Coach of the Week: Jim Miller, Las Cruces
Jim Miller’s Las Cruces Bulldawgs came through once again in a big time match up hosting Volcano Vista this past weekend outlasting the Hawks 24-21. The Game featured two top 5 6A teams and Coach Miller and Co. proved that the Dawgs despite being young this year can hold their own, in what was the biggest statement win of week 3. Las Cruces takes on Rio Rancho in week 4 in yet another big time Class 6A match up.

Team of the Week: Hatch Valley Bears
The Hatch Valley Bears are the No. 1 ranked team by NMPreps.com in Class 4A and defeated the No. 2 team in Class 3A last Friday Night 63-29. The Bears have outscored the comp this year 152-43 and have been led this year by Adrian Grajeda who has rushed for 383-yards and scored 7 touchdowns. This weekend the Bears take on Clint, TX.

Southwest Player of the Week - Joeray Valencia - Mayfield (Overall Award Winner)
For a third week in a row the Mayfield Trojans have had a player from the Southwest win the Player of the Week Award. During a 41-6 win over Carlsbad, Joeray Valencia threw for 330-yards and 4 touchdown passes, Gavin Swinson a junior receiver caught 3 out of the 4 touchdowns.

Metro Player of the Week - Gabe Ortega - Cleveland
Senior Quarterback Gabe Ortega shined once again in Cleveland’s big 52-0 victory over Onate Friday Night. The Senior Quarterback was 15-22 passing for 249-yards and accounted for 4 touchdowns as the No. 1 ranked Storm moved to 3-0. On the season he is 40-56 passing which is a passing percentage of 70%.

Southeast Player of the Week - Lukas Gutierrez - Goddard
The Goddard Rockets got their first win of the 2015 season defeating Los Lunas 35-7 Friday Night at the Wool Bowl. On the evening it was Senior Running Back Lukas Gutierrez that propelled the Rockets rushing for 190-yards and 3 touchdowns. Goddard takes on 0-3 Belen in week 4.

North Player of the Week - Brandon Hernandez - Grants
Senior Three-Year Starting Quarterback Brandon Hernandez and Grants Pirates are off to a nice 3-0 start this season after beating Hope Christian in week 3 33-14. Hernandez threw for 240-yards and 5 touchdowns against the Huskies. The Pirates play in a marquee 5A match up taking on a top 20 team in the Miyamura Patriots.

TOP 25 RECAPS - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH

No. 1 Cleveland Storm (3-0) 52, No. 13 Onate (0-3) 00: The University of New Mexico recruit Gabe Ortega started the night off with a pass to one of the best wide receivers in New Mexico in Marcus Williams with a 15-yard touchdown pass. It was all Cleveland, improving to 3-0, from that opening drive on their way to a 52-0 shutout of the visiting Onate Knights who fall to 0-3.

No. 2 Mayfield Trojans (3-0) 41, Carlsbad Cavemen (0-3) 6: In an emotional night when brothers squared off for the first time, it was the powerful Mayfield Trojans moving easily along on Friday night. The highlight of the night came from Gavin Swinson who trotted down the field for a 97-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter for the Trojans.

No. 3 Centennial Hawks (3-0) 44, Del Norte Knights (1-2) 6: he top team in 5A football walked to the tune of another big win, this time over Del Norte High School from Albuquerque. Pena from Centennial with the stat line for the night with 127-yards, 2 touchdowns and also ran one in for the Hawks. The Hawks move to 3-0 and will look to solidify themselves as the favorite in 5A along with Artesia.

No. 6 Artesia Bulldogs (3-0) 42, Valencia Jaguars (1-2) 6: The No. 6 team in New Mexico started the night off with a monster 90-yard kick-off return by Ethan Duff and never looked back. One of the states top quarterbacks did what he did best on Friday night throwing for 5-touchdowns on the night. The Bulldogs looking more like favorites to repeat as champions.


No. 8 Rio Rancho Rams (2-1) 28, No. 14 La Cueva Bears(1-2) 3: The defending champs recover after a week two loss, holding the No. 14 Bears to just three points on Friday night. Rio Rancho's Josh Foley started the night for the Rams with a 13-yard touchdown run for the Rams. On their way to a 2-1 start the Rams never looked back after the opening touchdown by Foley.


No. 9 Clovis Wildcats (3-0) 61, Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars (0-3) 6: This one was all the Wildcats at Leon Williams stadium. Up 48-6 at the half the Clovis Wildcats proved doubters wrong with an explosive offensive showing during week three on their way to a 3-0 start.


No. 10 Alamogordo Tigers (3-0) 59, Highland (1-2) 6: The Highland Hornets started the night with a 6-0 led off a Seth Platt fumble recovery. After that it was all runningback Hunter Graham and the Alamogordo Tigers on their way to a 3-0 start and 59-6 win. Graham finished the evening with 217 total yards (200 rushing) and four touchdowns. No. 11 Hobbs (1-2) 42, Roswell (1-2) 14: Finding their first win of the season the Hobbs Eagles come out with a 42-14 win in front of a huge crowd. The Roswell Coyotes fall to 1-2 on the season dropping the second game in as many weeks.

No. 12 Sandia Matadors (2-1) 51, Albuquerque Bulldogs (0-3) 7: The Sandia Matadors were led by Jimmy Gallegos at running back who had three rushing touchdowns for the Matadors. This one was all Matadors from the get-go as they take out the unranked Albuquerque High Bulldogs.

No. 1 Cleveland defeated Onate 52-0.
Cleveland has played two New Mexico Teams this season. The combined scored is 104-0. Friday Night Cleveland ran through Onate. Friday Night the Storm got on the board when Quarterback Gabe Ortega threw a 15-yard touchdown to Marcus Williams, then another Ortega touchdown pass this time to Adam Cook made it 16-0. At the half the Storm lead 39-0, then would eventually mercy rule the Knights 52-0 in the 4th quarter. Ortega threw for 249-yards and 4 touchdowns.

No. 2 Mayfield defeated Carlsbad 41-6
Michael Bradley didn’t hold back against his younger brother Gary Bradley Friday Night as the Trojans led 34-0 at the half. The Trojans now 3-0 on the season were led by Joeray Valencia who threw for 330-yards and 3 touchdowns, all three touchdowns were caught by Gavin Swinson who caught for 174-yards. The Trojans are on the road next weekend against Alamogordo.

No. 3 Centennial defeated Del Norte 44-6
The Hawks rolled past Del Norte Friday Night to move to 3-0 on the season. Quarterback Dante Lopez threw for 161-yards and accounted for 4 touchdowns. JR Pena caught for 120-yards including three scores.

No. 4. Las Cruces 24, Volcano Vista 21
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs moved to 2-1 on the season defeating the Volcano Vista Hawks Saturday in Las Cruces. Quarterback Kameron Miller threw for 234-yards and scored 2 touchdowns, Josh Williams threw for 235-yards and two scores.

No. 5 Volcano Vista vs. Las Cruces
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs moved to 2-1 on the season defeating the Volcano Vista Hawks Saturday in Las Cruces. Quarterback Kameron Miller threw for 234-yards and scored 2 touchdowns, Josh Williams threw for 235-yards and two scores.

No. 6 Artesia defeated Valencia 42-6
The Artesia Bulldogs shined on homecoming night blasting Valencia 42-6. Senior Quarterback Justin Houghtaling who accounted for 5 touchdowns last week, again hit the 5 touchdown mark, all scores come from passing.

No. 7 Eldorado defeated West Mesa 49-8
The Eldorado Eagles moved to 3-0 on the season defeating West Mesa Thursday Night 49-8. Through three games, the Eagles have outscored the competition by a combined 156-8. The Eagles got on the board in the first thanks to a Dominic Sandoval 35-yard touchdown, then a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jayce Jackson to Isaiah Martinez. The Eagles led 35-0 after a Dominic Sandoval touchdown, then made it 49-0 in the 4th quarter when Noah Sweitzer returned a blocked field goal 80-yards for a score. The Eagles will take on Volcano Vista, Mayfield, and Cleveland in weeks 4, 5, and 6.

No. 8 Rio Rancho defeated La Cueva 23-3
The Rio Rancho Rams moved to 2-1 on the season defeated La Cueva by 20 points Friday Night. Junior Running Back Josh Foley ran for over 100-yards and scored two touchdowns.

No. 9 Clovis defeat Atrisco Heritage 61-8
Friday Night the Wildcats moved to 3-0 in style defeating Atrisco Heritage 61-8. Racking up more than 465-yards, the Wildcats never looked back and were led by Junior Running Back Micah Gray who hit 231-yards and 4 touchdowns. Next up for Rio Rancho: Rio Rancho, Cleveland, and Frenship TX.

No. 10 Alamogordo defeated Highland 59-6
The Alamogordo Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season defeating Highland 59-6 Friday Night in Albuquerque. Hunter Graham a senior running back for the Tiger rushed for 200-yards and scored 3 touchdowns.

No. 16 Manzano defeated Rio Grande 55-14
Thursday Night the Manzano Monarchs won their first game of the season defeating Rio Grande by 41 points, winning 55-14. The Monarchs are now 1-2 on the season, Rio Grande moves to 3. On the night Jordan Byrd and Orlando Perez each scored 2 touchdowns.

No. 17 St. Pius X defeated Gallup 30-3
The St. Pius Sartans actually trailed this game 3-0 at the half, but rallied back in the 2nd half to move to 3-0. Junior Quarterback Drew Ortiz who account for 6 touchdowns in week 2 against Los Alamos threw three touchdowns on the evening.

No. 18 Valley lost to Cibola 15-14
The Cougars trailed 14-9 in the 3rd quarter, but were able to edge out Valley 15-14 in a dramatic Friday Night Week 3 Match Up. Christian Winters caught a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to make it a final.

No. 19 Piedra Vista vs. Durango, CO
The Panthers who were coming off a 34-16 win over Goddard lost their first game of the year to rival Durnago 21-3 Friday Night.

No. 20 Goddard defeated Los Lunas 35-7
Thanks to 100-yards rushing from Lukas Gutierrez the Rockets earned their first victory of the year at the Wool Bowl. Sophomore Quarterback Cameron Stevenson threw for 2 touchdowns.

No. 21 Deming defeated Silver 32-14
The Wildcats moved to 2-1 on the season thanks to another big performance from quarterback Dante Urrea. Last week the senior quarterback scored 6 touchdowns, against Silver he scored 4 all on the ground.

No. 22 Carlsbad lost to Mayfield 41-6

The Scorpions are now 3-0 under first year head coach Jeff Dalton. Friday Night Quarterback Kyle Bencenti joined the 5 touchdown club, hitting 3 different receivers for passing touchdown.

No. 25 Hatch defeating 63-29
The Hatch Bears moved to 3-0 on the season defeating rival Lordsburg Friday Night 63-29. The Bears were led by Adrian Grajeda who ran for 101-yards and 4 touchdowns, Manny Rodriguez recored 2 interceptions, and Jeremiah Padilla returned a kick 89-yards for a touchdown. Now 3-0 the Beras will take on Clint, TX in week 4.

Hannah Kelley/ Farmington/ Class of 2016 Hannah Kelley has continuously been a leader for the Farmington Scorpions in years past and continues to do so in her senior season. So far this season, Kelley has knocked in about 15 goals and assisted a teammate 5 times. She led her team to an Academy Invite Championship, resulting in an undefeated season so far.


Week 4 Male Player of the Week

Skylor Rose/ Sandia Prep/ Class of 2019 Joining a team that has statistically been good is no easy task. Especially when you come in as a freshman and are expected to make a big impact. However, this has been no problem for freshman Skylor Rose. In just 6 games, Rose has scored 11 times, including 4 goals in the Sundevils’ first district game. Rose will be a player of impact for Prep the rest of the season.

Week Four brings changes to the NMPreps.com's top-25 Rankings. La Cueva is hot right now and move up in the rankings. Today, we take a look at the state and hit some headlines for week four. Also, release today was the week five rankings.

WEEK FOUR: TEAMS ON THE RISE

Team of the Week: No. 1 La Cueva Lady Bears (6-0) - For the second week in a row the La Cueva Bears are our team of the week with an impressive showing winning the APS Metro Championships. They took out two top-5 teams along the way. Annabelle Kunbinski and Celeste Carmingnani were terrific this weekend for the Bears. Know the names as Kubinski is only a sophomore in a classification loaded with talent.

2. No. 4 St. Pius X (3-1): With a championship of their own, Piedra Vista Tournament, the Sartans slide up to the 4th spot on the NMPreps.com rankings. the Sartans have a couple solid players that we have heard about but at the time we don't have any nominations or stats.

3. No. 9 Sandia Prep (5-0): The Lady Sundevils have quietly moved up the rankings in a heart beat. With a 5-0 start it was only right to highlight the 4A team as they are now a favorite in the state. Sophomores Camryn Nelson and Catherine Kelly are part of the talented sophomore class and two names that could be favorites for the Miss Volleyball Award.

4. No. 21 Santa Teresa (7-1): They were ranked week three, unranked week four and now back in the rankings week five. This team has been hot lately and moving up the rankings and could be here to stay.

5. Melrose (7-1): The Buffaloes are 7-1 on the season and a team to keep an eye on in 2A volleyball. They have some talent on the team and are part of four/five teams that could win it all this season.

Grine on the Rankings: Last week I said it was the top-4 teams and the rest of the state. After this week I believe we lost a team in Sandia who had an upset loss. However, it was to a good team, ranked, but suffering two losses in one week moved them down. When you look at the rankings plenty of week three and week four was taken into account as scores have been entered in late.
