Buy, Sell or Hold: Most Likely To Dethrone Cleveland

Most Likely To Dethrone Cleveland
J Grine of NMPreps.com

The Cleveland Storm had the perfect storm nearly six months ago when the claimed the 2015 New Mexico state championship. Well, the sun has come from the clouds and it's time to focus on defending their title.

However, the staff at NMPreps.com will focus on the buy or sell of teams that can make sure their is not a repeated weather alert.

With this feature we looked at the 3-most likely contenders and can only buy, sell or hold for each of the three.

Mayfield Trojans: Buy

The Mayfield Trojans football program is likely one of the most recognized names in the state of New Mexico and after a semi-final loss they are hardly poised to for a drop-off. The offense is loaded and might be one of the best of the returning teams. We don't have to mention the name but running back Isaac Vance returns as the most likely to take home the NMPreps.com Mr. Football award in 2016.

Rio Rancho Rams: Hold

The City of Vision continues to put out the top talent in the state of New Mexico and if any team can match what Cleveland did it will be the team that last won the title. The Rams are loaded with returning stars but might be needing to answer some question marks at Quarterback. That is the sole reason to hold and doubt right now. Head coach David Howes' team has some serious advantages though with NMPreps.com Mr. Football candidate Josh Foley who rushed for 1,081-yards last season.

Eldorado Eagles: Sell

The Eldorado Eagles will have their shot again this season in a question mark district. Why question mark? Well, Clovis brings the history but a handful of question mark teams that could either be in conversation as a boom or bust type of teams. Reasons to trust them returning into the final game is the level of talent returning as Elias Baker (No. 8 Returning Top 60 Prospects in 6A), Bryce Wade (No. 11) and Adam Clark (No. 15) all come back. The reason to doubt and why we are selling right now is the loss of some key pieces like next level player Noah Sweitzer along with replacing quarterback Jayce Jackson.

Logan Hertz of Rio Rancho

Top Five OL's

1. Dylan Weaver, Sr, OL, Piedra Vista HS (Farmington, NM):
The 6-foot-6, 270 pound OL has committed to Texas Tech after being coveted by New Mexico, San Diego State and Georgia State. Weaver's stock jump drastically this summer and could be one of the biggest steals by the Big-12 school. We will see test for Weaver as Piedra Vista moves to 6A football this season from 5A.

2. Logan Hertz, Sr, OL, Rio Rancho HS (Rio Rancho, NM): The program continues to produce some of thefts offensive linemen in the state of New Mexico. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound OL has several offers from Montana (D-1), Western State Colorado and Eastern New Mexico among others. Hertz, is one to likely have his stock rise even more during the season.

3. Adam Clark, Sr, OL, Eldorado HS (Albuquerque, NM): With plenty of playing experience the 6-foot-3, 255 pound tackle will be another one to watch this season. The Eagles reached the 2015 State Championship and return a wealth of talent including OL's this season.

4. Marcus Bramwell, Sr, OL, Artesia HS (Artesia, NM): 6-foot-4, 265 pound, started all year at left tackle for Artesia, coaches really high on him. Plays for a championship program and Bramwell might be one of the more underrated prospects that will have to prove his stock all season long.

5. Daimon Altamirano, Sr, OL, Cleveland HS (Rio Rancho, NM): Altamirano, strong as an OX bench pressing 335-pounds being in the 1,000 pound club since his freshman season. Another OL to see his stock rise and could be another D-1 player for the Storm.

On the Rise

6. Bryce Wade, Sr, OL, Eldorado HS (Albuquerque, NM): The 6-foot-7 OL is on the rise and the second Eagle on the board. He has an offer from New Mexico Highlands but could see more roll in after this season. On the rise and a name to remember this season.

7. Triston Olson, Sr, OL, Las Cruces HS (Las Cruces, NM): 6-foot-2, 265

8. Hayden Wilson, Sr, OL, Cleveland, HS (Rio Rancho, NM): 6-foot-5, 265.

9. Caleb Dimas, Sr, OL, Manzano HS (Albuquerque, NM): 6-foot-0, 245 pound linemen

10. Joseph Hernandez, Sr, OL, Las Cruces HS (Las Cruces, NM): Started every game for Las Cruces.

Weekend Recruiting Notebook, 10 D1 Offers

Henderson: June 26th Recruiting Notebook, 10 D1 Offers

Recruiting for high school football prospects in New Mexico this summer has been incredible to say the least. Over the years we've had a few guys pull offers during the spring and summer, but nothing like we've seen this year. We have to rewind all the way to 2011, which was the last time New Mexico had 10 Prospects Sign D1, we've already matched that number offer wise and it's only June.

The Class of 2011 featured Notre Dame Commit Matthew Hegarty out of Aztec, Texas Tech Commit Ronnie Daniels out of La Cueva, Michigan State Commit Matthew Rammando out of Mayfield, and Colorado Commit Tyler McCulloch out of Eldorado. Monster year right? We'll this year is catching up and it starting with Los Lunas Running Back O'maury Samuels committing to Michigan. You can say Samuels heading to Michigan is the biggest New Mexico commitment since Eldorado's Zach Gentry committing to Michigan in 2015.

Two additional prospects have committed already, 6-foot-6, 280 pound offensive tackle Dylan Weaver out of Piedra Vista committed to Texas Tech and 6-foot-2, 225 pound Matthew Young out of Onate committed to New Mexico State.

That leaves 7 in-state prospects (Scroll down to see the complete list of prospects that have D1 Offers) that have D1 offers that are still uncommitted. The next few months are going to be fun recruiting wise to say the least, watching these prospects make their college decision.

This Past Week

This past week was 8 in-state prospects received offers. Kent State offered Mayfield Running Back Isaac Vance. Vance also holds an offer from the New Mexico State Aggies.

"It's a huge blessing. I am originally from that area (Ohio) and having the possible opportunity to head back home is very exciting. I have been in contact with multiple coaches on the staff, but Coach Needham (Defensive coordinator) is the one who officially offered me the scholarship," said Vance.

The 5-foot-8, 160 pound back who is also hearing from CAL and Texas Tech ran for 2,067 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior breaking 7 school records in just 11 games.

New Mexico State Offered 4 in-state prospects during their camp this weekend. Volcano Vista Receiver David Cormier who also has an offer from New Mexico and interest from Wake Forest picked up an offer from the Aggies. "I like the staff, good coaching staff, but I have not been to Las Cruces enough to know that much about it. I worked with Coach Martin, Coach Cory, and Coach McKeethan this weekend as well as Coach Spiff." Cormier is 6-foot-3, 207 pounds and caught for 977-yards last year with 9 touchdowns.

The Aggies also offered Los Lunas Linebacker Trevor Brohard. The 6-foot-4, 210 pound prospect now holds offers from New Mexico State, Western Colorado, and New Mexico Highlands. Los Lunas will now enter the 2016 football season with two D1 prospects, no other 5A program can say that to open the season.

Mayfield Quarterback Torry Locklin out of the Class of 2018 was offered by the Aggies as well as Mayfield Receiver Gaven Swinson. Locklin played quarterback for the Trojans late in the year when starter Joe Ray Valencia went down with an injury. During the first round of the New Mexico State Football Tournament last year, Locklin threw for 169-yards and two touchdowns against Atrisco Hertiage.

During the Quarterfinals against Clovis in the he ran for 95-yards and two more touchdowns in route to the Trojan's 21-3 victory over the Wildcats. Swinson at 6-foot-4, 210 pound receiver is being recruited by Texas Tech and also Oklahoma. Last year Gaven caught for 1,300-yards and scored 11 touchdowns. This summer he's been clocked running a 4.5 40-time. Mayfield will enter the 2016 season with 3 D1 prospects, most out of any other Class 6A Program.

Rio Rancho Running Back Josh Foley picked up yet another offer this week from CSU Pueblo. The 5-foot-11, 195 pound back now holds offers from New Mexico Highlands, Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico, and CSU Pueblo.

Jacob Barnhill out of Sandia High School was offered by Adams State and has turned plenty of heads this summer on the recruiting trail.

Copa America Centenario

Well its almost Friday and the CA Centenario kicks off with the USA v Colombia...a rematch of the (in)famous 1994 game in which the US won on the unfortunate own goal that cost the Colombian player his life. The US might have some motivation to avenge being knocked out of the Olympics this year.

Each team has so many talking points. I hope the rating are high and that the US performs well enough to keep everyones interest and that they dont implode early and set the national morale back a notch or two.

Messi Retires from National team!!

Shocking if true..
I cant even pretend to imagine the weight on his shoulders. There was no way he could ever live up to that pressure from the national team. He has had a long, sometimes edgy relationship with the Argentinian fans...many never really considered him "Argentinian" since he left to join Barcelona at age 7???

He got them to 4 major finals and went 0-for. He probably sees this as a good breaking up point and maybe as a way to release the team from his shadow...maybe they win the next major event without him??

Copa America - Final Four

Well, the US played a much improved game vs Colombia. Hard to tell if it was the addition of the three missing starters, the attempt to bounce back from the mauling vs Argentina or a combo of both. I know we're American where if you're not first, you're last, but 4th place in a tourney with ARG, BRA, URU, MEX, Chile isnt really too bad.

As far as tonights final...I think Chile can pull this off. They just outrun and outpress their opposition. They dont over rely on Vidal and Sanchez, where as ARG places a heavy weight on Messi. Last year they went to PK shoot out in the standard Copa America tournament. But if Americans want to see world class, top level soccer, this is the game to watch.
