillo holds off #8 St. Michael’s,

Five straight Spartan points and we thought it was off to the races. But the Horsemen would have other plans as they held their own against the infamous runnin’ gunnin’ Spartans. Bernalillo would jump out to a 17-7 lead through the first, but outscore and get within seven again at the break. The second half though would get more interesting as St. Michael’s challenged and defended Bernalillo well through most of the third quarter. But it was not nearly enough as Bernalillo was able to close out the game and move on to the 4A semifinals.

RECAP - #3 Pecos races past #6 Cuba, 70-43

It was a game I thought would be a tad closer considering their playing styles, but the Pecos defense stymied the Rams usually burning offense. Early it was Pecos creating turnovers and getting open looks in their well executed offense. Mario Archuleta and Carlos Cordova led the charge and managed the game well. Cuba had a poor first quarter but opened up a bit in the second quarter. But by halftime the damage was done.

RECAP - #4 Moriarty outduels #5 Taos in slugfest, 49-42

Well I was wrong about the race to 60 points in this one, but it's the playoffs. It's not often to evenly matched teams allow each other to score easily. In this case though it was a back and forth affair by quarter. Taos jumped out to an 11-3 lead but a 20 point second quarter by Moriarty caught them up with the Tigers. A Taos owned third quarter opened up a Pinto dominated fourth. It was then that foul trouble added up for both sides but Taos was hurt the most with their big, Allen Martinez fouling out. The Moriarty bigs attacked the glass and helped the Pintos clinch the semifinal bid.

RECAP - #4 Santa Rosa battles #5 Newcomb in 2OT classic to win, 54-52

In what would seem like any other 4-5 matchup, this didn't hint at a battle. Santa Rosa jumped out early to a 10-6 lead through one with help from Joaquin Romo and Cody Schattschnedier. But Newcomb's pressure defense and 3-point shooting from Deondre Begay and Kelkenny Watchman, put the Skyhawks ahead at the break. A back and forth 3rd led way to a 4th quarter comeback for Santa Rosa where they trailed by as much as 12 to take a late two point lead. Newcomb though would hit a go-ahead runner to tie it up and send the game into overtime. In the overtime, no one would score until an odd sequence late where teams exchanged four points in a matter of 30 the final thirty seconds would lead to one more Santa Rosa attempt to win. Santa Rosa had two solid looks but couldn't get the ball to fall as we went into a second overtime. In the second overtime, Newcomb had to do without it's twin guards that had led them in playmaking and a late three put them up by one late. Joaquin Romo's putback put Santa Rosa up by one and a failed Newcomb three point attempt led to a foul to send Santa Rosa to the line with 2 seconds left. Despite the split free throws, Newcomb's long three from three-quarter court was short and Santa Rosa survived to advance to the semifinals, 54-52.

RECAP - #2 Silver trounces #7 Shiprock,

It was not the start Shiprock wanted but it was everything Silver does best. One of the best defensive teams in the classification made the statement that there was to be no upset in this matchup. The Fighting Colts limited Shiprock to a single point in the first quarter then proceeded to shoot over 50% for the first half. Despite a quick start to the third quarter for Shiprock, Silver put out those flames as well. Tristen Moore of Silver put on a brilliant shooting display and finished with a game high 27 points. Silver advances to play #3 Hope Christian for a spot in the 4A championship game.

Tularosa shot 10 for 20 in the first half on their way to a serious upset bid. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they couldn’t sustain the same energy and level of efficiency in the second half as Estancia held them to 5 points in the third quarter. Estancia turned up their defensive intensity and forced numerous steals into points. Tularosa couldn't find the same offensive touch and only managed 15 points in the second half while allowing Estancia to score 34 points in the second half.
