Grine's Scoop: Plenty of shake-ups unfolded this week, as several favorites stumbled in their district openers, introducing a wave of unpredictability into our seed allocations and selections. District 2-5A experienced a notable impact from the unfolding uncertainty. The surprise victories include West Mesa's upset over La Cueva on Wednesday, Farmington's triumph over Sandia, and from 3-5A Centennial's upset against Alamogordo, elevating them from "in the hunt" to our "Next Two." While Volcano Vista (No. 1) and Organ Mountain (No. 2) seem secure in their positions, the third seed appears to be leaning toward Cleveland, granted they only lose to Volcano Vista and finish 6-2 in district play. However, they face competition from Atrisco Heritage (No. 5), adding an element of uncertainty. Additionally, Farmington (No. 4) made significant strides, marking the most substantial ascent from Week 8 to Week 9 in our NMPreps Road to the PIT: Bracketology.

5A - TUESDAY - JANUARY 23RD

Sandia (10-6) at Farmington (15-1), 7 pm — Farmington seeks to reclaim the respect it had after the Hobbs Holiday Tournament, while Sandia aims to rebound and assert its top-5 ranking. With District 2-5A tipping off tonight, every game becomes crucial for a state tournament bid. This matchup is a must-watch. Prediction: Farmington 66, Sandia 65 (Double OT)

Albuquerque (10-6) at Santa Fe (13-3), 7 pm — Albuquerque High, with added key players, is poised for improvement. Both teams favor outside shooting, and in this wide-open district, they vie to establish themselves as favorites for the championship. Prediction: Santa Fe triumphs at home, 69-60.
