2018 Varsity Baseball Tournament - Grants NM

Coaches - We hope your seasons are going well. We are sending out this early invite to our 1st Annual Pirate Baseball Invitational that will be taking place next season (March 22-24, 2018) at Pirate Baseball Stadium in Grants NM. We hope to make this an annual event and make it as competitive as possible. There will be NO ENTRY FEE for your team to enter, all you will need to do is provide the tournament director with 1 dozen game balls. It will be a 3 game guarantee (typical 8 team HS tournament format). I know it is early but please let us know if you are interested so we can "pencil" you in and we will finalize everything after this season. Remember it will be an 8 team tournament so the first 7 teams to reserve their spot will be in. Tournament will be primarily 5A and 6A schools.

Thanks

Reminder this is for the entire season.

Should they consider more to the alignment?

Should they consider more to the alignment?

Not just enrollment numbers but maybe history of competitiveness?

For example for next year (5A Division 1 and 5A Division 2)
Division 1 Top 16 Schools
Division 2 Bottom 8 Schools

*If it was 24 schools. Maybe a two-year look so for 2017 Division 2 would be
Rio Grande (0-20), Santa Fe (0-20), Gadsden (2-18), Highland (3-16-1), Valley (7-13), (9-11), Carlsbad (6-14)

Just hypothetical and putting an idea out.

5A Championship: Roswell too much for Capital

SCORE- #1 Roswell def. #2 Capital 74-53

Recap

Mesquita's triple-double leads Roswell over Capital to claim 5A Championship

For the second straight year the Capital Jaguars found themselves playing for the 5A championship, last year they were sent away by district rival Espanola Valley and this year they faced Roswell.

So far in this 2017 tournament the Coyotes looked very much unlike what a number one seed usually does this time of year. They had an opening round scare against Bloomfield, nearly lost to Kirtland Central in the second round, and pulled away in the second half to beat Del Norte.

On this day however, there would be no scares or second half pushes for a win. The Coyotes came out early and from the tip were in control and asserted themselves as the best team on the floor. Tarren Burrola went a perfect 3-3 from behind the three-point line and Chris Mesquita found every open teammate to the tune of 6 assists. Roswell led 27-18 after and you tell this was the Roswell team that everyone expected to see.

The Roswell lead ballooned to 43-24 at halftime and the route was on from there.

Capital played their best quarter of the game in third but only managed to trim a mere three points of their deficit heading into the fourth.

Mesquita scored just two points in the fourth, but he dominated it by pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four more assists to help propel his team to the 74-53 win. Roswell heads home with their ninth blue trophy and second in the last four years.

Final stats

Roswell
Terran Burrola 25 points
Chris Mesquita 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists
Garret Smothermon 12 points and 4 assists
Logan Eaker 11 points and 9 rebounds

Team shooting:
31-55 (56%) overall
7-12 (58%) from three
5-10 (50%) from FT line

Capital
Jeremy Anaya 17 points and 4 rebounds
Matt Smith 10 points and 7 rebounds

Team shooting:
20-55 (36%) overall
7-20 (35%) from three
6-10 (60%) from FT line

Sandia-Carlsbad Game

I7q3DMl.jpg

Sandia HS Varsity boys are playing a tournament this week in Carlsbad. Just want to give a big shout out to the Carlsbad Cavemen for what they did for us today. As many of you know our beloved Coach Gunther is battling stage 4 cancer. He is on Hospice care and could not make the tournament. Before our first game the announcer had the teams that were at the ballpark circle the infield hand in hand and the announcer said an amazing prayer for our coach and his family and for our team over the PA system. At the end of the prayer all of the other competitors shook our players hand one by one and wished them well. I don't think there was a dry eye in the park. Although HS baseball is a fiercely competitive sport, at the end of the day we are still one big baseball family. I am so proud to be a part of this sport. I am also proud to be from Southeast New Mexico where praying for someone in need takes precedent over being politically correct. Thank you Carlsbad Cavemen for your prayers.
