2017 Hobbs Eagles Football

As a Hobbs Native, I am very excited to see the Eagles perform they way that they are doing this year. My ultimate wish is to bring the Football program to match the basketball program but we are still miles away from doing that. Now I'm going to be realistic! As a fan I would love to see us make it to the Semi Finals for the first time since the early 80's but this team reminds me of the 2000 Football team but of course with more success. The 2000 Hobbs Eagle Football team started the season 7-0 but ultimately went on a 3 game losing streak against Eldorado, Carlsbad, and losing in the first round to Valley 42-7. Alot of reason to them starting the season 7-0 was because of Clovis, Artesia, Roswell, and Lovington having a down year. As for this year 17 years later it was Centennial, Onate, Mayfield that has had a down year with the only quality team win coming over Artesia. History says that they will beat Piedra Vista then fall flat to Cleveland 55-17 but I would love to be proved wrong for once..

Velocity Programs

So I was up late using every minute of my midnight deadline to finish my research paper for my master class. I chose to do an article review over the affects of underweighted & overweighted baseballs on velocity & accuracy. I based my paper off of 12 different studies on the topic. Here is what I found

1. Not a single study I found reported a single injury. I found 25 of them, but only used 12 for my paper.

2. All of them but one reported increases in velocity after using a program for at least 6 weeks. Most reported velocity increases during bullpen sessions after participants used weighted balls for practice warmups.

3. Accuracy was not affected in a positive or negative way after using any of these velocity programs.

4. Top Velocity uses one of these studies to prove why these programs are bad. If you look on their website they list research done in the Straub study. The study shows no increase at all after a 6 week velocity program with weighted balls. However, what Top Velocity doesn't tell you is Straub picked high school kids who were non-baseball players to do the study on. Straub also used the least amount of throwing reps per week when compared to the other studies. Every other study I found used either college or high school players and they all had increases in throwing velocity. I've always questioned Top Velocity's claims, but now that I've dug deeper I feel like they've lost some credibility.

5. The idea of using overweighted and underweighted devices has been around since WWI. Russian researchers began testing it on their olympians who competed in throwing events with great results.

6. There isn't much research out there in relation to injuries or long term affects of using these velocity programs. For what it's worth we implemented Driveline last year & almost all my guys said their arms felt great all year & we averaged a 7.5mph increase program wide over the course of 8 weeks. However, we also implemented a no icing policy unless swelling or stiffness was present in the arm. Icing delays the healing process, we began using active recovery this last season.

We use the Driveline system, but I have modified it a little bit. I still think of it as a dynamic lift and don't let my guys throw the weighted or plyo balls everyday. We do the recovery stretches, bands, & tennis ball massages everyday. I'd be interested to hear what anyone else thinks. I really just want to share information and learn as much as possible.
