6A Summer Buzz: Making The Cut

6A Summer Buzz: Making The Cut
Grine of NMPreps.com

It's Friday and that means we bring another feature as I look aimlessly into the magical crystal ball that we keep in the basement of NMPreps.com. If you have been following along we have handed out 7 spots in the 2016 State Playoffs.

It is part of our way too early look at the teams predicted to do well when the football season kicks-off. Several new coaches, returning prospects and player rankings are taken into account.

Grine:
Which of Last Year's Cellar Teams Make the Playoffs in 2016? | What Teams Return To The Playoffs in 2016?

Recap
Cleveland (IN)
Mayfield (IN)

Carlsbad (IN)
Las Cruces (IN)
Rio Rancho (IN)
Eldorado (IN)
Clovis (IN)

Overview: One team comes from the group that didn't make the playoffs last season as I took the reach on Carlsbad in the second year under Bradley.

More IN, Less Bubble

Volcano Vista Hawks (6-5): Early Buy

The Volcano Vista Hawks are our 8th team on the board in terms of who I feel confident in making the state tournament come November. Why? Well, I've leaned heavy on defensive returners for teams to make the playoffs in 2016. I flip the script here and give the nod to offensive duo in Chris Streetz (RB) who ran for over 500-yards and ranked 33rd on 2017 returning prospects. Next, we go to the 5th ranked prospect from the 2017 in receiver David Cormier who had over 659-yards and 5 touchdowns a year ago. You also have to consider a talented 2018 class with a defensive power in Joren Dickey who recorded near close to double digits in sacks.

Centennial Hawks (12-1): Even Buy

Centennial is looking to capture some of its 2015 magic playing for the 5A State Championship. However, there will be an adjustment period but to say this team can't win 6/7 games next season will be hard to imagine. It might be a reach of a buy for some and a lot of that will come down to the play of the Hawks starting quarterback in Dante Lopez (Ranked 6th in 5A to end last season) who threw for 2,000-yards and 30 touchdowns. Combine that for a 1-2 punch wit Junior Pena a receiver who caught for 662-yards and 12-touchdowns, ranked 7th on the Top 100 returning prospects.

Valley Vikings (3-7): Automatic Buy

Fresh off a quick break from carrying the load of a head coach Judge Chavez takes the reins as the new head coach of the Valley Vikings. Required to give an automatic bid to each district champion we go with a familiar choice in the Vikings. However, this district will be more competitive this season with a growing Highland and Albuquerque High programs. Head coach Chavez has done big things with quality quarterbacks and he returns one in Isaiah Chavez who passed for 1540 yards last season.

More Bubble, But IN

Onate Knights (4-6): Trend Up Buy

The Onate Knights had success under first-year head coach Brent Jaques and we predict they continue this up trend. It was difficult but we picked them over Hobbs but it was close with the fact that they will be district foes this season and Onate will quickly have to forget 41-21 loss to the Eagles last season. So now to why we gave them the nod, we head to the defensive side of the ball. Forest McKee (LB/#2), James Martin (DL/#27) and Jamie Villela (DB/#39) are just three of a handful of prospects returning from the Top-60 players in 2015.

La Cueva Bears (3-7): Buy Low

Okay, the La Cueva Bears are the biggest "bubblish" of teams right now. They won 3-games last season and play in an improved district with the likes of Clovis, Eldorado and the surprise out right now in Sandia. Much like Onate they have to beat out a team in district to get the bid. Chris Campbell (QB/#36) returns on the offensive side of the ball, throwing for 700-yards last season. Plenty from the class of 2018 returning that could have an impact on this season

More OUT, Less Bubble

Hobbs, Sandia and Cibola: These three will be looking for that IN-win all season but Hobbs lost some offensive weapons. Sandia the biggest surprise that I wouldn;t be surprised if they made it. Cibola, I like coach Rod Williams and the RB but man the district only gets better with Piedra Vista.

Uncertainty

Piedra Vista, Albuquerque, Atrisco Heritage, Gadsden, Manzano: Manzano has several interesting pieces that make me think they should be in the group above. Piedra Vista has some serious returners that are being recruited by Texas Tech but the giants of Rio Rancho, Cleveland and others in 1-6A await.

Summer Buzz: Which of Last Year's Cellar Teams Make the Playoffs?

Summer Buzz: Which of Last Year's Cellar Teams Make the Playoffs in 2016?
Grine of NMPreps.com

Before we head into the summer session we get an early look at those teams that could be on the buy early into the preseason. Each year most teams that stumble in the previous fall hope it was a one-year slip as they have what it takes to return the following fall. Or maybe it was the cellar teams looking to make a leap into the next tier.

12 of 24 teams in the big school division reach the playoffs and we take a look at the 12 (or so depending on reclassification) that didn't make the cut a year back. Most of the time you will not find them in the rankings and for most you won't.

The Cellars (0-2 Win Teams)

Santa Fe (0-10): Sell

For now the ceiling appears to be low due to the football interest at Santa Fe High along with the strength of the District 1-6A teams. They played with the likes of the Cleveland Storm who are coming off a State Championship. Also, in that company is the 2014 state champions in the Rio Rancho Rams. Throw in the Cibola Cougars who are flourishing under Rod Williams along with the talent that seems to always be in the waiting room wearing black and silver of Volcano Vista. However, they have made the move into District 2-6A and that could be a good thing for anyone looking to escape 1-6A. Well, not so fast. Now they battle Eldorado, Clovis, Manzano and Sandia teams that were all playoff teams last season.

Only place to look is up after an 0-10 season, right? Well, on the hopeful side you say yes. You know that they have a head coach that works his tail off but where to look is the right question. Well, we will attempt to give direction. Ranked in the Top 62 players returning in 6A next season is quarterback Adrian Blea who threw for over 500-yards as a junior last season.

Why the sell? Well, if we are looking at teams that missed the playoffs in 2015 in hopes of a playoff run in 2016 it's a no. However, I could buy on the fact that they won't be 0-10 and you can let me hear it if I am wrong. In a best case scenario I could see them getting a win on September 9th at home against Taos or on September 30th also at home against Los Alamos.

Rio Grande (0-10): Sell

Much like Santa Fe, likely more, at Rio Grande you have to battle with more than showing up to practice with football minded students. The list could go-on as you fight to keep players in pads the entire season, you fight to change the culture that hasn't been built with football in their blood. I should know, my family runs deep in the Valley and I love the Valley. However, football is far from the mindset of most.

Another cellar team that returns from an 0-10 season. So where do we look from here? Well, they made the best decision by bringing in Sam Mascarenas last summer. A+ grade right there. Now it comes to searching for the group of kids that take pride in changing the recent downfalls. The district is favorable, for the most part as they play in 5-6A with the likes of Albuquerque High, Atrisco Heritage Academy, Valley and West Mesa and I mean no disrespect but not the most difficult of districts.

Why the Sell? This is just the start of a long foundation building process that is going to happen in the Valley. What is the old saying, "Rome wasn't built in a day?". Well, this will take longer. No player returns in the Top 62 returning players in 6A. The schedule does have a date with Bernalillo to open the season on September 17th that could get the season off on the right foot.

Gadsden (1-10): Sell

Will I buy any of the four teams in the cellar? More bad news here as the Panthers play in arguably the best District in 6A football in terms of championship history longevity. Las Cruces and Mayfield are two powers that loom over the district and state of New Mexico.

Gadsden did sneak a win last season and we haven't see a schedule (or I haven't yet) of the 2016 slate outside of EP Cathedral (TX), Onate, Mayfield and Carlsbad. Add new district members Centennial and Hobbs to create a bigger gap for them to make any jump past one win.

Why the sell? Well with Santa Fe they have two scheduled high possibility win games that we talked about along with a Top-62 returning quarterback prospect. Rio Grande has positives in district and head coach but still a big project. Gadsden doesn't have a friendly schedule and I didn't see any players ranked in the Top 100. Maybe, I'll see that prospect at the Elite Combine this summer down in Las Cruces and could change my hard sell.

Highland (2-8): Sell

Yes, I am selling right now but 2-wins is a huge accomplishment for the Hornets football program. That alone is a buy in terms of other things outside of this feature.

The Hornets play in a district that could provide some help, getting out of the district with Eldorado, Sandia and Manzano helps. Now they go back to face Rio Grande, West Mesa, Atrisco and Albuquerque High. For the most part that is a positive.

Why the hard sell? Well, they don't appear to have any Ranked Prospects (hopefully some venture down to the NMPrpes.com Elite Combine) and they play in a District that I see it hard for them to get a W. Their schedule is not completed online but have games with West Mesa and Rio Grande that could provide "winnable" next them.

Carlsbad (2-9): Buy

Yes, we know that football runs deep in the southeast corner of New Mexico. They do it the right way when it comes to school pride and town pride. However, Carlsbad has been the program that maybe sits on the sidelines as others carry blue trophies. Well, much like Rio Grande, they made a A+ with extra credit hire in hiring Gary Bradley away from Farmington High School. Bradley won a state title in a basketball rich corner of the state.

This cellar team will only be a cellar team for one season as they look to be much improved in year two of the Bradley era. Does this sell mean an over .500 season and playoff birth? Maybe, maybe not and that answer is terrible but look at this schedule with the likes of Artesia, Clovis, Goddard, Cibola, Mayfield, Centennial, Onate, Las Cruces, Gadsden and Hobbs. In a best case scenario I could see a 4-6 win range but if this era really kicks into high gear I could lean to the 6-win side of things with a playoff birth.

So what am I banking on? Does the basketball guy have a true reason why? Well, maybe (yes, I love that word today). They have Bradley and that alone should give them a notch on the positive. Next, they return Jaykan Willis (2018) on the defensive end, a 6A 3rd Team All Defense along with Nate Arrington (2018) a strong safety also making the 3rd Team All Defense. For now, still too long away, I say buy.

Next Tier (3-6 Win Teams; No Playoffs)

La Cueva (3-7): Buy or Sell making the playoffs in 2016?
Valley (3-7): Buy or Sell making the playoffs in 2016?
Albuquerque (4-6): Buy or Sell making the playoffs in 2016?
Onate (4-6): Buy or Sell making the playoffs in 2016?
West Mesa (4-6): Buy or Sell making the playoffs in 2016?

5A: Which Cellar Teams Make The Playoffs in 2016
Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we continue our features on our crystal ball predicting the 12-teams that we make the state tournament in 2016 - our early look that will likely change (several times).

We first released the 6A one on May 1st and today we take a look at the 5A cellar teams from last season and decide if any could break through into the state playoffs.

The Cellars (0-2 Win Teams)

Santa Teresa (1-9): Sell

The problem is inexperience creates narratives, and it is somewhat difficult to escape from this. The good news about that narrative is that the following year - 2016? - they will play with plenty of experience. Robynn Juarez, a senior, was the starting quarterback with 955-yards last season along with running for 505-yards on the ground. His top three receivers all return in Domonick Dozal (2018), Carlos Gonzales (2017) and Samuel Martinez (2017). Dozal, only a junior-to-be led the team with 198-yards.

Looking at the different story angles you could talk yourself into liking the Desert Warriors and what they return this season. The bad news? They now play in a district with two teams that drop down from 6A football with the realignment of districts. One of those teams is already being considered the favorite to play for the 5A title in Alamogordo. This is the reason to sell but we debated to hold because I am buying on the fact they win 4/5 games and anything could happen if they catch a little momentum.

Lovington (1-9): Hold

The 'time' are definitely different in Wildcat County as the football team has fallen deep into the cellar. There was a time when we wouldn't imagine them to fall into the cellar with a 1-win season. The good news is the only direction is up - right? Well, they have a solid starting spot with Brooke Quinones (No. 23 NMPreps.com Top 25 Returning Players in 5A for 2017). Quinones threw for 1,176-yards and 10 touchdowns.

Well the reason to hold and not buy or sell is the fact that we don't know what we are going to get out of the mystery Wildcats in 2016. Quinones has impressive numbers and you have to remember he only played half of the season. They have a new head coach that is new to the area.

Valencia (2-8): Buy

Well, when you have money that has to be spent we decided of the three the squad to buy would be the Valencia Jaguars. We've talked about identity and we know they love to run the football and the good news is they have returning players to fill that identity. They have a year under the belt of state championship winning head coach Collin Justiss.

Returning for the Jaguars is a trio of running backs who are looking to take the Jaguars back into the playoffs, but this will still be a tall order in the new district. First, lets take a view of the backs Zach Lowe a senior who ran for 658-yards, Gabriel Kline right behind him with 587-yards and Jorge Lopez a junior with 246-yards. Right now they might be middle of the pack in the new district this district could be open for sale as well with the Valencia County teams, Grants and St. Pius X.
