Feature: Comparing Resumes For No. 1
Joshua J Grine of NMPreps.com

We have a few weeks left to have the great debate on who gets the 1-seed in the state tournament. Why does it matter and right now who has the nod.

Compare

We looked at the top ranked teams on both the NMPreps.com Top-25 Rankings along with the freeman rankings, record, district position and head to head (if available) to best argue the top seeds to this point in the season.

6A BASKETBALL

Rankings Combined
1. Onate
2. Cibola
3. Cleveland
4. Albuquerque High

Records
1. Onate (21-3)
2. Cibola (18-3)
3. Cleveland (17-6)
4. Albuquerque (14-7)

District Position
1. Onate: Will be a District Champion with ease, could go in perfect.
2. Albuquerque High: At the moment 5-0 and could also go in perfect.
3. Cibola: Half game ahead of Cleveland, both from 1-6A. Loss to Volcano, last place team somewhat hurts.
4. Cleveland: Losses to Cibola and Rio Rancho.

Head-to-Head
1. Cibola (2-1) :Beat Albuquerque (68-62), Loss to Cleveland (66-54 OT), Beat Cleveland (74-71 2OT)
2. Cleveland (2-1): Beat Onate (65-59 OT), Beat Cibola (66-54 OT), Loss to Cibola (74-71 2OT)
3. Onate (1-1): Loss to Cleveland (65-59 OT), Beat Albuquerque (59-46).
4. Albuquerque (0-2): Loss to Onate (59-46), Loss to Cibola (68-62)

Wins over Potential DC's (In 1st Place Right Now)
Onate (3): Albuquerque, Hope Christian, Los Lunas (tied)
Cibola (3): Sandia, Albuquerque, Hope Christian
Cleveland (3):Onate, Grants, Cibola
Albuquerque (0)

Work To Do but Potential
Carlsbad: Ranked 4th/5th - Loss to Hobbs hurt, needs them to fall and also beat them on the road. They could also tie with Hobbs for #1 in district play and NMAA could select them above Hobbs.

5A BASKETBALL

Rankings Combined
1 (tie). Grants (1 NMP/2 FM)
1 (tie). Roswell (2 NMP/1 FM)
3. Capital (4 NMP/3 FM)
4. Centennial (3 NMP/6FM)
5. Farmington (6 NMP/4 FM)

Centennial over Farmington on rankings as the highest ranking between the two is higher.

Records
1. Roswell (18-2)
2. Capital (21-3)
3. Farmington (20-3)
4. Grants (19-3)
5. Centennial (17-5)

District Position
1. Grants: Similar district story but Grants has Pius as the kicker (if that was available for district strength)
2. Roswell: Similar as Grants but Grants has Pius right now as strength. Both will go undefeated.
3. Farmington: 6-0 but a weaker district. They need to stay perfect.
4. Centennial: Loss to Los Lunas (or tied with them) right now and could play into the picture. NMAA has choice if they finished tied.
5. Capital: The Bernalilllo loss hurts but will still be a DC.

Head-To-Head
1. Grants (2-0): Beat Farmington, Capital.
2. Roswell (1-1): Beat Centennial. Lost to Centennial.
2. Centennial (1-1): Beat Roswell. Lost to Centennial.
4. Capital (0-1): Lost to Grants.
5. Farmington (0-1): Lost to Grants

Wins over Potential DC's (In 1st Place Right Now)
Grants (4): Farmington, Capital, Pojoaque Valley, Cliff
Roswell (3): Portales, Centennial, Hobbs
Centennial (2): Roswell, Albuquerque
Capital (1): Los Lunas (technically tied with Centennial)
Farmington (0)

Work To Do But Potential
Los Lunas, Gallup, St. Pius X - These three are technically still capable of tying for the DC and have good resume to argue if they do.

Why Being Number One Matters

Last two seasons the 1-seed in the two biggest divisions have won the title. Hobbs and Centennial were 1-seeds and won in 2015. Valley and Roswell were 1-seeds in 2014 and won it all.

Yet Another Texas HS Champ. Rebroadcast

This is just insane. Here it is getting close to March and time for basketball championships and Texas is still doing endless rebroadcasts of all of the Texas football championships. It is Katy 17 and Lake Travis 7 at start of the 3rd quarter if you are interested. LMBO New Mexico can't even get one championship game televised and Texas rebroadcasts every championship game over and over and over and over and over...... Katy Tigers have a first down right now on 38 of Lake Travis the rebroadcast. Time Out. hahahahaha

Who We Would Take To Win A First Round Game
Volcano
Vista: The Hawks are talented. We could end there but this team is playing well lately beating a top ranked Cibola team and just playing well at the right time. David Cormier (Jr./Forward) is one of the best players in the state and that alone is scary for any team that draws them.

Making Some Sense: Piedra Vista plays Miaymura this week and NEEEED to win. If they do they could be as high as being in the locks arguing for higher than a 13 seed but will be in conversation with Del Norte and Artesia for the 13th spot. If Miyamura wins, Los Alamos could steal the 16th spot (start praying Hilltoppers).

Who We Would Take As An Upset
Artesia
: With Piedra Vista on the out right now why not take the bubble team that did the upsetting last season as the 13-seed. The Bulldogs have a talented roster led by Justin Houghtaling (Sr./F) who can pass well, penetrate and score.

Henderson: 3A/2A/1A Preview

Eunice and Lordsburg big favorites entering season
By: Kyle Henderson | nmpreps@yahoo.com

1787534.jpg

The Eunice Cardinals won the 3A State Title Game defeating Lordsburg 8-4 last season

You have to start with the 2015 State Champs the Eunice Cardinals. An elite baseball factory for ages that went 17-9 in 2015 under Drew Reynolds winning the 3A Title beating Lordsburg 8-4 in the finals. Though they graduate Ivan Zamora, Armando Rodriguez, and Jose Luis Rodriguez, they return a great some quality 2016 prospects. Bryce Jenkins and Blane Ferbranche are notable returners. Ferbranche hit for .312 last year, Jenkins was 2-3 on the mound in 11 appearances. They do lose Bryce Foutz who was 6-1 last year as a Freshman as he moved out of the state, big loss losing a pitcher that likely would of been tops in all of 3A this year.

Lordsburg has a ton of talent returning after going 16-4 last year and 8-1 in district play. They return Junior Johnny Plowman who hit for .508 last year and 29 RBI’s and also return Ramon Retana who hit for .345 and 16 RBI’s. Returning as their ace on the mound is Jacob Esquivel who was 7-1 on the bump last year with 42K’s. Frank De L O and Alejandro Estrada are additional names to know who each contributed last year.

So Who Is Next In Line?

Texico Baseball under Head Coach Ty Thatcher went 16-10 last year before losing to Lordsburg 13-0 in the quarterfinals. The Wolverines were young last year and have grown up quite a bit year over year. Watch for Rafael Maldonado RHP, Tanner Dickerman IF, Matt Odegaard OF, Brock Thompson C, Dalton Thatcher RHP, Cole Rohrbach RHP, and they also return 6-foot-4, 215 pound sophomore Nate Phipps who turned heads at last year’s state tournament.

Estancia went 14-10 last year and returns some quality bats into 2016. Mosies Anaya is a sophomore who hit for .448 at the plate as a freshmen, Senior Adam Lujan should be the main man on the mound and a key infielder. Trevor Noblitt and Gabe Garcia should help provide senior leadership.

The Raton Tigers went 17-12 last year but graduate 8 from their roster. Watch for Dakota Martinez, Brandon Luksich, Jonathan Cabriales, and Dillon Lemons this season to keep the Tigers competitive. The Pecos Panthers won 17 games last year and return 13 lettermen into the 2016 season. Will be interesting to see if Pecos can continue to duplicate year’s past success. The Dexter Demons return a good amount of talent including Standout Senior Dominic Lomeli. Last year Dexter was 14-12.

Week 14: Wednesday Fringe Teams

Week 14: Wednesday Fringe Teams

District 1-6A

Locks: Cleveland, Cibola, Rio Rancho, Volcano Vista.

Santa Fe (9-15, 2-5): The Demons took huge leaps this season with a pair of District 1-6A wins in arguably one of the toughest Districts in the entire state. It's difficult to have them on the fringe still with them playing in the best district in the state however, they have some losses that keep them on the maybe. What they need: Upset Cibola in their finale or win a district tournament game.

District 2-6A

Locks: Sandia

La Cueva (9-13, 4-2): The Bears are in good position to make the state tournament as a district runner-up. However, their overall resume has some question marks along with some positives. Wins over Valley, Volcano Vista and Mayfield help the argument in this situation.

Highland (7-15, 2-5): Let's tear the band-aide off quick, the Hornets need to beat Manzano tonight and then Volcano Vista on Friday along with a strong finish in the District tournament. Also, they have to hope for Eldorado to drop

Eldorado (6-16, 2-4):
It's either Highland or Eldorado, if either, that will go dancing. The Eagles have games against La Cueva tonight and Manzano on Friday. Finishing above Highland and they have an argument.

District 3-6A

Locks: Onate, Gadsden

Las Cruces (14-12, 4-4):
The magic number is 5 if Gadsden and Las Cruces and Gadsden tie for District Runner Up. Likely, both are in the State Tournament in that case. 5 is the magic number, if they go to the +10, -10 for second place, Deming would need to beat Gadsden by 5 for Las Cruces to be second place seed in the district tournament.

Mayfield (10-15, 3-4): They came back to win last night against Deming, that was needed. Now they have to do the unthinkable and upset the No. 1 ranked team in the state of New Mexico - Onate. If they don't then they will need to make a serious run in the tournament.

District 4-6A

Locks: Hobbs, Carlsbad

None: Alamogordo and Clovis would have to make headlines winning the district tournament.

District 5-6A

Locks: Valley, Rio Grande, Albuquerque, Atrisco Heritage Academy

None: West Mesa also needs to make bigger headlines winning the district tournament.

College Junior Days

I wanted to get your take on college "Junior Days". The pitch is they are "an opportunity to meet with the coaches, see a scrimmage, view campus, and see our facilities. This is your opportunity to evaluate our school and program."
How important are these in the recruiting process? I've heard everything from they make verbal offers at these events to they're cattle calls. Anyone have some solid intel? Has anyone been to one?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Today, we highlight the Top-8 games to watch Tuesday and Wednesday night. This is the final week of the regular season.

MARQUEE GAMES

No. 6 Cleveland (18-6, 4-2) at No. 4 Cibola (19-3, 5-1), Tues., 7p: This will be the third meeting between the two squad, both needing extra time to finish. Its a game that could be headlined backcourt vs athletes. The Storm bring their athletes, three d-1 football players, vs one of the best backcourts in the state behind Desmond Carpenter and Cameron Dixon. Expect big plays, scoring as the district is on the line - Cibola wins, they win the district.

Prediction: Cleveland 63, Cibola 62

No. 20 Robertson (21-3, 3-1) at No. 24 West Las Vegas (18-5, 3-1), Wed., 7p: In 4A, the 2nd ranked and 3rd ranked teams in the classification square off with two of the better backcourts in the classification. Junior DJ Bustos will take on Robertson guard Sebastian Gonzales for the District lead in the final week of the district season.

Prediction: Robertson 71, West Las Vegas 62

(No. 21 Gallup (19-5, 5-1) at No. 19 Farmington (20-4, 6-0), Tues., 7p: The Bengals have basically owned the district and have been playing well since the January 29th loss to the Scorpions, their only loss of 2016. The Scorpions are having one of their best seasons' but coming off a loss to Sandia on Saturday. Both teams are evenly match, scoring around 63 points per game.

Prediction: Gallup 60, Farmington 54

Lordsburg (22-1) at Tularosa (15-9), Tues., 6:30p: Jacob Esquivel of Lordsburg (4-0) is quickly growing is name for the 3A player of the year along with Small School Division player of the year will battle with a district leader in Tularosa who is (3-1). The winner takes the title and if the Mavericks claims the win they likely become the 1-seed in March.

Prediction: Lordsburg 63, Lordsburg 50

TOURNAMENT HEADLINES

Top-4 Seed On The Line
No. 15 Espanola Valley (17-7, 4-2) at No. 11 Capital (22-3, 6-1), Wed., 7p:
Another contest mid-week that will (basically) crown a regular season district title. The Espanola Valley Sundevils lost the first match at home but home to upset the Jaguars. However, the Jaguars have only been playing better on an already impressive season.

Prediction: Capital 58, Espanola 51

On the Fringe
Eldorado (6-16, 2-4) at La Cueva (9-13, 4-2), Wed., 7p:
One of the rivalries that would sell out the gym has lost some flare but has some meaning this week. The Eldorado Eagles looking to play spoiler alert to the Bears playoff hopes. La Cueva is on the bubble and with a loss here they could be missing out on the tournament.

Prediction: Eldorado 54, La Cueva 53

Arguing for Eight
No. 14 Gadsden (16-8, 4-2) at Las Cruces (13-12, 3-4), Tues., 7p:
The Gadsden Panthers from District 3-6A are arguing for a Top-8 seed in the state tournament next month. A win here could move them closer to securing the slot. Las Cruces on the bubble still looking to make a case for a 12-16 seed. Gadsden led by senior shooting guard Tomas Cano and off-guard Joshua Bailey battle the duo in Markus Collins (So) and Mike Uribe.

Prediction: Las Cruces 55, Gadsden 49

Better Bubble
Santa Fe (9-14, 2-4) at Volcano Vista (9-13, 2-5), Tues., 7p:
Somewhat odd but both 9-win teams are 'locks' for the state tournament. I don't see how the NMAA selection committee would leave both off at this point. However, better safe than sorry as neither team could afford to lose this contest. Both have some talent on the roster. The size factor is in favor of the Hawks who have bigger guards and inside presence but the Demons 5'8 guard Santi Gonzales plays a big role at 14 points per contest.

Prediction: Volcano Vista 53, Santa Fe 50
