Team Legacy

Going off of Kyle's top 3 teams thread.

How did your favorite team(s) become your favorite team(s)?

I have some pretty funny stories about a few of mine.

Dallas and L.A.Lakers were passed down from my father. He loves pro football and basketball and we've been die hard fans ever since I can remember.

Miami Hurricanes: I loved their helmets as a kid. When I was around 8, they played Michigan and I thought to myself who ever wins this game (battle of the helmets) will be my team. Miami won and it's been about the [[_]] ever since.

Kansas bball: I was in pee-wee league bball and wore the #25. My championship game was the day after the national championship between KU and OU. The stud for KU was Danny Manning, who also happened to wear the #25. Rock Chalk Jayhawk

Boston Red Sox: Baseball was the least favorite of my dad's sports. I never really had a team growing up. I liked players more than teams. Everyone around here seemed to be a Braves fan because they were always on TV, but I could never could get into them.
In the mid to late 90s the Yankees rose to power and a lot of people were jumping on the bandwagon. I personally never could stand the Yankees. Naturally I gravitated to their arch rival, Boston. They happened to have a left handed 1st basemen named Mo Vaughn who wore #42. I also was a left handed 1st basemen who wore #42. It was a natural fit. So in 1995 I started my love for the Sox.

Week One Pitching...what to do

Sitting in the office yesterday talking with the guys...going over pitching scenarios.

If you are facing that team like Sandia, El Do, Hope, Carlsbad, Academy... do you throw your number 3 against their #1 and try to win a low scoring game? And if you lose you have a possible upper hand on Saturday. Worked well for Sandia last year.

One thought that came up is if you have that power #1 do you start him game two Saturday morning so it's easier to come back the same day on a low pitch count. Maybe he only throws 85 pitches in game 2...that leaves him ready to come back and close game 3. If he throws 85 on Friday that soreness will be a lot worse on Saturday with a nights rest.

Of course there are a ton of factors that determine this. I just don't think anybody is consistent enough offensively to have real confidence that you are going to walk out and just over power a team with the bats.

He just posted on twitter that he is excited to be headed to San Francisco tomorrow for Rokkie Camp with the 49ers! Hegarty is a 2011 graduate from Aztec that played Offensive Line for Notre Dame and Oregon.

Drove up to the four corners area to watch him play a few times

Top Programs the last 10 years

Does this change possibly over the next few weekends?

No particular order...
La Cueva
Rio Rancho
PV
Academy
Goddard
Sandia Prep
Cobre

I'm sure others have arguments...Does anybody want to do a Top 5 in order? What meets the criteria? Reg. Season (Goddard), Semi's, Finalist, Champs?

I think El Do pops in if they make the finals again...I just don't know how many Semi Finals they made besides 2015/16

Summer Buzz: Six of Twelve We Guarantee To Return To The Playoffs

Six of Twelve We Guarantee To Return To The Playoffs
J Grine of NMPreps.com

Today, we continue our look into the future and the 2016 New Mexico High School football season. If you have been following along we took a look at the teams who missed the playoffs last season in our Cellar Teams That Will Make The Playoffs.

12 of 24 teams make the New Mexico High School state football playoffs each season and today we take our prediction on 6 of the returning 12 that will go dancing again.

More: Buy or Sell Cellar Teams for 2016

Cleveland (State Champs)

Making the State Championship is tough to do in consecutive seasons and good thing we are not making a prediction on that today. However, when you look take a look at the City of Vision, you automatically predict them playing past the final game of the season.

Why? First you have to look at the number four returning prospect in the 2017 class, Adam Cook. Cook a dominating TE with 406-yards last season will look to lead the way on offense along with OL Daimon Altamirano. Altamirano is the seventh ranked prospect from the 2017 class.

Mayfield (Semi-Finals)

Tradition never graduates? Well, how about the tradition of never missing the playoffs. It's not rocket science when we 'guarantee' the Trojans will return to another playoff season.

Why? The Trojans offense will continue to thrive as long as Issac Vance is healthy. Vance, is returning after posting a 2,200-yard rushing season and scoring 30-touchdowns as a junior. Not much else to add along with Vance being the number returning prospect from the 2017 class.

Las Cruces (Semi-Finals)

Well, in Las Cruces you are almost guranteed to be playing in the playoffs if you have Blue and Red as your favorite team colors. The Bulldawgs however have several key positions to replace along with one of the best high school football coaches. However, to say they won't be in the playoffs.... well that's close to impossible.

Why? The sixth ranked returning prospect from 2017 is OL Tristan Olson a 6-foot-2, 265 pound lineman that will be ready to lead the Bulldawgs into a new era.

Rio Rancho (Quarterfinals)

Well, we are four teams in and two cities deep of our six teams that will play in the playoffs next season. The 2014 State Champion Rio Rancho Rams return some excitement in Josh Foley along with a plethora of depth on defense.

Why? Well, we mentioned Foley but the depth on defense s led by linebackers Elijah Goodwin and Vincent Palmeri, two prospects on the rise and ranked 17th and 18th respectfully.

Eldorado Eagles (State Runner-Up)

The Eagles made the run to the title game and have been a power waiting in the wings. The team is loaded with talent returning and features several prospects ranked in the Top 60 returning players for next season. You have to like the Eagles to be a threat to return to the final game.

Why? Fullback Elias Baker, Adam Clark (OL), and Dominic Sandoval (ATH) are only three of the reasons why the Eagles will be just as good this season. All three ranked in the Top 20 players and making them a team to not take lightly in 2016.

Clovis (Quarterfinals)

Is this the final ride that we are seeing for the legendary head coach? With two legendary head coaches stepping down this summer we wouldn't be surprised. Well, this ride won't end without a playoff run and they have a few reasons why they make the return.

Why? Clovis runningback Micah Gray returns after a 1,057 rushing season and looks to lead the offense this season after graduating a stud QB and other pieces.

What Would Happen?

What would happen if former Las Cruces Head Coach Jim Miller and former Artesia Head Coach Cooper Henderson took over the Santa Fe Football Program in its current state? Last year the Demons went 0-10.

Could these two coaches who have a combined 21 state football championships turn Santa Fe Football into a Powerhouse Program with 3-years?

81. Aaron Bean - Atrisco Heritage Academy - 2016 - Another guard in this group of 85-81 as Bean flew somewhat under the radar but had some quality performances during the Jaguars run mid-season.

81 b. Casimiro Fresquez - Mora - 2016 - A solid shooting guard this season and led the Rangers to the title game. Fresquez averaged around 20 points per contest.

82. Jared Sessions - Alamogordo - 2016 - A point guard that is quick off the dribble. Played well this season for the Tigers making plays from the backcourt.

83. Garett Smothermon - Roswell - 2017 - A shooting guard with great confidence and helps Roswell spread the floor with his shooting abilities. The junior is a top clutch shooting guard in the classification.

84. Ralph Cueto - Carlsbad - 2016 - A senior point guard for a top ranked Carlsbad team. Cueto, only at 5-9 but makes big shots, plays D and runs the floor well.

85. Triston McCarty - La Cueva - 2017 - The point guard for the Bears is a flashy little guard with solid decision making skills. One of those point guards that can make a huge play for you.

#90-#86 - March 3rd - Player Rankings Homepage

86. Tennessee Owens - Centennial - 2017 - The more that we see Owens the more we are likely to see his name rise. The point guard can score when needed but more of the distributor.

86. b. Augustine Larranaga - Capital - 2016 - A wing like many that top the 100 best players list that that plays well off the ball but can board, get into the right position and shoots well.

87. Kevin Medrano - Gadsden - 2017 - A powerful wing that can score and strong in and around the basket. Medrano is a name little mentioned but a great compliment to Tomas Cano.

87 b. Jerome Arroyos - Capital - 2016 - A wing player that gets it done for the Jaguars. Not flashy but definitely a top 100 player, has basketball smarts, and could muscle opposing guards to the bucket off the dribble.

88. Jacob Esquivel - Lordsburg - 2017 - Esquivel is part of the sweet shooting Mavericks of Lordsburg. A guard that has gone off this season several times and a name to know this post season.

88. B. Nathan Phipps - Texico - 2018 - Big man, much like other powerful posts on the list. Cuold be one of the best forwards in 3A basketball this season.

89. Chris Mesquita - Roswell - 2017 - Mesquita makes up part of a Roswell team that is ranked #1 in 5A basketball. Mesquita is in the athlete category doing a little of everything.

90. Duece Goodrich - Hobbs - 2017 - Goodrich another athletic wing that does well in the Eagles offense. Goodrich has averages of 7.4 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game.

#95-#91 - March 2nd - Player Rankings Homepage

91. Cal Villarael - Goddard - 2017 - A high energy 10 point, 5 rebound, 5 steal type of player who basically could do it all and does it well for the Rockets this season.

92. Bishop Woodruff - Alamogordo - 2017 - Another talented junior that has played well inside and out for the Tigers this season. Around 10 points per contest for the Tigers.

93. Cael Apodaca - Highland - 2017 - A talented junior forward who could be higher on the list and by the start of next season he likely will. Will need to be more consistent in 2017 but overall a talent.

94. Nick Trujillo - Belen - Under the radar this season but another leader for his team this season Trujillo will be a name to reckon with this post season for the Eagles. A double figure scorer.

95. Marcus Hodge - Hobbs - 2017 - Only a junior Hodge will likely be a name that we hear of more next season. An athletic wing that can score, had 12 in the district championship game is another player that will need a big post season to help the Eagles advance.

95 b. Jolante Gray - Volcano Vista - 2019 - It's hard to find things you don't like about this freshman. Size, athleticism and can play hoops.

#100-#96 - March 1st - Player Rankings Headquarters

96. Raymond Saucedo - Lordsburg - 2017 - Saucedo is part of a talented Lordsburg team that is the favorite in 3A basketball.

97. Joshua Saenz - Silver - 2016 - Saenz is in double figures this season and a leader for a top 4A team in Silver High School.

98. Keegan Acosta - Piedra Vista - 2016 - At 15.7 points per game the Panthers guard will be in consideration for 5A post season awards.

99. Dominic Roybal - Pojoaque Valley - 2017 - A solid shooting guard for the Elks this season. Roybal around 12 points per game this season will be a force this post season.

99. B Tyler Ferguson - Tucumcari - 2016 - A guard from 3A that attacks well and makes decisions in the frontcourt well.

100. Kameron Valencia - Eldorado - 2019 - More of an upside pick but Valencia is surely a Top 100 player in the state of New Mexico. Didn't get many varsity minutes but trust us he will be there by next season.

Picking 5A In Our Crystal Ball for 2016/2017

Picking 5A In Our Crystal Ball
Joshua J Grine

Today, we take a swirl around the off-season and what to look forward to next season. Please don't miss a beat this off-season as the NMPreps.com team will travel to Team Camps, release stories and have more rankings

Final Four Predictions In April

Los Lunas Tigers (2015/2016 Record: 21-10) - The Tigers will be the favorite to most people who watch and cover 5A basketball. We won't disagree, argue or debate that topic unless you think they won't reach the Final Four. I will keep in short and sweet. They return four Top 100 players, head coach Travis Julian is Top-4 top coaches in 5A basketball and they won't have to live on an activity bus in 2017 (new district helps).
Projected Seed: 1-seed.
Crystal Ball: Beat 16 seed by 30, easily beat a project 8-seed and head to Final Four.

Farmington Scorpions (2015/2016 Record: 23-5) - Right now they look to be the clear favorite to win District 1-5A. The big question is do they shake the early upset from the 2016 State Tournament? Prediction says yes they do. Why? The program continues to excel under head coach Paul Corley with back-to-back 20 win seasons. They have improved each season from 15 wins in 2014, 20 in 2015 and 23 last season. The return 6-foot-7 post David Riley and could be the in the 3-5 seed range again.
Projected Seed: 2-seed.
Crystal Ball: Struggle but beat 15-seed. Have a quick turnaround beating 7 seed.

Alamogordo Tigers (2015/2016 Record: 9-19) - A 9-win team in the Final Four? Okay maybe not the fan pick on this one and we might be reechoing just a tad on this pick. First they hired a two-time state champion head coach in bring Brian Shock from Cliff High School. Next, I think we have the NMP Nation agreement that the athletes are there and they have widely underachieved. Three more reasons we like them - Bishop Woodruff, Dee Smith and Rakim Stokes - will be in the running for several 5A awards and recognition when we return in the fall. Still need another reason? They now play in a district 3-5A with Chaparral, Deming and Santa Teresa. Only Santa Teresa has had real success in the past 5-years.
Projected Seed: 5-seed.
Crystal Ball: Beat 12-seed and upset 4-seed.

Goddard Rockets (2015/2016 Record: 16-12) - Okay, outside of Los Lunas many of you are ready to hit the reply button, you know who you are (insert your username here). So why are we high on the Rockets? Roswell lost Daniel Amador, Rockets return a 1-2 punch in LeAnthoney Harrison and Dalin Stanford along with the third Top 100 player in Cal Villareal. This team will be a 20-win team and make a deep run.
Projected Seed: 3-seed.
Crystal Ball: Handle 14-seed and overcome a tough 6-seed.

Who We Could Have Picked

Capital Jaguars - Jeremy Anaya's time to shine.
Espanola Valley Sundevils - Does the dust settle in the Valley for the defending champs?
Grants Pirates - Matt Vail is the face of the program now.
Roswell Coyotes - Don't be shocked if they win it all - Garrett Smothermon and Chris Mesquita are solid.

The Team That Could Be The Surprise Jump To Stardom

Belen Eagles - I think their time is coming, I wouldn't be shocked.
St. Pius X Sartans - Head coach Segura is always a threat.
Kirtland Central Broncos - Welcome to 5A (again). Dowdy could be the name to reckon with.
