Open Tryout

There is an open tryout for uncommitted seniors at Paradise Valley Community College and Gateway Community College on May 20th at PVCC. I know that it is a little bit of a drive to Phoenix, but if you know of or have any seniors who you think have the ability to play college baseball, this may be one of their last chances. The cost is only $10. If a kid will be attending, they should contact Victor Solis beforehand (see the link). Here is a link to the tryout, including the forms that must be completed:

Belen Hires Longtime Metro Assistant Coach

Belen Hires First Time Head Coach Andrew Dunnell

The Belen High School Eagles have made their hire official making long time metro area assistant coach Andrew Dunnell the new man in charge.

"I am so blessed with the opportunity to be the next head coach and looking forward to competing this year". Dunnell on the announcement.

The 2006 Manzano High school graduate, the team that went 28-2 winning the schools state championship. Coaching was something that he wanted to do right away and after graduating high school he immediately joined his alma mater and then head coach staff Greg Brown. Dunnell would eventually stay on each of the coaching staffs of head coaches that followed Brown in Travis Julian and David Gibson.

During his time at Manzano, Dunnell helped the Monarchs reach the State Tournament each season minus one time, two title games and three Division 1 athletes. Dunnell then spent the past three years at Sandia High School as an assistant coach.

"I know that this school and community loves their basketball and have really passionate fans". Dunnell stated on being hired at Belen.

Dunnell who follows the state basketball scene is aware of the 5A program, coming from 6A. He stated that he is coming to the Eagles who are coming off a 21-win season and 5-seed in the 2017 state tournament. The Eagles also play in district 5-5A against rival Belen High School with former Monarch head coach Travis Julian, now the head man at LLHS.

"It is going to be a lot of fun joining this rivalry and I know that both teams are very talented." Dunnell stated on the two schools and playing against his former coach.

When describing the 2017-2018 Eagles Dunnell explained he will build off the success the Eagles have built and understands the adversity the program went through to end the season.

"That takes an extremely tough group of kids to get through that and I’m hoping that they will give me a chance and embrace me into the community. Our mantra for this year is going to be that we have to “Earn Success” and that is going to be a huge part of our program. We are going to earn our success by playing the game of basketball the right way and following our CORE VALUES."

Those values of being - Hard Working, Having Integrity, Being Tough, and Being Together.
