Elite Eight Recap: Portales Over Moriarty

FINAL: Portales 35 Moriarty 31

RECAP
In their fourth meeting this season, Portales showed their dominance on the boards as they defeated Moriarty for their third time this season. Action began rather slow to start the game with both teams sizing each other up. But Portales found success from the perimeter as they knocked down key 3s. The game was tightly contested the rest of the way with Moriarty never letting the game get too far and staying within 8 points. The Pintos even came as close as four points but every time they did Portales found a way to rally to keep the Pintos at bay. In the waning minutes, Moriarty threatened again thanks to the efforts of Alyssa Adams. But the Pintos couldn't capitalize on key possessions late as Portales would claim the win and advance.

STATS
Portales
Taylee Rippee finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds
Zamorye Cox also had 8 points.
Lindsay Blakey added 7 and 12 rebounds

Portales shot 11 for 36 for 29% and 2 of 8 from 3point land.

Moriarty
Alyssa Adams tallied 10 points and 6 rebounds
Alyssa Sauter added 9 points and 7 rebounds
Emerald Russell finished with 8 and 4 rebounds.

The Pintos shot 13 for 40 from the field (33%) and 2 of 12 from distance.

#5 Moriarty finishes their season 19-8.

The theme this post season has been district rivals. With that #5 Portales will end up facing #1 Hope Christian Thursday morning at 8AM.

Elite Eight Recap: Goddard Into the Semi-Finals

FINAL: #5 Goddard 30 #4 Academy 24

RECAP
What began as a cold start for Goddard ignited a 2nd Quarter rally that helped them take an 18-7 lead into halftime. Micaela Kolker fired off two timely, back-to-back three point baskets to help propel the Lady Rockets ahead. Goddard proceeded to keep Academy's star forward, Sophie Long from even receiving the ball for much of the game after that. A better 3rd quarter helped Academy cut back into the Goddard lead. The fourth quarter both teams were dismal shooting from distance. Late in the fourth, Academy found some opportunities to cut even further but couldn't capitalize on them.

STATS
Goddard
Micaela Kolker led all scorers with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting including 2 of 4 from distance.
Lara Carrica followed with 6 points and 8 rebounds
Camaryn Villalpando added 5 points and 6 rebounds

The Lady Rockets shot 32% for the game including 29% from distance.

Academy
Sophie Long finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds
Kelsey Crist finished with 7 points and 5 boards as well
Krystal Brown added 4 points

The Lady Chargers shot 24% from the field.

NEXT UP

Another National Championship For Our State

I know this is off topic but our state just got another National Championship yesterday. NM National Championships are precious and few for sure. The NMJC Lady Thunderbirds won the National Indoor Championship for indoor track and field. They were ranked number one going in. Congratulations to them and to NMJC in Hobbs for getting yet another national championship. And congratulations to Head Coach Keith Blackwell.

Elite Eight Recap: Hope Christian Rolls

FINAL: Hope Christian 71 Sandia Prep 27

RECAP
From the get-go Hope Christian put on display why they're the number one team in Class 4A. Exposing a clear height advantage Hope jumped out to a 25-6 lead in the first. The Lady Huskies defense kept the Sundevils from penetration and made them settle from distance. Unfortunately for Sandia Prep, they would have serious shooting woes from distance including from one of the state's leading scorer, Madie Trainor who finished her final game with only 1 point. Both teams played their benches through the second half until Coach Rael subbed in his seniors for one last possession late in the fourth quarter.

STATS
Hope Christian
Hannah Valencia led all scorers with 13 points.
Alivia Lewis added 10 and 7 rebounds
Haile Chase-The-Boy tallied 10 of her own, including 8 in the fourth.

Hope Christian shot 42% from the field, 47% from distance.

Sandia Prep
Mari Yepa led her team with 7 points and 6 rebounds
Alicia Barela followed with 5 points
Samantha Jeffries added 4 points
Madie Trainor finished with 1 point on 0-for-10 shooting from the field including 0-for-6 from the 3point line.

Sundevils shot 22% from the field, 9% from distance.

NEXT UP
#8 Sandia Prep wraps their season up 18-10.

#1 Hope Christian awaits some familiar district opponents in #4 Portales and #5 Moriarty for the 4A semifinals at 8:00 AM on Thursday.

Where are you with recruiting??

Young men, juniors, all across the country who want to play football at the next level are ACTIVELY going after those coveted scholarships. If you have not started the process NOW is the time! Don't wait until after your Senior football season to go up to your coach asking him to try to get you recruited as that is way to late. Here is where you should be at right now:

What you should have done:

1. You should have sat down with your parents and talked to them about where you want to go and have at least an idea of what you want to maybe study. Based on this, you should have made a list of schools you are interested in attending at least 10 DI FBS schools, 10 DI FCS, 10 DII and any DIII or community/junior colleges.

2. You should have registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

3. You should have taken the ACT/SAT or at least be registered to take it in April.

4. You should have finished your highlight film and asked others (ie coaches) to look it over.

5. You should have created a profile sheet/football resume.

6. You should have started sending out emails (with your profile sheet and/or contact info) to the coaches of the schools you are interested in.

What you should be doing next:

1. Looking for Rivals and/or Nike combines to get your name out there.

2. Talking with your parents about which football camps you would like to attend at those schools you are interested in.

3. Double checking with your school councilor to insure you will have all the classes needed by the NCAA. Get a digital transcript from them (or a hard copy scanned to a .pdf) ready to shoot out on your next round of update emails to schools.

Tens of thousands of other football players around the country who want to play college ball are at this point right now. How far along are you????

Elite Eight: Quick Tidbits

Of the 24 Elite Eight games, 10 will be rematches from this season. Of those 10, five will be against district opponents.

Class 6A

Hobbs-Volcano Vista
The last post-season meeting between Hobbs and Volcano was when they were the 4-seed and 5-seed respectively. Volcano Vista won that meeting by 2 points and went on to win the state championship.

Carlsbad-Sandia
The roles have reversed and Sandia has an opportunity for some post-season revenge. The last two times these two teams met, Carlsbad would upset Sandia as an 11-seed then as a 10-seed the following year.

West Mesa-Eldorado
Eldorado and West Mesa’s last playoff meeting was in last year’s first round with the Lady Eagles taking the game by 16 points. This season though West Mesa got the win in the Metro Tournament by 5-points, their first win (many believe) ever against Eldorado.

Las Cruces-La Cueva
La Cueva is 8-1 dating back to January 2007 against Las Cruces. Last win for Las Cruces was last January by 2 points on the road at La Cueva.

Class 5A

Roswell-Lovington
Both teams met in last year’s tournament in the #2 and #15 matchup. Roswell continued their winning streak against Lovington this season, winning all three meetings by margins of 30, 25, and 38 points.

Los Lunas-Kirtland Central
In their last two meetings, neither Los Lunas nor Kirtland Central broke 50 points. Eerily enough is that the score for both games were exactly the same (49-43) and they split 1-1.

Espanola Valley-Gallup
Espanola Valley has been eliminated by Gallup for the last three state tournaments. But the Lady Sundevils did end their losing streak this season against the Lady Bengals with a win at home by 8 points.

Albuquerque Academy-Goddard
It was a low scoring affair the last time Goddard and Academy squared off last January (2016) as neither team broke 40 points. Katherine Kolker and Sophie Long were scoring leaders for each of their teams.

Class 4A

Hope Christian-Sandia Prep
Sandia Prep is 2-24 against Hope Christian dating back to January 2007. Last win against Hope was back in 2014 by two points.

Shiprock-Navajo Prep
Shiprock has 9 straight wins against the Lady Eagles of Navajo Prep dating back to January 2009. Closest game this season between the two teams was a 12-point win by Shiprock at Navajo Prep.

Robertson-West Las Vegas
Dating back to February 2007, West Las Vegas owns the head-to-head record against Robertson 19-12. Robertson has led this past season’s series though at 2-1. West’s most recent win came in the district tournament championship against the Lady Cards'.

Portales-Moriarty
The Fightin’ Lady Pintos did end an 8-game losing streak against the Lady Rams this season with a 38-30 win at Portales. That losing streak dates back to December 2012. Moriarty is 3-9 versus Portales dating back to December 2006.
